Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Occidental Loop
Start Location: Valley Ford, School Rd.
Pre-registration
PLEASE PREREGISTER
Park uphill from the School, which is no longer 'abandoned'.
This Wednesday we will ride from Valley Ford through Occidental to Duncan Mills (actually according to the self-professed official website at https://duncansmillsvillage.com/ it's Duncans Mills but the website is a little dodgy on CAPITALIZATION so how do we know for sure) for lunch with a return along the beautiful Sonoma Coast. This is the classic June Birthday ride, but it is too good a route for only once a year. Since we are past Labor Day we hope for easier traffic on Hwy 1. The shortest route is about 40 miles ~2300 ft of climbing (includes riding to lunch on Moscow Road). Riding Austin Creek on the way to lunch adds ~7 miles and ~250 ft climbing. After lunch, there is a popular out and back on Hwy 1 past Jenner to overlook the mouth of the Russian River where we see lounging marine mammals and birds (adds ~4 miles and ~200 ft climbing). Some of us really like to return over Bay Hill; this adds ~200 ft of climbing, some of it steep, and trades ~4 miles on a beautiful quiet back road for ~5 miles on Hwy 1 through Bodega.
These two ridwithgps routes illustrate all the options:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48199495 includes Moscow Road plus Jenner: 44 mi with ~2500 ft climbing. (Skip Jenner for a 40 mile ride with ~2300 ft climbing)
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29637914 includes Austin Creek Redwoods and Bay Hill ~47 mi with ~3,000 ft climbing (add Jenner to extend).
Lunch: Since it is my birthday ride (The real day is 9/5, but my family celebrated my birthday on 9/2 for about a decade—a little deception to get me into kindergarten when I was 5—so 9/3 is a good compromise), I plan to celebrate by supplementing your lunches with a couple of large pizzas to share and an assortment of sweets.
Weather forecast according to NOAA: Valley Ford Hi of 73 (10°F cooler in the morning); Monte Rio Hi of 80, but probably mid-70s when we go through; BE PREPARED FOR fog and lower temps along the coast. Many of you were cold on the coastal leg in June.

Meet at 5:25 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: El Cerrito Plaza BART
Pre-registration
[Route] This week we'll be hitting up the less ridden trails on the wildcat canyon side of the park. Expect some short but very steep sections that might have some hike a bike. We'll actually be riding through Alvarado park this time which is new to me, but the parks maps say bikes are permitted. Ride ends at Headlands brewing. Bring lights as the days are getting shorter. Looks like it will be cooling down this week so bring layers in case it gets cold.
Leader: Mark Nienberg (510) 812-9312 text
Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Miller Creek to Tomales (long version)
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Pre-registration
From Marinwood to Tomales via Nicasio and Chileno Valley, return via Hwy 1. This longer version of the ride comes into Tomales from the back side using Alexander, Fallon Two Rock, and Middle Roads.
There are some shorter options. You can start your ride in Nicasio to save 20 miles for the day. We should pass through there around 10:15. Also, you can skip the turn onto Alexander and ride straight into Tomales for the lunch stop. That saves about 4 miles. Please review the map ahead of time and be prepared to navigate this change on your own if you think you might want to do it.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time, you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at our regroup in Nicasio.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Start Location: Half Moon Bay - Fire Station
Pre-registration
Saturday T-pace ride from Half Moon Bay to Pescadero. Meet across from Fire Station at 9 for 9:15. Start riding down Hwy 1 stopping at Pigeon Pt Lighthouse mile 20, lunch mile 39, most like the artichoke bread at the market, The Bike Hut mile 49. A few areas to shorten miles and climbing, mile 48.5, 56.8, and 58.2 left on Verde Rd, all allow you to take Hwy 1 back, just look at route. Regroups are not necessary since some riders may be faster and ride together, others have other things to do later. It will be an easy pace for me so usually I'm behind all riders and will regroup with those who wish to; I have a ride on Sunday also. Gaza Creek out and back is worth it. It’s been cleaned up.

GPC Route: China Camp & Paradise Loops
Start Location: McNears Beach
Pre-registration
Riders coming to McNears from the East Bay, remember that the Bike Path is closed for repair/retrofit and will not be available for your commute.
This 45-mile route from June, 2024 combines two popular loops close to home. Begin at McNear’s Beach in San Rafael where there are bathrooms and free parking. From here, we will begin a counterclockwise loop around China Camp State Park, cut through the city of San Rafael, and make our way towards Paradise Drive. Lunch will be at mile 27 in Tiburon’s shoreline-with-a-view next to the Angel Island Ferry Terminal and Café Acri. After lunch (* see advisory below), we will complete the Paradise loop and head back to McNear’s Beach via Point San Pedro road.
We are advised (thanks Debbit Miskell): FYI-There is construction on Paradise for first half mile out of Tiburon. They did have a detour marked via Mar west and Centro west and east. The road is a mess and take the detour if marked it is a much nicer way to go.

Let's head out to the coast to avoid the inland heat. Meet at Bear Valley Visitor Center at 10 for a 10:15 start. We will ride out via Bear Valley Road and Sir Francis Drake with optional return through Pt Reyes Station. Bring lunch or buy at the deli in Inverness Park. Some riders may wish to push on another 3 miles to the lighthouse or stop at North Beach on the way back. You can also head straight for the lighthouse and eat there or at Drake's Beach on the way back. Temperatures should be in the 70's.

This Weeks Route. Days are getting shorter so expect to be riding trails in the dark. Lights are a must and a headlamp is strongly recommend. This one does have us going up Tower to Volmer peak trail so expect challenging climbs (with some potential hike-a-bike) and tricky descents. If you want to skip either of those and ride the rest that should be fine. Ride ends at headlands brewing.

GPC Route: Heather Farm, Morgan Territory, Diablo Junction
Start Location: Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
Meet in the penultimate northern parking lot of Heather Farm in Walnut Creek (by the baseball fields) for this ride to Clayton, Morgan Territory, and Diablo Junction. Lunch will be at Draeger's Market in Blackhawk Plaza.
Note that Heather Farm is about a mile from Pleasant Hill BART, which is probably the preferred way to get there. If you want to make the ride easier you can skip the Diablo climb after lunch and work your way back on the Iron Horse Trail or using this nicer route. Navigation for those options is up to you.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at the park in Clayton, where we will have a brief stop.

Join us for a chill T-pace version of the traditional Thursday evening road ride! We'll go up Spruce to Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then turn right to head down Shepherd's Canyon and ride back through Montclair and via the Lake Temescal bike path. For those unfamiliar with the route, the first 7 miles are climbing and then the rest of the ride is mostly flat or downhill. Lights and a light jacket/windbreaker are strongly recommended, especially since the ride finishes around sunset.
The route does include a steep (13%) 2-block stretch (Roanoke Rd.) toward the end, but riders can avoid it if needed.
We will have multiple regroups and will stick to a T pace (10-12 mph). This ride is a no-drop ride and we welcome folks new to the club!

Start Location: El Cerrito Plaza BART
Mandatory pre-registration with max 6 riders
Just in case this ride fills up and you'd still like to join, two options were bought to my attention:
- Tom Ayres says: there is the option of taking a 25 bus from treasure Island to the salesforce transit center in San Francisco. The bus conveniently or coincidentally leaves every 25 minutes on Saturday Saturday. I have done that before on a ride when there were too many of us for the ferry.
- If one wanted to, one could also meet us at the Ferry building about 9:40am. Embarcadero BART is just three short blocks away!
Join me for a Bay Area Classic! Strava Route.
Meetup 8:20am at El Cerrito Plaza BART for a 8:25am rollout. No stopping until we hit the Treasure Island Ferry (goal of getting there before the first ferry departs at 9:30am).
From the Ferry Terminal, we'll ride along the bay through the Marina and then head over the Golden Gate to Marin, where we'll take the classic Paradise loop through Tiburon. We'll continue north and then cut east back home over the Richmond-San Rafael bridge for burgers + beer @ The Backyard. Expect big views, great weather, and (hopefully) not a lot of stops.
Notes:
- This is a limited-capacity ride due to restrictions on the TI Ferry (6 bikes at a time).
- Ferry tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance here.
- I'm not a roadie, and I'll be on a gravel bike, but expect a 12-15mph pace.
- Please bring tools + spares to fix a flat, snacks, two water bottles, and a light layer.
- Most of the route is on protected bike paths, but we'll be on shared roads some of the time and non-blinking lights are encouraged.
- The Backyard has veggie + vegan options available.

Hey all I posted this on the BBC Project_Diablo Page but wanted to share with the GPC community as well: I've been doing some solo training but I'm missing the great Mount Diablo Challenge group rides we did ahead of the event last year. I'd like to get a good group going on Saturday September 20th. We'll start at Domingo Peet's 9am and go EASY to Oak Hill Park at the foot of the mountain. Anyone who wants to intercept at the park we'll be there at 11am. We roll to the event's start line from there and it's pick your own pace to the top, where we'll regroup and ride back the way we came: South Gate, St. Mary's etc back to the East Bay. Route is around 80 miles door to door and we get it done in about 7 hours with some BART bail out options on the way back. This is 2 weeks out from the event so it's a good chance to get the mountain in the legs one last time ahead of the event. This is also a great social opportunity where you can talk about your pacing goals and maybe find some friends that you can work with on race day. Please note this is not a typical GPC ride: It is a DROP ride. Pace out and back will be very easy but all riders will be expected to be fully self-sufficient in terms of food, tools, route, etc. Know your limits, equipment and bailout options please. Approximate route is below please note the posted route does not start at Domingo Peet's which is our official starting point (see above). Hope to see you there! https://www.strava.com/routes/3403445368278211976

Saturday T-pace ride from Half Moon Bay to Pescadero. Meet across from Fire Station, 1191 Main St, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019, at 9 for 9:15 start. Individual Time Trial
Come test your fitness level and get in a great workout by riding the Bears Loop as a time trial. In the ITT, each person rides at his/her own pace (no drafting) to see how fast the Bears Loop can be completed. It’s a great format for pushing yourself to see how fast you can ride the loop.
Pace Group Ride
Ride the Bears Loop at your normal pace to use it to determine your GPC pace (https://www.grizz.org/rides/ratings.php). Or use this ride to practice your pace for an upcoming event.
The first rider is off at 10:01 and a rider a minute after that. For the GPC Pace ride, a pace group can start together, or each rider can rider on their own as the ITT riders do. (Regardless of the format, each rider is timed individually.)
Rider finishing times are usually shared in the ride report email to the club. While it is nice to see what times folks ride, reporting of rider times is optional. Also, the ITT is open to both members and non-members; no need to join as in the past.

GPC Route:
Occidental Loop
Start Location:
Valley Ford, School Rd.

GPC Route:
Miller Creek to Tomales (long version)
Start Location:
San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center

Start Location:
McNears Beach

Ride is cancelled this week. Please join us next week for the final ride of the season, plus post-ride dinner!
*Note that leaders rotate weekly, and we will try to always have two leaders at each ride.

El Cerrito Plaza BART

Domingo Peet's
Pre-registration

Bears Loop
Start Location:
Orinda - San Pablo Dam Rd and Bear Creek Rd

Friday is Native American Day, a state holiday in California. No lunch stop planned, but the group can decide on a post-ride lunch location when we get back to Pt Richmond at the end. TM pace, but slower or faster riders comfortable navigating the route are all welcome (download it onto whatever device you use, but note that I'm not planning on doing the mid-ride lunch stop). Join me on Sunday to ride this super fun, gorgeous loop out of Plymouth, CA. The Sierra Century used to be held by the Sacramento Wheelmen but the organized event IS NO MORE! However, the route lives on - a few of us did this a few years ago and had a great time!
Plymouth is far away! You may consider staying the weekend in Gold Country - Sutter Creek is nearby and super cute! Also I may be able to accommodate you in Auburn - but my space is limited and I can't promise anything (and honestly, Auburn is still about an hour away from Plymouth).
