TUE AUG 3 - TUE AUG 31 5!/0/45 * August GPC Challenge Rides - Epic Climb Series
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859
Meet at 8:00 am
Mandatory pre-registration

GPC Epic Climb August Challenge – Montevina & Montebello Roads - 5,600 feet of climbing - 45 miles

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun self-directed rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series on your own schedule within a calendar month. Complete the minimum rides to be entered into the raffle for a custom buff and each climb completed will be tallied for the annual award of a patch or the rights to purchase the custom Jersey.

After a month off, Epic Climbs is back for August with a ride in the South Bay and two beautiful epic climbs that I recently rode and highly recommend. It starts at a Campbell Safeway and follows the Los Gatos Creek trail for the first half dozen miles. There are a couple very ridable gravel sections along the Creek and the Lexington Reservoir but be prepared to dismount and walk a couple short steep gravel sections. After crossing over Hwy 17 you’ll soon be on a beautiful 4 mile 1900 foot climb of Montevina Road. When the pavement ends keep going and walk your bike up the last few yards to the gate. Step around the gate and you’ll be on a very ridable dirt trail which will take you to a paved Bohlman Road and down to Saratoga. Bohlman is a very steep one lane road with a great view of the South Bay so be careful, take your time and enjoy the view. Check out downtown Saratoga and to top off your fluids before heading out to Montebello Road. As you ride northbound from Saratoga, just before reaching Montebello Road there is one last chance to fill up at a Cal Fire Station with a hose bib (water). This 4 mile 1800 foot climb up Montebello Road passes by several large vineyards and vistas of the south bay. Look closely and you’ll see spaceship Apple campus in the distance.

For details on the monthly Challenge Ride Series please navigate to the New Rides Page - Challenge Tab. There you'll find details on the monthly raffle, the 30 - 40 or 50 climb patches and Epic Climb Jersey you can earn based on your accomplishments.

Keep Climbing!

Meet at 9:45 am

MJ routed the earlier iteration of this ride. This is mine, version 2.1. We will start from North Berkeley BART this month to give us a little variety. (So far, we've started from Orinda and Rockridge.) Parking is available. If taking BART, note that this station is served by the Richmond-bound train and the latest you can arrive on this particular train is 9:28 (which will probably be the train I will be on, if I don't ride to the ride). From this BART station, we head north towards San Pablo and then southwards on SPDR and Camino Pablo. We'll stop for coffee at Peet's in Orinda (mile 19.1). We continue on Moraga Way before wending through the neighborhood to get on to Canyon and Pinehurst. After we drop down into Montclair and make our way to Rockridge, you have the option of going home or getting back on BART; I noticed some of the third-Sunday regulars live around there or come from SF. The rest of us will ride back to N. Berkeley BART and any points north. Please check the RidewithGPS route here.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Mt. Tamalpais via Stinson Beach
Start Location: Mill Valley Safeway
Optional pre-registration for members

This ride is the real deal. 37.3 miles and 4166 feet of climbing.

Pack your lunch. There are picnic tables and a restroom at Stinson Beach.

For a shorter ride you can cut off ten miles and 700+ ft by returning on Panoramic Hwy instead of the posted Bolinas Fairfax Ridgecrest route. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37179660

To paraphrase Yassir, my swim instructor, Ride with majesty and grace.

Concerning the ride start: do not park in the Safeway parking lot. I park at the Mill Valley Public Safety buildings where they have water and restrooms.

Rain cancels. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

FRI AUG 20 1/LT/15 Bike and Bird the SF Bay Trail, Berkeley to El Cerrito
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: Berkeley - Aquatic Park Playground

Migrant Shorebirds are on their way back to California! Come ride with us to look for returning and resident shorebirds and waders, plus raptors and passerines. This birding ride is co-listed with the Golden Gate Audubon Society. Cathy Bleier (csbleier@sbcglobal.net) from GGAS is co-leading. The Berkeley Bay Trail is crowded even on a Friday, therefore we are restricting participation to 10 (that means 12 bikes on the trail). Mandatory registration is on the GGAS website (https://goldengateaudubon.org/event/bike-august2021/). Click this link for the GGAS listing. Click the registration link there, and close the login page if you are not a member; registering means you agree to both GGAS and GPC waivers.

Aquatic Park is a 10-minute ride from either North Berkeley or Downtown Berkeley BART; there is also parking along Bolivar near where we meet. We’ll ride about 15 mostly flat, paved miles on the Bay Trail, with one short climb over the racetrack and one short stretch on gravel. The route goes over the multi-user bridge, heads a short way south toward Point Emery, and then north past The Meadow (Eastshore State Park), the Race Track, and Pt. Isabel to Meeker Slough.

You will need to be VERY mindful of your stops and pulloffs on these busier-than-ever trails to prevent collisions with pedestrians, dogs and other bikers. Helmets required. Bring binoculars, water and lunch. Weather should mostly be fine with maybe some wind and fog, so wear layers if needed.

We will ride towards the upper end of TM pace, please be prepared to navigate by yourself to the next regroup if you think you might get dropped. Lunch in Pescadero, bring your own snacks.

SAT AUG 28 1/T/56 * Delta Tour to Sacramento
Leader: Mary Ann Jawili     (661) 343-5737
Leader: Jessica Jensen     (510) 508-6389
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Antioch-Sacramento
Start Location: Antioch BART
Mandatory pre-registration
UPDATE:

The ride is cancelled due to poor AQI.

NOTE: Pre-registration is required! Read below for more information.

Join us for a tour of the delta and out to our state capitol! This is a mostly flat ride with some interesting route landmarks and diversions: three bridges, the delta, waterfront country roads, two ferries, and even a mansion. The CA-160 bridge is short and steep. On roads with no shoulder, we may break up into smaller groups and reconvene at predetermined points. Food and restroom at Rio Vista (Mile 16.5) and Clarksburg (Mile 41). Beer and barbecue (with vegetarian options) in Sacramento!

This route is designed to start with the BART train arriving at Antioch at 8:56am.

We’ll return via the 4:55pm Capitol Corridor/Amtrak train back to the East Bay. Buy your ticket with a 50% discount by using promotion code V650 on Capitol Corridor's website. Note their comments about on board bicycle storage: They can hold up to 24 bikes per train but try to accommodate any extras. Bring a face covering.

This is not a no-drop ride. We will ride at a T-pace, which is defined as 10-12 mph on the Three Bears Loop. Given the flatness of this ride, average moving speed will probably be closer to 13-14 mph. Faster riders will have to wait, and slower riders will get dropped.

Poor AQI and/or extreme heat will cancel this ride.

SAT AUG 28 4/TM/66 * The AQI’s Better On The Coast
Leader: Mary Ann Jawili     (661) 343-5737
Leader: Jessica Jensen     (510) 508-6389
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Half Moon Bay - Gazos Creek - Tunitas Creek Variations
Start Location: Half Moon Bay - Fire Station
Optional pre-registration for members

We’ll go at a solid (not strong, not easy) TM pace with regroups to keep us all together.

Start off with the traditional and wonderfully scenic 20-mile roll down Hwy 1 for coastal views and a short visit to Pigeon Point Lighthouse, then a short sprint further south to Gazos Creek Road. Wax poetic on the gentle, lesser traveled spur up to South Fork Gazos Creek Road before rejoining Gazos Creek/Cloverdale Road to Pescadero to share a picnic lunch in the back yard of Norm's Market ("world famous" artichoke bread, sandwiches, pastries, coffees). Bucolic vistas meet nicely patched pavement along the pleasant but arduous climb up the old Stage Road with a (rolling) regroup in San Gregorio, continuing on Stage Road northward to Hwy 1. A quick and breezy descent along the highway to Tunitas Creek Road, regroup/refreshments at the Bike Hut and then up the flats and early climbs on Tunitas Creek Road until Lobitos Creek Road before cutting back toward the coast, sticking to back roads (Verde, Purisma Creek, and a final short, celebratory, leg-burning ascent up Higgins Canyon Road) with just enough rolling and flat miles on the home stretch back to Half Moon Bay to work out the lactic acid.

SAT AUG 28 4!/T/45 * Willow Creek, via Occidental and Moscow Road
Leader: Phil Morton     (510) 847-7651
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Sebastopol - Ragle Rd/Covert Lane
Pre-registration closed. Do not show up if unregistered!
UPDATE:

CANCELED. Due to dubious air quality this ride is canceled. We'll aim to do it after the fire season and before the water season.

From Sebastopol head out to Occidental, and down the Russian River to Hwy 1. Right after crossing the river near Jenner we turn left and ride along the south side of the Russian River for a bit. There are one or two rough spots, but the gravel is hard packed and not hard to ride. After 4 miles there's a gate across the road, and it gets really peaceful for several miles. It's not technical, since it was once a paved road. You can ride it on 25 mm tires, and probably 23 mm tires will also work.

There are one or two really steep bits, but they're short, and it's not a great hardship to walk them. We come out on Coleman Valley Road and continue through Freestone.
The route is in the club library at https://www.grizz.org/routes/detail.php?id=181, except that we take Moscow Road on the south side of the Russian River. For the exact route see https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37252403.

Moscow Road is closed to cars where the road has fallen away, but bikes can get through. Many roads in Sonoma County have been resurfaced, among them Occidental Road, Bohemian Highway, and the first part of Willow Creek road. It's a pleasure to ride them, which wasn't always the case.

The coffee shop in Duncan's Mills has limited offerings, and there's not much at Wild Flour either. You had best bring your own sustenance.

Please print or download your own map, or let me know if you need a printed version of the route.
