A Few Epic Climbs Series: Complete riding 3 of the 4 rides

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends pod or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series on your own schedule within a calendar month. There are 6 climbs in the four rides to be earned this month – Coral Hollow, Patterson Pass, Mt Vision, SPGP, El Toyonal, Mix Canyon. Complete 3 or 4 rides in February to be entered into the raffle for a custom buff and each climb completed will be tallied for the annual award of a patch or the rights to purchase the custom Jersey.

Please see "How It Works" at the bottom of the descriptions of the rides.

As an added incentive we are taking the monthly Challenge Rides to the next level by offering a new GPC Climbers Jersey. The design of the new jersey is in progress but will be based upon the Matt McHugh jersey design. You'll earn the right to purchase this beautiful and unique jersey if you complete 30 of the 50 Epic Series climbing rides by year's end. Custom patches will also be developed to signify 30, 40 or all 50 climbs have been accomplished. Don't wait, get started with the February posted series rides. Any of the epic series rides you completed in November & January will count towards the 2021 annual goal of 30 out of 50. You can also ride any of these 50 Epic Series rides in any order you prefer, please remember to record & send them to ChallengeRides@grizz.org for confirmation & accounting towards your annual goal.

SPGR (Spruce/Grizzly Peak) climb El Toyonal & Lomas Contadas (3,000 Ft & 23 miles)

Mix Canyon & Lake Barryessa Dam (5,350 Ft & 63 Miles)

How Does It Work?

  • Exclusively for GPC members (for insurance and any raffle prizes)
  • Signup & accept the electronic waiver on the GPC Ride webpage
  • Record your ride for insurance* and verification of achievement (use free versions of Ride with GPS or Strava)
  • Share your ride (via email ChallengeRides@grizz.org & share on the GPC Strava Club page)
    • If not a member of the GPC Strava Club please request to join on the GPC Strava Club page
  • Upon achievement of the minimum rides in a monthly challenge series your entry will be included into a raffle for any prizes
  • Upon completing 30 of the 50 Epic Climb Series by Dec 31, 2021 you’ll be entitled to purchase the Epic Climb jersey only available to those who complete the Epic Series of rides. You’ll also be awarded a (free) custom patch signifying the number of climbs completed (30, 40 or 50)

* Please note your club can provide the same medical coverage for the ride routes in the series as if you were on a standard club group ride. Recording of the ride assures verification of riding the mapped route. When riding off the predetermined route coverage is not included just like a club ride (e.g., like riding from home to the meeting location).

TUE FEB 2 5!/TM/10 Tuesday evening ride (repeats weekly)
Leader: Anne Schonfield     (510) 851-4749
Leader: Elizabeth Crocker     (510) 484-1060
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza

Join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). Cyclists of different paces are very welcome to join. South Park is closed to car traffic, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain.

NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels ride. Please contact ride leaders if there's unfavorable weather.

https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2742955390 (this route shows 3 ascents up South Park, we’ll only do 1-2 ascents. Thanks to Nick Umemoto for the route and inspiration!)

Ride will follow GPC Covid-19 protocol, including mandatory pre-registration for members. Please wear face coverings at the start/end and during all regroups.

Meet at 12:45 pm

60 minutes, D pace, 21mph (2.0 w/kg). This ride presented by The Big Ring (TBR) encourages those who want to push their pace a little higher than the standard sub 2.0 w/kg social rides on Zwift. We roll together on the Watopia Waistband route, which is mostly flat. For the best ride experience, please stay by the leader's Yellow Beacon.
