UPDATE:

This weeks route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3464064554915090064 some of these trails are known to stay muddy for a while so I'm playing it safe. Expect steep climbs and possibly still some mud despite my best efforts.

The route will vary week to week but we always start at El Cerrito Plaza BART. I have upgraded this ride to TM to better reflect sorts of riders which typically show up. I will continue riding at the same pace that I always have and we will continue to have frequent regroups so don't let the new pace deter you from showing up. Please join us for the weekly South Park repeats ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually two times is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to stay in shape over the winter!
NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:05 am start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza
Pre-registration

It's such a gorgeous spring weekend - let's ride! Here is a local substitute for Steph and Jess's Healdsburg ride which is now postponed to a future date.

Meet, ready to ride, 9:00am at Spruce and Grizzly Peak. Roll promptly at 9:05. Or meet us at the corner of Wildcat/SPDR/Bear Creek Rds at 9:25 for the 45 mile version. We'll ride some favorite roads in the East Bay Hills: Outbound via SPDR, Alhambra Valley Rd, Franklin Cyn, and McEwen (the steep part downhill, not up!). Carquinez Scenic Dr to Martinez for lunch. Return via Pig Farm and the Bears.

The route is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29105899.

Pre-registration is greatly appreciated - especially if you'll meet us at the 45 mile start point.

Reminder: Sunday is the first day of Daylight Savings Time. Under the circumstances, my personal trick to get to a ride on time (which I'm happy to share) is to turn my clocks ahead by one hour on Saturday evening and use that new schedule right away.

GPC Route: Sonoma Wine Country Loop CCW
Start Location: Esposti Park, WIndsor
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

POSTPONED!!! Thanks to those that signed up to go on this ride, but we've decided to wait for a weekend when more Grizzlies are available. So tomorrow's ride will not be held. Check the list, since Mark may be posting a more local ride option. See everyone sometime soon!

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” -- Susan B. Anthony

Help us celebrate International Women's Day with a favorite ride through the Sonoma wine country. Rolling hills, low traffic, and rows upon rows of vineyards just coming into bloom await us. This is Steph's favorite Bay Area ride (Drake's Beach is the close runner-up, but we already did that!), and you all know that whatever ride Jess is on is her favorite ride. Meet at Esposti Park in Windsor. From there we make our way to lunch on the green in Healdsburg. Lunch options include a kinda-fancy market from which you can get whatever you like, a taqueria just off the green, or coffee and pastries from a local coffee shop -- or fancy ice cream, or you could just bring your own. Do bring water because temperatures may be warm, be prepared for cool temperatures at the start, and 20% or greater chance of rain will cancel -- check the website for any updates the night before. The start location has bathrooms and plenty of parking. Ride is rated TM, but all paces comfortable navigating on their own are welcome. Please download your preferred navigation method prior to the start since there will not be a sweep. It's International Women's Day, so we invite ALL Grizzlies to celebrate "free untrammeled womanhood," the women of GPC, and the women in their lives.

UPDATE:

This is our last ride South Park of the season. Please join us for the final ride + group dinner afterwards. Dinner at approximately 7:15 pm at Barney's on Cedar St and Shattuck Ave in Berkeley. RSVP to Anne for dinner (anne.m.schonfield@gmail.com). We'll start the "Spruce to Space" weekly rides on 3/26.

Meet at 9:40 am for a 10:00 am start
GPC Route: Bears Loop
Start Location: Orinda - San Pablo Dam Rd and Bear Creek Rd
Mandatory pre-registration

If no riders have signed up by 7 a.m. the morning of the ITT/GPC Pace Ride, it will be cancelled. If there is at least one rider signed up, it will go forward and riders can register online up until 9:50 a.m.

Individual Time Trial
Come test your fitness level and get in a great workout by riding the Bears Loop as a time trial. In the ITT, each person rides at his/her own pace (no drafting) to see how fast the Bears Loop can be completed. It’s a great format for pushing yourself to see how fast you can ride the loop.

Pace Group Ride
Ride the Bears Loop at your normal pace to use it to determine your GPC pace (https://www.grizz.org/rides/ratings.php). Or use this ride to train at a particular pace for an upcoming event.

The first rider is off at 10:01 and a rider a minute after that. For the GPC Pace ride, a pace group can start together, or each rider can rider on their own as the ITT riders do. (Regardless of the format, each rider is timed individually.)

Rider finishing times are usually shared in the ride report email to the club. While it is nice to see what times folks ride, reporting of rider times is optional. Also, the ITT is open to both members and non-members; no need to join as in the past.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Solvang Five Canyons
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Pre-registration

See nearly all that Solvang has to offer in one big loop. See Longhorns, Llamas, Buffalo and Magpies! This route has lots of slightly downhill stretches, but the uphills are not slight! Cat Canyon Road is incredibly rough! We will have lunch in Los Alamos, before tackling the horribly rough Drum Canyon Road, then taking relatively smooth roads back to the start.

Current membership in GPC is expected. A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. The route is listed above. Load it to your navigation device or print your own cue sheet. There will not be a paper handout. Please pre-register if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there will not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition make good sense. The first 40 miles does not have easy to get water. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start

See the best of Solvang and get to lunch quicker. Miss the roughest climb that I have ever done, Cat Canyon. After lunch, we tackle the second roughest road in the area. The even shorter ride possibility is to turn around at Fess Parker Winery, and return nearly the same way (26 miles).

A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills or riding with a buddy who knows the route can be very helpful. Print your own cue sheet if needed. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there will not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition make good sense. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

Follow the Big Kids out of town for the first 15 miles of stunning scenery and the turn around at the top of Zaca Mesa on Foxen Canyon Road. After many miles of sublime downhill on Foxen Canyon, you will arrive in Los Olivos, where a sandwich at Panino or a sample of Figueroa Mt Beer awaits.

A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills not needed. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there will not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. See you in Solvang!

To check out the entire series and for more information see our Century Prep Series webpage. Non-members are welcome on all GPC rides, but please note: Because of insurance requirements, we limit participation in GPC rides by non-members to two (2) GPC rides. After you join us for a couple rides, please join the club. Your membership includes excess medical and accident insurance.

This fifth ride in the 2026 Century Prep Series leaves from Orinda BART. Ride north on Camino Pablo, climb Wildcat Canyon, Grizzly Peak Blvd, Skyline Blvd, descend Redwood Road, then return via Pinehurst, Canyon, Moraga Way. Members and nonmembers can all pre-register using the link above to save us time at the start.

The regroups will be at the Island bathrooms in Tilden, then again at Sibley.

This ride is NO DROP. This means nobody will be left behind, no matter their pace or ability. Helmets are required. We look forward to riding with you! Rain cancels. Check this page the day of the ride if weather is dubious.

Leader: Janet Noble     (510) 205-9004    text
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Pre-registration

Scared of Mt Lions? Try this straight out of Sideways route down Santa Rosa Road, turn around 2 miles short of Highway 1 and back to Solvang. On the way back we'll go straight past the Ostriches and tackle that nice little hill at the edge of town. Helmets, cheerful attitudes, and minimal navigation skills. Rain cancels. Temps will be cooler but still two water bottles would be a good idea.

RWGPS Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41271292 (this is probably different than the one in the route libarary)

MON MAR 30 4/T/28 Just Jalama
Leader: Jaz Zaitlin     (510) 393-6602    text
Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
GPC Route: Just Jalama Beach
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Pre-registration

A remote road to the Coast. So remote, a full sized mountain lion slowly crossed the road right in front of Brian on a recent trip (or so he says). No water or bathrooms at the start which is a wide dirt pullout.

This is a beautiful route with just one hill, each way with very little traffic. Lunch is at the store at Jalama Beach Campground (water, restrooms) where you can get a famous Jalama Beach Burger. Or maybe you can find something healthier on the menu.

The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

MON MAR 30 4/TM/53 3/4 Jalama Beach
Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312    text
Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
GPC Route: 3/4 Jalama
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Pre-registration

Join us for this classic route to Jalama Beach. This 53 mile version requires a car shuttle, which we arrange at Happy Hour the night before. Get a lift out to the start on Jalama Road with others who are doing Just Jalama, then ride to the beach. After lunch we ride all the way back to Solvang. There are several other options which can be discussed at Happy Hour. A full out-and-back from Solvang would be about 77 miles. The shortest version (see listing for Just Jalama) is an out and back to Jalama Beach from Highway 1, and it still has plenty of climbing.

The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

TUE MAR 31 5/TM/50 Mt Figueroa Adventure Loop
Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312    text
Meet at 9:00 am
GPC Route: Mt. Figueroa Adventure Loop
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Pre-registration

Today is our day on the mountain. I've listed the traditional loop ride counterclockwise, but we may need to be flexible and substitute the (even steeper) west side up and back or something else depending on weather and road conditions. We'll finalize the night before at our cocktail hour. The loop has idyllic country roads for the first and last 15 miles, with a steep climb over Mt Fig in the middle and an uncomfortably steep descent on some poor pavement. There is a short section of unpaved road near the start of the big climb, and a slippery stream crossing to be very careful about. Lunch at Panino in Los Olivos, but that is very late in the ride so bring snacks. There is no reliable water available until lunch, so bring plenty.

Current membership in GPC is expected. A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Load the route into your navigation device or print your own cue sheet. Please pre-register if you would like the leader to keep some track of you.

TUE MAR 31 3/T/33 Cat Canyon Loop
Leader: Brian Aldrich     (510) 693-0603    text
Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
GPC Route: Cat Canyon Loop
Start Location: Plenty on Bell
Pre-registration

Starting from Plenty on Bell in Los Alamos, experience the incredible Cat Canyon climb without all of the extra mileage. Cross over Hwy 101, toward Alisos Canyon Road, do an incredibly bumpy frontage road, Ride the smooth and serene Alisos canyon, then follow Foxen Canyon north toward your destiny. Cat Canyon is the bumpiest road that I know of, topped off by grades occasionally over 10%! You'll love it! After this very hard one mile climb, you are treated to many miles of downhill, nearly making it all the way back to Los Alamos. Just before Los Alamos you need to cross highway 101, but you can do it in two parts, then easy cruising back to lunch at Plenty on Bell.

Helmets, cheerful attitude, etc. Be ready to ride at 9:45. It starts off easy.

Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections often up hill or flat, but expect some short bumpy descents in the dark.

Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections will be fire roads with two sections of singletrack at the end. We will have regular regroups and there will be an option to skip the singletrack sections at the end of the ride.

This is the first S. Park ride since the clocks changed on 3/8, so this is your chance to ride South Park in full day light! Please join us. We'll continue the S. Park weekly rides until 3/19 (last ride of the season + dinner on 3/19). Then we'll start the "Spruce to Space" weekly rides on 3/26.

Amazing gravel route on the peninsula which starts in Woodside at the Town Hall parking lot, gets the boring Canada road portion done early to warm up and then proceeds to ascend Sweeney ridge after cruising through Portola Highlands Park. After rolling through a neighborhood we ascend Old San Pedro Mountain before descending the same trail/road into Pacifica via Montera and then onto the trails along the ocean in Half Moon Bay.

Depending on the amount of daylight left we stop for a quick lunch in Half Moon Bay before climbing Purisima Trail which is the main event. It’s a dirt version of Tunitas Creek which is among the best trails in the Bay Area. This is an 8 mile climb with 1900’ of elevation. After which we take photos at the top with the sun poking through the fog before descending Kings Mountain road and returning to Woodside.

The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

Join us for the Treasure Island lap, starting at the Bay Bridge base of the Alex Zuckermann bike path. This ride features shorter regroups, a faster T-pace, and sparkling city skylines. Expect one short, steep descent and a challenging half-mile climb off the island (7-10% grade). Ride ends with optional food and drinks at Bay Street or Wondrous Brewing Company. Bring lights and warm layers.

GPC Route:
Mt. Figueroa Adventure Loop
Start Location:
Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn

GPC Route:
Cat Canyon Loop
Start Location:
Plenty on Bell
