SAT OCT 2 1/T/56 The Do-Over: Delta Tour to Sacramento
Leader: Mary Ann Jawili     (661) 343-5737
Leader: Jessica Jensen     (510) 508-6389
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Antioch-Sacramento
Start Location: Antioch BART
Optional pre-registration for members
UPDATE:
  • Capital Corridor is offering a 30% discount for all one-way and round-trip fares through the end of the year. No advance purchase required. Buy online with the promo code V530.
  • Sacramento food and drinks will be at Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse
  • If either ferry is out of service, we will follow this route instead. Ferry status will be confirmed in the morning before we roll.

Join us for a tour of the delta and out to our state capitol! This is a mostly flat ride with some interesting route landmarks and diversions: three bridges, the delta, waterfront country roads, two ferries, and even a mansion. The CA-160 bridge is short and steep. On roads with no shoulder, we may break up into smaller groups and reconvene at predetermined points. Food and restroom at Rio Vista (Mile 16.5) and Clarksburg (Mile 41). Beer and barbecue (with vegetarian options) in Sacramento.

This route is designed to start with the BART train arriving at Antioch at 8:56am.

Riders are responsible for getting their own Amtrak tickets and getting on the train. Leaders will take riders to the train station in time for the 4:55pm Capitol Corridor/Amtrak train back to the East Bay. Riders may take a later train if they want. Note that there's a Buy-One-Get-Five-Half-Off deal; riders are welcome to self-organize to take advantage of the deal.

This is not a no-drop ride. We will ride at a T-pace, which is defined as 10-12 mph on the Three Bears Loop. Given the flatness of this ride, average moving speed will probably be ~13 mph. Faster riders will have to wait, and slower riders will get dropped.

Poor AQI and/or extreme heat will cancel this ride.

WED OCT 6 5!/T/40 Wed Ride - Deb's Diversions Mt Diablo via Northgate
Leader: Phil Morton     (510) 852-9663
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Optional pre-registration closed (sign in at the start)

Deb's Diversions,

Up and down Mt. Diablo. We will start at Heather Farm and ride out and back from Heather Farm Park, going up Northgate, to the junction and onwards and upwards. The summit is optional. There is potable water at the Ranger Station at the junction. Completing the ride to the summit will mark a milestone in my rehab after knee surgery.

Meet at 10:00 a.m. at Heather Farm Park. To get there, you can take BART to Pleasant Hill and pick up the Iron Horse Trail at the Treat Blvd overcrossing. From the Iron Horse Trail, take the first left onto the Contra Costa Canal Trail and then right on the little bridge over to Heather Farm. See https://ridewithgps.com/routes/1098258. The BART trains run every 15 minutes. I plan to catch the 9:17 train at Rockridge.

Lunch will be in the strip mall at San Carlos and Ygnacio Valley Road.

Driving instructions: Take Ygnacio Valley Rd. east from Hwy 680 (or WC BART). About 2 miles east of 680 turn left on San Carlos Dr. Meet in the second parking area on the left - across the road from the ball fields.

The forecast high at the summit is 63. Rain or a 30% or greater chance in the forecast on the morning of the ride will cancel the ride.

If you have questions, call Phil at (510) 847-7651 or email pmorton.cal@gmail.com.

Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Rockville to Lake Hennessey

The inland temperatures are finally easing, which allows us to explore away from the coast. This new-to-Duros ride starts in nearby Rockville, but extends up into the Napa Valley as far as Lake Hennessey. We'll stop for a snack at Silverado Market (mile 21) and have lunch at Turtle Rock (mile 46). The lunch stop is mostly a (drinking) bar, so I suggest bringing an extra (nutrition) bar in case you can't find suitable food there. There just aren't any other options in the area.

Park in the back of the Rockville Bike parking lot, not in front of the businesses. Please pre-register if you can. Faster riders are welcome if they don't mind waiting for regroups.

SUN OCT 10 3/TM/60 Solvang Five Canyons Loop

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Solvang Five Canyons
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Optional pre-registration for members

See nearly all that Solvang has to offer in one big loop. See Longhorns, Llamas, Buffalo and Davey Crockett! We will have an elegant lunch in Los Alamos, before tackling the horribly rough Drum Canyon Road, then trying to sneak by Figeuroa Mt Brewing Company before arriving back at the start.

A cheerful adventurous attitude is encouraged. Strong navigation skills or riding with a buddy who knows the route can be very helpful. Print your own cue sheet if needed. Please sign in online if you would like the leader to keep some track of you; there may not be a paper sign in sheet at the ride start. Two full water bottles and some nutrition make good sense. The standards listed in the Rider Guidelines on our website always apply.

SUN OCT 10 3/T/46 Solvang Four Canyons Loop

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Solvang Four Canyons Loop
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Optional pre-registration for members

See the best of Solvang and get to lunch quicker. Miss the roughest climb that I have ever done, Cat Canyon. After lunch, we tackle the second roughest road in the area. The even shorter ride possibility is to turn around at Fess Parker Winery, and return nearly the same way (26 miles).

GPC Route: 3/4 Jalama
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Optional pre-registration for members

Join us for this classic route to Jalama Beach, done a multitude of ways. This 53 mile version requires a car shuttle. There are many other options which can be discussed at Happy Hour the night before. A full out-and-back from Solvang would be about 77 miles.

MON OCT 11 4/T/28 Just Jalama

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: 3/4 Jalama
Start Location: Jalama Road pullout
Optional pre-registration for members

A remote road to the Coast. By remote I mean a full sized mountain lion crossed the road right in front of me, slowly, last trip. This is a beautiful route with just one hill, each way. This ends at Jalama Beach where you can get a famous Jalama Beach Burger. Or you can get something healthier and make it back. The crux of this route is learning to say Halama, not Jalama. This route follows the first 28 miles of the 3/4 Jalama route linked above, starting at the pullout on Jalama road.

Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense. Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn

This is the big one, Mt Diablo on steroids, maybe similar to Mt Ventoux, except with much steeper pitches! You then descend down the Westside, and have lunch at Panino in Los Olivos. Then you can take Ballard Canyon or flatter roads back to Solvang.

Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense. TUE OCT 12 3!/T/29 A Taste of Figueroa
Leader: Brian Aldrich     (510) 693-0603
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: A Taste of Figueroa
Start Location: Solvang - Royal Copenhagen Inn
Optional pre-registration for members

For those of us not bulked up on steroids or tracking our watts of output, I have a pleasant offering. We will start with Ballard Canyon that we started our week with, cross through Los Olivos onto Figueroa Mountain Road. We will pass miles and miles of the Chamberlain Ranch, that is the family of Wed Ride cofounder Deb O'Brien. We may have to stop for a cattle drive. As things get more remote we pass the Neverland Ranch, which you cannot see, but there may be groups of worshipers at the gate. Michael is not home. For our taste of the big Fig, we will cross the bridge and the cattle grate and ride to the top of the first switchback at around 17%, for those that might like to try a little more, it eases of maybe a percentage point and stays there for quite a while. We return to Los Olivos, have a lovely lunch at Panino and return to Solvang on flatter roads. Don't miss the miniature horses!

Two full water bottles and some nutrition makes good sense. SUN OCT 17 5/TM/47 Century Condensed North Loop
Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Optional pre-registration for members
UPDATE:

We're riding! Riders not certain of the route should download the RideWithGPS route or cue sheet to their devices or print a hard copy -- leader will not have hard copies at the start.

NOTE this is NOT a NO-DROP ride. Leader will ride a strong TM pace. We will keep track of each other and have two re-groups: a short one early-on at the park in Pinole where we can use restrooms and top off water, and another at the park in Crockett (bathrooms may or may not be open). Otherwise we will keep moving -- we have a BBQ to get to! Those riding at a slower pace should be prepared to navigate on their own if necessary. No lunch stop, so be prepared with snacks and water to carry you through.

Be advised that the "5" rating is real, and note the elevation profile on the ridewithgps map. In light of the elevation profile, the overall elevation gain of 3,840', the 21% pitch of McEwen, and the lack of any SAG support, those who have not ever ridden the century route may find the Three Bears ride better suited to the day. That said, this is a great, challenging ride, befitting our club. Come ride, get good and hungry, and then relax and enjoy the BBQ at the finish.

Come ride a condensed version of the Century North Loop, then join the BBQ afterwards for to learn about volunteering for the century!

Route map: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37781538

Description: Head north along Camino Pablo/San Pablo Dam Rd to Castro Ranch Rd. Take Alhambra Valley Rd/Pinole Valley Rd to San Pablo Ave/Parker Ave, Pomona St, and Carquinez Scenic Drive. Sharp right on McEwen (shift down first) and Franklin Canyon to Alhambra Ave/Alhambra Valley Rd. Up and over Pig Farm Hill and left on Bear Creek Rd. Finish on Camino Pablo and Orinda Way to Orinda Community Park.

SUN OCT 17 4/T/23 Bears Loop

GPC Route: ASSR - Larghetto
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot

MON OCT 18 5/LT/32 or 38 Slow and Easy! Mt. Tam, counterclockwise, summit optional
Leader: Chris Witt
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:10 am start
GPC Route: Mt. Tam birthday ride
Start Location: Mill Valley Safeway
Optional pre-registration for members

Since the weather is looking unsettled Wed and going forward, let's ride on Monday. Weather is predicted to be cool, but sunny, in Mill Valley and on Mt Tam.

Meet at the Safeway in Mill Valley, but park remotely. We'll ride to Fairfax first, even though the Scoop won't be open yet. The suburbs with their frequent stop signs and signals are dispensed with in the first 9 miles, and this is the way I like to do it. Then it’s 14 mi to Rock Springs (or 17 miles to the summit) and part of the way back down before 'services’ and traffic. Make sure you have enough food and water for those uphill back roads.

Let's ride together to Fairfax, a section with multiple cues. Then we’ll have strategic regroups during the rest of the ride. I hope some other slow riders join us. There are printable cue sheets and a ridewithgps link at https://www.grizz.org/routes/detail.php?id=143. Please print your own cue sheets if you can.

I will really appreciate it if you preregister. If you can't preregister or print your own cue sheet, contact Pat.

https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2651844691

Please bring front and rear lights and set them both to solid and not blinking. Riders are asked to be familiar and comfortable with drafting, cornering, descending and pace-lining. The current forecast is rain on Wednesday, but if not we can try Phil's improved bay trail ride starting at Pinole, lunch in Martinez, return by Pig Farm.

I will use EpicRideWeather at 7:30 on Wednesday to cancel the ride (30% chance of rain is the threshold).

You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

Join us for a quick, mid-week leg-stretcher while there's still enough light to ride after work! We will ride up to Tunnel via Broadway, then take Grizzly Peak to Claremont. Our goal is to get to the bottom of Claremont by Sunset, so we will be leaving promptly at the meetup time of 5:05pm. This is also timed with BART trains that are set to arrive at 5:02 and 5:03pm. Please be sure to bring lights as we will likely be finishing up the ride just after sunset. RideWithGPS link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37770859

Meet at 9:30 am   Rain Date: Fri Oct 22
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side

UPDATE:

Today's ride is canceled due to high probability of precipitation along with a wet start due to rain last night. We'll try again on the rain date, which is tomorrow. Check that listing for possible cancellation too. The forecast is still pretty negative.

It looks like the east bay is our best hope for staying dry, but Check back for possible cancellation. Note the rain date tomorrow, but that is also questionable.

Meet at Spruce and Grizzly at 9:30 or meet the group at the foot of Wildcat at approximately 10:00. We'll ride out to Martinez for lunch via SPDR, Alhambra, and pig farm and Franklin Canyon to McEwen. Map and cue at RideWithGPS.

FRI OCT 22 3/TM/58 [Rain Date] Duros West - Berkeley to Martinez
Meet at 9:30 am
UPDATE:

Today's rain date ride is also canceled. I think there will be an opportunity to get out and ride in the afternoon, but the morning still seems too risky to me. See you next week!

SAT OCT 23 4!/M/101 Mt Hamilton cw
Leader: Ted Ognibene     (510) 914-1065
Meet at 7:15 am   Rain Date: Sun Oct 24
Start Location: Livermore - Ernie Rodrigues Softball fields
Optional pre-registration for members
UPDATE:

The ride is on for Saturday! Weather models show that the rain is unlikely to start before the evening. So come on out before we have to trade in our bikes for kayaks

Meet at 7:15, roll out by 7:30 from the Softball Fields in Livermore, ride out Mines Rd and climb Mt Hamilton from the scenic San Antonio Valley. Drop down into San Jose/Milpitas, work our way to and ride along Calaveras to Sunol, then back to Pleasanton and Livermore. Hopefully, the Fire Station just before the Junction will have water as the last time I was at the Junction (about a month ago) they claimed to not have potable water. The visitor center at the top of Hamilton is closed but there is water at the top (just no vending machines). Several places to refuel in San Jose and in Sunol. Given the time of year, I was not planning on long stops so as to be back before dark. That said, bring lights, just in case. You can view the route here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37805504. Optional pre-registration is requested.

SAT OCT 23 2/LT/20 Bike and Bird the Alameda Creek Trail and Coyote Hills
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Union City BART

This birding ride is co-listed with the Golden Gate Audubon Society. Cathy Bleier (csbleier@sbcglobal.net) from GGAS is co-leading. Meet at 10:00 a.m., ready to ride, at the Union City BART station by the ticket machines. Leaders plan to be on trains arriving at 9:40 and 9:46. Ride with us along Alameda Creek to Coyote Hills looking for waterbirds, raptors and passerines. Due to drought the creek and main marsh may be drier than usual and waterbird numbers lower than usual, but we also usually see a good assortment of passerines and raptors on this trip. The approximate cycling route is here.

Bring binoculars, snacks, lunch and water; we won’t pass places to buy food. Wear layers to be comfortable on this leisurely paced ride. Bicycle helmets required. Rain or poor air quality (due to smoke) cancels. Call or email Pat Greene about weather or smoke-related cancellations, and Cathy Bleier with any other questions. Look for updates on the status of the ride on GPC-talk or this listing.

Registration is mandatory and is on the GGAS site. The GGAS listing, including a link to registration, is here: https://goldengateaudubon.org/event/alameda-coyote-bike-october/. Registration opens Oct 9 at 10 am. Registering for this ride means that you accept the waivers of both clubs.

SAT OCT 30 4!/0/46 Willow Creek Road redux
Leader: Phil Morton     (510) 852-9663
Leader: Nikki Ellman     (510) 517-8647
Meet at 10:00 am
GPC Route: Sebastopol - Willow Creek
Start Location: Sebastopol - Ragle Rd/Covert Lane
Optional pre-registration for members

From Sebastopol head out to Occidental, and down the Russian River to Hwy 1. Right after crossing the river near Jenner we turn left and ride along the south side of the Russian River for a bit. There are one or two rough spots, but the gravel is hard packed and not hard to ride. After 4 miles there's a gate across the road, and it gets really peaceful for several miles. It's not technical, since it was once a paved road. You can ride it on 25 mm tires, and probably 23 mm tires will also work. Since the unpaved parts are decayed asphalt, it should be rideable unless there's a lot of heavy rain.

There are one or two really steep bits, but they're short, and it's not a great hardship to walk them. We come out on Coleman Valley Road and continue through Freestone. The route is in the club library at https://www.grizz.org/routes/detail.php?id=181, except that we take Moscow Road on the south side of the Russian River. For the exact route see https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37252403.

Moscow Road is closed to cars where the road has fallen away, but bikes can get through. Many roads in Sonoma County have been resurfaced, among them Occidental Road, Bohemian Highway, and the first part of Willow Creek road. It's a pleasure to ride them, which wasn't always the case.

The coffee shop in Duncan's Mills has limited offerings, and there's not much at Wild Flour either. You had best bring your own sustenance.

Please print or download your own map, or let me know if you need a printed version of the route.
