The pace groups are named after musical tempi: Largo, Adagio, Andante, Allegretto, and Presto. Click on the tempo for the exact route. More information about this ride, excluding route details, is posted on-line at http://www.grizz.org/rides/assr.php. Rain cancels. SAT NOV 17 5!/M/67 Billy Goat Ride - Warm Springs BART back to Berkeley via Calaveras Road
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859
Meet at 9:04 am
Start Location: Warm Springs BART
UPDATE:

RIDE IS CANCELED DUE TO THE AIR QUALITY!

Once again SFPUC has decided to extend the Calaveras Road closure thru the end of 2018 so a new route and meet up time.

5!/M/73 Ride to Mt Umunhum from East San Jose.  Meet at  the Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot at 4055 Evergreen Village Square #140 San Jose, CA 95135.    8am arrival with ride time 8:15am.

Little known Mt Umunhum is the 4th highest peak of the Santa Cruz Mountain Range and reaches an elevation of 3488ft.  Once sacred to the Ohlone Indians and closed for decades as a cold war radar post, was recently restored and opened last year to the public.  Its a beautiful and challenging ride.   The route starts with a warmup through the Coyote Ridge Open Space Reserve before descending and passing by the Calero Resevoir and through the Historic town of Almaden (quicksilver mining till 1975).   Just past Almaden a turn onto Hicks Road begins a 6 mile 2700 foot climb to the top of Mt. Umunhum (9% ave grade).  There you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the South Bay.    We can use the Walmart bathrooms prior to starting with a second food/water stop at mile 26 in Almaden  prior to the climb.  There is no water on Mt Umunhum  so I suggest you bring two large bottles (or more).  I have room for 2 more if anyone wants to carpool.   Feel free to email or call with any questions.   The route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28548892/edit

Billy Goats are the challenging hill climbs of SF Bay Area.   A  comprensive listing of Billy Goats is on the Almaden Cycling Touring Club (ACTC) website at  https://actc.org/routes/bg/index.php#local?region=all.

A GPC Billy Goat Ride will be a friendly yet challenging and scenic ride with approximately 1K of climbing per 10 miles (more or less).  Ride length will be 60 to 80 miles so we can get going and get back in a reasonable amount of time with 1 or 2 efficient stop times to rest & refuel.  There will be regroups along the way to keep us  togeather.

This month we'll start from the Warm Springs BART near the station entrance.  I'll arrive on the 9:04 Train and be ready to roll by 9:15am.   The ride is 67 miles with 6300ft of billy goats including Calavares, Palomares, Redwood & Pinehurst ending at the corner of Spruce and Grizzly Peak.   There's a bail out at mile 40 at the Castro Valley BART Station.   The 1st stop will be in Sunol and a second in Castro Valley.    Feel free to email me at tdunscom@ix.netcom.com  to let me know you're coming or have any questions.  Here is the link to the route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28620136.
