SAT FEB 22 1/L/20 Bike and Bird the San Leandro Shoreline
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: San Leandro BART
UPDATE:

BART recently updated schedules. The train from SF is now scheduled to arrive San Leandro at 9:49.

Meet outside the pay area on the west side of the station. Leaders plan to be on trains scheduled to arrive at 10:00 and 9:56 from SF and El Cerrito, respectively. If you drive to the start, be at the station ready to roll at 10:00.  We will ride up to 20 flat miles on paved or packed dirt trails and city streets. Shortcuts are possible. Bring binoculars and wear layers to stay warm on this leisurely paced ride. Bring snacks, lunch and water; we won’t pass places to buy. Bicycle helmets required. We will cycle urban streets from the BART station to the Bay Trail and then proceed to bike and bird the shoreline to view wintering ducks and shorebirds, as well as raptors and passerines.

The Bay Trail south of Grant Ave is unpaved. If you are uncomfortable on hard-packed dirt, join us to Grant Ave (where you can retrace to San Leandro BART or escape to Bay Fair BART). We will plan to bird down to Winton Ave, or time permitting, all the way to the Hayward Interpretive Center. This birding ride is co-listed with Golden Gate Audubon, with Cathy Bleier co-leading. Rain cancels. If the weather is questionable, look for updates on the status of the ride on the GPC website. If you have questions, call or email Pat.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
Start Location: Nicasio

Leap Year -- now that's something to wrap your mind around. Let's celebrate our extra day with a favorite rolling ride from Nicasio out to Drake’s Beach in the Pt Reyes National Seashore. We’ll start by taking in the Nicasio reservoir, cross over Platform Bridge and then head up Olema Hill to Pt Reyes before heading out Bear Valley Road and Sir Frances Drake to the coast for lunch (picnic tables and bathrooms available, sandwiches can be purchased at the excellent deli along the way). After lunch we’ll head back to Pt Reyes Station for an optional re-group at the feed store coffee hut before the short section left to Nicasio. Expect at least two significant climbs – Olema Hill and the hill after Inverness leading up to the park – and lots more good uphill grades over the rollers as we make our way out to the coast, not to mention the leg-cruncher to get back up to the main road from the beach after lunch. We may be treated to huge bull elephant seals lazing away on the beach, and to Tule Elk on the hills near the coast. Leader rides at a fast TM pace; other paces welcome for those comfortable following a cue sheet (you won't get lost). Bring water, lunch or money to buy at the deli in Inverness Park, and clothing suitable for the weather. 20% chance or more of rain will cancel; call the leader by 9:00 that morning if in doubt.

Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312
Meet at 9:30 am

SAT MAR 7 3!/M/100 (or 120) Del Puerto Loop
Leader: Mark Abrahams     (510) 524-1294
Meet at 7:30 am   Rain Date: Sun Mar 8
Start Location: Pleasanton - Neal & Railroad Ave

This is the classic GPC Del Puerto loop from Pleasanton. A fabulous variety of terrain for riding, sightseeing, climbing (including one 1.5 mile steep pitch, hence the "!" in the listing), descending, pacelining (optional), and a bit of craft beer drinking too (also optional).

In 120 miles we'll traverse the Livermore Valley; ride out to the Central Valley; skirt around Tracy and Patterson; climb Del Puerto Canyon to San Antonio Junction; climb away from the Junction and zoom down Mines Road; and finally re-traverse the Livermore Valley back to Pleasanton. Note for those who have ridden that "other, younger" bike club's route recently: We follow a classic, different, and IMHO better route through both valleys, including vineyard and foothill views through the Livermore valley and the historic Hwy 33 through Vernalis and Westley in the Central Valley. The route includes 3 rest stops. It has no shortcuts or bailouts.

For the Pleasanton (120mi) start, be ready to ride at 7:35am - please arrive long enough in advance to get ready. Prompt 7:40am departure. Location: Pleasanton at Railroad Ave just north of W. Neal (between First and Main Sts). Nice public restrooms are nearby, one block south (but if you might need the restroom, please arrive and be parked by 07:15 latest).

A shorter (101 mile) option is available, starting in Livermore. For this, meet us at the intersection of Concannon Blvd and S Livermore Ave, on the south corner of the intersection. Please be there, ready to ride, at 08:20 (although our exact arrival time is not possible to predict). There's a parking lot on the north corner, across the street. The location is about 3/4 mi beyond (southeast of) Livermore Civic Center. RSVP's are appreciated, in any case, for map count.

Three food stops: A convenience store near Tracy, about 1/4-way (but no restrooms, alas); sitdown lunch near Patterson, about 1/2-way; sitdown refreshments at The Junction in San Antonio Valley, about 3/4-way.

Bring lights in case of a later return than expected, especially if you're doing the 120 mile route. Be prepared for chilly morning weather.

The route: ridewithgps.com/routes/26625111. Paper maps are available, but if you want one please RSVP so that I can bring enough.

NWS PoPs 20% or more will likely postpone the ride to Sunday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before or check the online listings for an update - don't assume anything.

SAT MAR 7 4/TM/62 Up and Down -- Morgan Territory BART to BART
Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: Concord BART

We'll start with a long warm-up along Clayton Road before the climbing begins, then huff and puff our way to the top of Morgan Territory before the hair-raising descent down the other side. Bring water and snacks to get you through to our late-lunch stop in Pleasanton. Meet at Concord BART station at 9:30 a.m., roll at 9:45. This will be a BART to BART ride, beginning at Concord BART and ending at Castro Valley BART, though the leader may continue on to Bayfair BART with those better-served by getting on the Fremont-to-Richmond line. 20% chance of rain cancels, contact leader the night before if the weather forecast is iffy -- no, we will not do that descent in the rain, it's scary enough on dry roads. But if we can't have rain, let's at least ride.

Meet at 9:00 am

Join our 9th annual spring trip to Solvang and Paso Robles. You can participate in some or all of the rides, or do other rides on your own. There are lots of options, and the returning veterans can help you choose.

We will be staying at the Royal Copenhagen in Solvang the nights of April 11th through 14th. Call (800) 624-6604 for reservations.  We will be staying at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles the nights of April 15th and 16th. Call (805) 238-2770 for reservations. In both cases, tell them your are with Grizzly Peak Cyclists. We have a block of rooms reserved at the AAA rate. You can also choose other accommodations if you wish.

We will do rides such as the Solvang Time Trial Loop, Five Canyons Loop, Mt Figueroa Loop, Jalama Beach, Pozo Loop, Tour of Paso Robles, and the Peachy Canyon Loop!

We will have nightly “Happy Hours” at our hotel to discuss the next day’s route(s). Then we all may go to a suggested restaurant together, but there are many choices, and we often break up into several smaller groups. In the morning, we will start most rides at 9 a.m. right from our hotel. There may be changes to who leads, and in some cases a ride may not even be led, but there will always be great riding options available.

Please RSVP to Brian with your likely dates and hotels. Include your email and mobile phone so you can be kept up to date on any changes. Grizzly Peak membership ($15) is expected.
