MON JAN 20, 2020 Today
MON JAN 20 4/TM/40 * MLK Day on the Carquinez Scenic Drive -- Pinole to Martinez
Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Pinole to Martinez via Alhambra Valley
Start Location: Pinole - Park

Shamelessly borrowing from JAZ, who was kind enough to submit this into the GPC route database, we will enjoy the MLK Day holiday on a lollipop route from Pinole Park to Martinez via Alhambra Valley. Over Pig Farm, then Franklin Canyon to Cummings Skyway and down Crockett Blvd to an optional stop in Crockett Hills Park (restrooms and water). Then it's on to Carquinez Scenic Drive and the George Miller Trail to Martinez where we'll regroup, refuel and coffee-up at the Starbucks plaza (other options available for those opposed to large corporate entities). Return via Alhambra Valley. 20% chance of rain or more will cancel, call the leader by 9:00 a.m. if in doubt. Hardy souls wanting more miles can start anywhere they like (Orinda BART, junction of Wildcat and SPDR?), but be aware that it's longer to the park than you may think. Leader rides a TM pace, but everyone comfortable at following a cue sheet or the ridewithgps cues is welcome.

TUE JAN 21 5!/MB,M,TM/13 South Park Scramble (repeats weekly)
Leader: Nick Umemoto
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza
UPDATE:

Monday Jan 20:  Forecasted rain is over 50% for Tuesday evening.  Ride is cancelled unless weather forecast changes.  Latest update by 1PM Tuesday 1/21 if weather changes.  If no further update, ride CANCELLED.

You can think of this short (distance) ride like an evening spin class with good intervals. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park one - three times (round trip). Cyclists of different paces are welcomed on this ride such as MB, M, TM. Slower paces may climb less vertical feet and ride fewer miles than faster riders. At this time of the year South Park should be closed to motor vehicle traffic. If you complete 3 round trip ascents up South Park, expect 13 miles and about 2,500 feet of elevation gain. If you can't meet us at the start, feel free to join us along South Park Dr.

Please bring front and rear lights and set your lights to steady and not blinking. Ride route subject to change without notice. 20% chance or greater of rain cancels ride. Please check the website for ride updates if there's unfavorable weather.

THU JAN 23 3!/TM/62 Duros West - Marshall Wall
Leader: Mark Nienberg     (510) 812-9312
Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center

From our Marinwood start, we will ride to Nicasio, then the Cheese Factory, Hicks Valley, and over the Marshall Wall to Hwy 1. Lunch in Pt. Reyes Station before completing the loop.

Shorten the ride to about 42 miles by starting in Nicasio. We should pass through there about 10:20 or so.

SAT JAN 25 3/M/102 * Marinwood Marshall Loop featuring (hopefully) newborn lambs on Marshall/Petaluma road [Rain Date]
See the listing for Sat Jan 18. If that ride was rained out, we will try again today. Contact the ride leader if you aren't sure.
SAT JAN 25 5!/M/70 to 103 * Double Summit of Mt Umunhum and Mt Hamilton
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859
Meet at 8:00 am for a 8:15 am start   Rain Date: Sun Jan 26
Start Location: Walmart Neighborhood Market
Optional pre-registration for members

Beautiful but very difficult ride from East San Jose to Mt Umunhum and back with second summit of Mt Hamilton. Total distance is 103 miles with over 12.5k of climbing. Those wanting something less can skip Mt Hamilton which ends at about 70 miles and 7k of climbs. Here is the route on RideWithGPS.

Meet at the Walmart Neighborhood Market rear parking lot. The Market has a bathroom food and drink for last minute needs. We'll ride through a beautiful reserve before dropping down to cross Hwy 101 towards Almaden. A brief stop at mile 30 to fill up with water as the last 10-12 miles up Mt Umunhum has none. Umunhum is the 3rd tallest peak in the Bay Area so expect a long steep climb while enjoying the view.

We'll Gather the troops at the summit, check out the restored Ohlone Indian site, and head back to East San Jose. We'll take another break near the starting point (lots of choices) and gather ourselves for the short but steep climb on Quimby Road to get to Mt Hamilton Road for the 12 miles to the summit.

Bring lights as it might get dark on the final descent.

SAT JAN 25 1!/TM/40 (return may include headwind on bridge) * North Berkeley BART - Larkspur Landing out and back
Leader: Jim Clara     (510) 387-1255
Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start
Start Location: North Berkeley BART

Here is the route on RideWithGPS.

Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:05 am start
Start Location: West Dublin Pleasanton BART

Shamelessly borrowing from Steve Tracy who led this ride back in November, we'll do it again because it truly is a great ride.  Out Foothill and Calaveras roads to the far side of the reservoir and turn back before the drop towards Milpitas (or you could drop down the wall and then come back up for some hardcore points!). Food stop on the way back in Sunol, either at the mini-store or at the very nice lunch place. Meet in the Stoneridge Mall parking lot just south of the BART station. Second to last stop on BART, not the last station. Similar to route ID 80 except start location and route through Pleasanton.  There was a GPS route created for Steve's ride, so feel free to look for that wherever one finds such things.  Leader will also have written cue sheets.  20% or greater chance of rain cancels; call the leader by 8:30 if in doubt.  Otherwise time your arrival so that we can roll as soon as the BART riders arrive.  Pre-ride bathrooms available in the BART station or at the Stoneridge Mall.

Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start   Rain Date: Sun Feb 2
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center

Let's put in some time on the bike on Super Saturday, so as to not feel guilty about all those chicken wings, chili, chips and dip and whatever else might be on the menu at game time the following day. We'll ride the "One Bakery" Lucas Valley, Cheese Factory, Marshall Wall, Pt Reyes Station loop. Lots of miles, some challenging hills, a "!" for getting up the Marshall Wall, and then the roll down the coast to either the Bovine or the leader's new preference of the picnic tables and coffee hut at the feed store on the other side of the street. Bring snacks to get you through until our late-ride stop in Pt Reyes Station. Note: 20% or better chance of rain will POSTPONE UNTIL SUPER SUNDAY – call leader by 8:30 that morning if in doubt. Those wishing to shave off mileage are welcome to meet the group in Nicasio at approximately 10:45-11:00, which will reduce the overall mileage to 40.

Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Europa Hof-Brau, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14580950. Leader: Brian Aldrich     (510) 693-0603
Meet at 9:00 am

Join our 9th annual spring trip to Solvang and Paso Robles. You can participate in some or all of the rides, or do other rides on your own. There are lots of options, and the returning veterans can help you choose.

We will be staying at the Royal Copenhagen in Solvang the nights of April 11th through 14th. Call (800) 624-6604 for reservations.  We will be staying at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles the nights of April 15th and 16th. Call (805) 238-2770 for reservations. In both cases, tell them your are with Grizzly Peak Cyclists. We have a block of rooms reserved at the AAA rate. You can also choose other accommodations if you wish.

We will do rides such as the Solvang Time Trial Loop, Five Canyons Loop, Mt Figueroa Loop, Jalama Beach, Pozo Loop, Tour of Paso Robles, and the Peachy Canyon Loop!

We will have nightly “Happy Hours” at our hotel to discuss the next day’s route(s). Then we all may go to a suggested restaurant together, but there are many choices, and we often break up into several smaller groups. In the morning, we will start most rides at 9 a.m. right from our hotel. There may be changes to who leads, and in some cases a ride may not even be led, but there will always be great riding options available.

Please RSVP to Brian with your likely dates and hotels. Include your email and mobile phone so you can be kept up to date on any changes. Grizzly Peak membership ($15) is expected.
