Ride Schedule for December 2020
Leader: Anne Schonfield (510) 851-4749 text
Leader: Elizabeth Crocker (510) 484-1060
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza
Join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). Cyclists of different paces are very welcome to join. South Park is closed to car traffic, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain.
NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels ride. Please contact ride leaders if there's unfavorable weather.
https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2742955390 (this route shows 3 ascents up South Park, we’ll only do 1-2 ascents. Thanks to Nick Umemoto for the route and inspiration!)
Ride will follow GPC Covid-19 protocol, including mandatory pre-registration for members. Please wear face coverings at the start/end and during all regroups.

GPC Peer to Pier Ride Challenge December 1 to December 31
Early 20th Century, before the bridges spanning the San Francisco Bay were constructed, the Bay was home to one of the most extensive ferry systems in the world. This month's ride is designed to enjoy the waterfront and learn a little history through the remains of some incredible facilities that provided access to San Francisco from the East Bay. This ride is dead flat and includes 7 stops to admire the views, solve two clues and find a hidden cache. This map starts at Downtown Oakland 12th St BART and ends at the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station. Feel free to start and end wherever you like, as long as all seven stops are made. The stops and clues are embedded in the Ride-with-GPS map but they are also listed on a google document at the link below if you’d prefer to print and take it with you.
Be sure to join the GPC Strava club, and record the ride on your phone or bike computer. After you complete the ride and post it to Strava, rename it to “GPC Peer to Pier Challenge” and attach your selfies. Those that sign up, complete a route and solve the three (3) clues, as proven by the posted Strava ride with selfies, will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a newly designed club buff. The winner will be announced sometime in January..

Stop #1 - Find The Mole - Welcome to Oakland Middle Harbor, the hub of major shipping operations as can be seen by the huge ships, cranes and semi-trailer trucks waiting for goods to haul (be careful). The Middle Harbor is also now the site of a 60,000sf wetland restoration project so enjoy the view and the large variety of waterfowl. Ride around the edge of this small park and you’ll come upon remnants of the “Mole”. Take a selfie with the Mole.
Stop #2 – Fishing pier at the end of the Middle Harbor.
Stop #3 – Original Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge (now a pier). Enjoy the views and the history of the Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge.
Stop #4 - Ruins of the Berkeley Pier
Stop #5 - Find a Cache - Welcome to Albany Bulb. Ride out the sandy paved pathway along the water's edge until it turns to gravel then go a bit further (uphill), take a right and head north. You’ll find me at the water's edge welcoming you with open arms! Look closely for an image related to the club, pull on the string and you;’ll find the cache. Open it, print your name and carefully leave it as you found it for the next rider. Take a selfie with your guest.
Stop #6 - Find the “Whirley”. Welcome to the Red Oak Victory Trail. On your way here you passed many monuments to Richmonds rich ship building history. You’ll find the Whirley near the aft of the Red Oak Victory. I’ll just be standing there waiting for you to take a selfie with me.
Stop #7 - Western Terminus of the Trans-Continental Railway.

GPC Route: ASSR Allegretto Alternative
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Come join us for a fun day on the bike - social distance guidelines will be observed, so please bring your mask...and please wear it, when we’re stopped and if/when we’re going into cafés and the like. Ride leader may be a little flexible on the route - for example, maybe we’ll head straight to Benicia for lunch instead of lunch in Martinez. We’ll play it by ear and leave it up to the group, but prepare to be flexible and of course give your opinion too. Looking forward to riding with you!
Bonus! Get credit for this month’s bay area bridges challenge!
Route: Follow original ASSR route to Castro Ranch Road. Follow Century North Loop to Crockett. Cross Zampa Bridge to Vallejo. Lake Herman Road, and return via Benicia Martinez to Alhambra Valley Road to Pig Farm Hill and back to Orinda BART.

ASSR Allegretto Alternative
Start Location:
Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot

Find out how when Bike East Bay presents opportunities to improve our cycling experience by influencing quick build projects, reimagining public safety by removing police from traffic enforcement and the vision zero planning projects currently ramping up in Contra Costa County.
