Meet at 8:00 am

GPC Challenge Ride: Parks & Recreation Single Ride with three clues to solve (see details below)

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends pod or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series in which you choose to participate on your own schedule within a calendar month. The series has something for everyone at every level of cycling. When you complete the series you will be entered into a raffle for any prizes. Please see "How It Works" at the bottom of the descriptions of the rides.

GPC Parks & Recreation challenge is a scenic but hilly ride with three clues to solve along the 29 mile route. You have to sign up to make it official but take the rest of November to complete it alone or with a few close friends. This ride is routed to and from the Rockridge BART station but feel free to start and end wherever you like, as long as all three clues are solved. The three clues are embedded in the Ride-with-GPS map but they are also listed on a google document at the link below if you’d prefer to print out and take them with you.

Be sure to join the GPC Strava club, and record the ride on your phone or bike computer. After you complete the ride and post it to Strava, rename it to “GPC Parks & Rec Challenge” and attach your selfies. Those that sign up, complete the route and solve the clues, as proven by the posted Strava ride with selfies, will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a newly designed club buff. The raffle winner will be announced sometime in December.

Clue #1 - Welcome to where Tunnel Road Meets Skyline Drive. Long before Hwy 24 was built I was the pathway through the hills as memorialized on this plaque. Look for an island on the left with a beautiful Oak tree. I’ll be sitting just below. Take a selfie with me.

Clue #2 – Welcome to Roberts Park. Look for the entrance at “10570” Skyline Drive. You’re not going for a swim but nearby you’ll find a “rocky” chair, fill up your water bottle before taking a selfie with the plaque commemorating "Tommy" Roberts.

Clue #3 – Dr. Gibbons welcomes you to Redwood Regional Park. You can find me world wide but long ago was native to just this area. Find the plaque paying homage to me “Salmo Iridia” near the fishway parking lot. Take a selfie with me.

Meet at 9:50 am for a 10:00 am start
GPC Route: Mount Diablo Clockwise Loop via Danville Peet's
Start Location: Walnut Creek BART
UPDATE:

The weather will be 36F at the top (forecast), so we will likely just go as high as the junction. Bring layers! Happy to do another summit attempt on a warmer day.

Inspired by our Bay Area Summits challenge*, we're doing a club ride up Mount Diablo! To keep things interesting, we'll make a loop, with a mix of paved roads and paved multi-use trails. Consider bringing an extra layer of clothing for the summit/descent.

Water and bathrooms at the ranger station/junction (Mile 13), and we'll stop there again on the way down (Mile 22) if there's no water at the summit (Mile 17.5). Short lunch is at Danville Peet's (Mile 32), with other quick lunch options nearby, such as Lunardi's, before the flat 8 miles back to the start.

Leader rides at a slower TM pace; average moving speed will likely be 12-13mph. We'll have many regroups to keep everyone together. COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced! Don't forget your buff or mask. If you need to contact the leader on the day of the ride, please call or text (not email).

Leader: Elizabeth Crocker     (510) 484-1060
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza

Join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). Cyclists of different paces are very welcome to join. South Park is closed to car traffic, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain.

NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels ride. Please contact ride leaders if there's unfavorable weather.

https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2742955390 (this route shows 3 ascents up South Park, we’ll only do 1-2 ascents. Thanks to Nick Umemoto for the route and inspiration!)

Ride will follow GPC Covid-19 protocol, including mandatory pre-registration for members. Please wear face coverings at the start/end and during all regroups.

GPC Route:
Mount Diablo Clockwise Loop via Danville Peet's
Start Location:
Walnut Creek BART

*If you have not yet registered for the challenge, do it today!
