GPC Route: Calaveras and Sierra
Start Location: West Dublin Pleasanton BART

The route listed above will be modified to: West Dublin/Pleasanton BA to Calaveras and back
I'll park in the Stoneridge Mall lot.
This route descends Sierra (as opposed to climbing) to get to our usual lunch spot. The first half of the ride will be comfortable but the Epic Weather App says temps will climb to mid-80s on the ride home, so bring your large water bottles for the ride back up Calaveras.

Meet at 8:30 am for a 8:30 am start
Mandatory pre-registration with max 5 riders
Come join for a challenging, all-day mixed terrain ride through the peninsula this Saturday (Labor Day weekend).
This route is inspired by a post (SF Peninsula Traverse) on Bikepacking.com. But rather than carry overnight gear, I've always wanted to do this as a long day ride. I've made a few modifications to trim that route to a single day effort. This is a beautiful route that visits many different ecotones (redwoods, beach, coastal chaparral, oak woodlands, urban jungle). It also samples a number of park in the Mid Peninsula Open Space District.
Route profile is 100 miles with 11k ft of climbing. Nearly half of the route is unpaved. Wide tires are strongly encouraged. A mountain bike probably would probably do well. Dirt sections include some singletrack. I expect this to take all day, maybe 11+ hours? Lights might not be a terrible idea. Pace listing (TM) is more representative of the effort rather than moving speed. This is will be an all day pace, I'm planning a consistent steady effort.
Route is below: (subject to some minor changes). There are a number of bailout spots and a few places to cut out dirt if conditions dictate (heat, fatigue, etc).
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40730004
This is not a no-drop ride, sorry. I'll do my best to keep a cohesive group. Come prepared (navigation, food, water, tools, spares, etc). If you have questions, contact me.
Weather: High pressure system is forecast with unseasonably warm conditions for Saturday. Expect high temperatures to exceed 90F.
Water/Food: Planned water stops: Half Moon Bay park (mi 25), store (mi 50), firestation (mi 66.5), trailhead (mi 84.7). Food/snacks at the market at mile 50 (La Honda/Skyline). I will also grab a meal before jumping on BART.
E-bikes are prohibited in the Mid Peninsula Open Space District.
BART is celebrating 50 years of service in September so fares are half price! Accordingly, this route is BART-2-BART. San Bruno to Berryessa stations. Masks are currently required on BART. I plan to catch the 7:34am train (car 2) from Rockridge (arriving San Bruno 8:24). Ride will leave from San Bruno BART at 08:30.
As always, email if you have questions. Thanks!

From Miller Creek and Lucas Valley via Nicasio and the Cheese Factory to Marshall and Point Reyes Station and back.
Riders can also cut off 20 total miles by starting in Nicasio instead of Marinwood. We should be rolling through there around 9:15AM. Be ready to roll at 9:15 if you are starting at Nicasio, and please let us know your plans as well so we can keep an eye out for you.

GPC Route: Bear Valley to Drakes Beach
Start Location: Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor Center
Pre-registration
Wednesday looks like the coolest day this week, but still hot most places. Let's do the coolest ride we can find, Bear Valley to Drake's Beach, and let's meet at 9:45 for a 10 AM departure. The route in the GPC library has diversions to North Beach and Pt Reyes Station (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37421990). Skipping both of these extensions makes a 34 mile straight out and back with ~1900' of climbing. My birthday is 9/5, and this is my birthday ride. Because I have had soo many birthdays, we don't want bonus miles, especially in the expected heat, so we plan to skip the extension to the Bovine (~2.5 mi round trip), although if we could get there by 1:30 (which we usually can't), it would be the best birthday party venue. Instead we hope to stop at the Inverness Park Market to forage for goodies. I hope at least some of you will join us there.
Please give me the birthday present of registering online in advance. thank you.

Ride With GPS Route
I'm trying out some new variants of rides I've done, so consider this to be a bit experimental. Strava estimates ~3.8k feet of elevation gain, much of that on dirt. 35cm+ tires recommend. While this route was designed with a gravel bike in mind, some sections I haven't tested so there could be a few short tricky parts.
There is no lunch stop, so bring your own food. There will be a few places to get water, but bringing two water bottles is recommended. E-Bikes are not permitted on East Bay Regional Parks trails.

GPC Route: Heather Farm Morgan Territory, Livorna Heights
Start Location: Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
Unfortunately, we have cancelled the ride for today. It's raining right now in Pleasant Hill and may not stop until after 10. Then the road down from Morgan Territory could be very slick. We will re-schedule in a couple of weeks
Morgan Territory should be dry and shady so not too hot. We'll eat lunch at the top of Morgan Territory. Lat 37.8188006, Long -121.7958974. Bring your lunch, or if you have to, you can buy something in Clayton. There's a Circle K at Pine Hollow and Ygnacio Valley and a store in the Clayton Town Center. Careful on the fast descent afterwards. Snack stop at Draegers in Blackhawk before returning via Diablo Road and Livorna Heights.
The ride start is about 1 1/2 miles from Pleasant Hill BART. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/1098258 will get you there. The ride leaders will be on the train leaving Rockridge at 9:17 and invite everyone who has easy access to BART to join us.

GPC Route: Rockville Winters loop
Start Location: Rockville Bike shop
Pre-registration
It looks like we can squeeze this ride in before the next heat wave, while Winters is warm, but not hot. We will ride a 66 mile loop up Pleasants Valley to Winters for lunch, then back via Lake Berryessa and Wooden Valley. All the climbing is bunched in the second half of the ride.
From the south, take Hwy 80 and take the Suisun Valley/Pittman Rd exit. From Oakland or east of the hills Hwy 680 to Hwy 80 is probably faster. Go left on Suisun Valley Rd. After about 1.7 mi go left on Rockville Rd. The bike store is on the left. Park all the way in the rear of the lot, not in front of any of the stores.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

NOTE that due to BART construction delays between South Hayward and Union City stations now scheduled for this weekend, we have revised the route. Here is the new ridewithgps link. Ride will now start from the South Hayward BART station. Check back later today (Friday) for the revised link. Plan to arrive at South Hayward on the train arriving at 9:12. Route will likely skip Calaveras Wall and head for Palomares Canyon and then on to Berkeley. 45 miles. Weather forecast for Castro Valley is 89.
Let's take advantage of the last weekend of 1/2 price BART fares by rolling from the Milpitas BART station all the way back to Berkeley and beyond. Lots of miles and hills between here and there, including the Calaveras Wall, Palomares Canyon, etc. We'll roll at a moderate TM pace -- not too slow, not too fast, juuuuust right. Brief lunch stop will be in Castro Valley, bring snacks to see you through to there, and of course two water bottles with your choice of liquids. The last time we did this ride the group headed off in multiple different directions once we hit Pinehurst, but leaders will ride to Sibley and then decide whether to head down to Rockridge or to take Grizzly Peak Blvd back to Berkeley and beyond. Route is here -- please download or print your own, leaders will not have them available for all at the start. Meet at 9:10, roll at 9:20ish -- plan on taking the BART train that arrives at Milpitas station at 9:06. Pre-registration is appreciated. Rain will cancel -- contact the leaders the night before if the weather forecast is iffy.

Thanks!

Novice Ride #6: Central Marin Redwoods and Pastries
Start Location:
San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Pre-registration
Tour the redwoods of central Marin county through Nicasio and have lunch at the Bovine Bakery on Highway 1. Return through Olema back to Nicasio and Lucas Valley. The 24-mile ride joins the 44 mile ride in Nicasio and loops back to Nicasio. There are hills, but we will ride them gently. Bring lunch or $ to buy. No drop. Helmets required. Rain cancels; if weather is dubious contact a ride leader.
— For the 44 mile ride, meet 10:00 a.m. across from the Marinwood Community Center: exit Hwy 101 at the Lucas Valley exit just north of San Rafael and head West on Lucas Valley Road. Make a right turn at Miller Creek Rd. and park on the street across from the community center.
— For the 24 mile ride, meet at 11:00 a.m. in Nicasio for an 11:15 departure. From Hwy 101, take the Lucas Valley Rd/Smith Ranch Rd Exit. Go 10 miles west to Nicasio Valley Road. Turn right and go 0.3 mile to a parking area with convenience store. You will pass the 44-mile bicycle riders on Lucas Valley, so please take extra care.

Ride with GPS link is here. Note: the link is correct, but the details for the route will be finalized. Watch for updates up till 9:00 p.m. on Sept 16
The route follows the old Pedro Mountain Road which is what used to be Hwy 1, before that was rerouted to Devil's Slide, before it was rerouted through the tunnels. The route climbs over the shoulder of Montara Mountain, and drops down to Montara. We follow multi use trails to Half Moon Bay for lunch, and return roughly the same way. Some parts of the route are off road, but it is not technically too difficult. It is quite rideable with 25 mm tires.

This ride is canceled due to rain. We will try again next month to do this Franklin Canyon-Carquinez Scenic ride.
Cooler climes have brought this ride back to this side of the ridge. Starting off at Pleasant Hill BART (parking available!), we'll get our climbs in on Franklin Canyon and Cummings Skyway. Bathroom and snack stop at mile 16 at the park before turning onto Pomona. After riding along Carquinez Scenic and enjoying delta views, we'll lunch at Luigi's in DT Martinez (mile 24). After lunch, we continue eastward for a bit before heading back south towards BART. Check out the RWGPS link for deets. Please note that we will leave as close to 9:50 as possible.
Weather update: Two websites--NOAA & Weather Channel--both report rain, somewhere between 50 and 90 percent on Sunday. It is supposed to start Saturday night. If the ride is canceled, will let you know by 7am Sunday at the latest.
