Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side

Please join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! Meet at the water fountain at Spruce/Grizzly Peak. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). UPDATE:

Stephen Chan outlined this Dirty Diablo route. It's shorter but has some epic climbs and a bit of hike a bike to make it an adventure leaning route! It starts on the other side of the Diablo starting in Clayton at the Grove.

Stephen's description:

Here's one proposal for a dirty adventure ride on Diablo. Start/end in Clayton (public restrooms/water at park and some stores/restaurants nearby). Shorter on mileage but lots of climbing. The ascent is via Mitchell Canyon which is steep but rideable (not Burma Rd). One singletrack section (10.9-11.9) has some technical bits. I threw in an out and back to N. Peak (mile 12-13.5); there is a very steep hike/bike section in there (aka adventure). The decent is a ripper.

If we have rain we may change but forecast seems clear for the next 10 days.

A new monthly Mixed Terrain adventure ride during the winter months with a rotating, rider driven, suite of routes in East Bay, Marin and the Peninsula. Anyone who is a regular participant can offer route suggestions. A few of our favorites may prime the pump for the first few months (e.g...Dirty Zoo [East Bay], Planet of the Apes [Peninsula], and Coastal [Marin]).

This ride will respect the trails and execute only when they are dry enough for riding without damage.

Plan will be to offer MTB and Gravel pace groups and no rider will be left behind.

Participants should be willing and prepared to do >5K climbing and 3-4 hours of ride time.

Leader: Jim O'Melia     (925) 262-3882

SUN FEB 6 4!/T/46 Willow Creek Road
Leader: Nikki Ellman     (510) 517-8647    text
Leader: Phil Morton     (510) 852-9663
Meet at 10:00 am
GPC Route: Sebastopol - Willow Creek
Start Location: Sebastopol - Ragle Rd/Covert Lane
Pre-registration closed. You can sign in at the start.

From Sebastopol head out to Occidental, and down the Russian River to Hwy 1. Right after crossing the river near Jenner we turn left and ride along the south side of the Russian River for a bit. There are one or two rough spots, but the gravel is hard packed and not hard to ride. After 4 miles there's a gate across the road, and it gets really peaceful for several miles. It's not technical, since it was once a paved road. You can ride it on 25 mm tires, and probably 23 mm tires will also work. Since the unpaved parts are decayed asphalt, it should be rideable unless there's a lot of heavy rain.

There are one or two really steep bits, but they're short, and it's not a great hardship to walk them. We come out on Coleman Valley Road and continue through Freestone. The route is in the club library at https://www.grizz.org/routes/detail.php?id=181, except that we take Moscow Road on the south side of the Russian River. For the exact route see https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37252403.

Moscow Road is closed to cars where the road has fallen away, but bikes can get through. Many roads in Sonoma County have been resurfaced, among them Occidental Road, Bohemian Highway, and the first part of Willow Creek road. It's a pleasure to ride them, which wasn't always the case.

The coffee shop in Duncan's Mills has limited offerings, and there's not much at Wild Flour either. You had best bring your own sustenance.

Please print or download your own map, or let me know if you need a printed version of the route.

WED FEB 9 2/LT/22 Wed Ride - Deb's Diversions
Leader: Mark Sapiro     (415) 515-8120    text
Leader: Chris Witt     (510) 548-5790
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469    text
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Mill Valley Safeway
Pre-registration

It's a ride and a birthday party.

We will meet at the Mill Valley Safeway (location link and times above)

Route information is at https://www.msapiro.net/rides/Bday/.

Parking in the store lot is inadvisable. Parking on nearby main streets is usually metered and scarce. Leaders suggest parking remotely in more distant residential neighborhoods or at the foot of Sycamore near the wastewater treatment plant, then pedalling to the Safeway. There is a public bathroom, appropriately, in the back of the wastewater treatment building, and more bathrooms adjacent to the Mill Valley - Public Safety Buildings

From the meeting location, we will pedal the Tiburon/Paradise Drive loop counterclockwise, which will put us on the bay side of the road for the segment which follows the bay shore and offers optimal viewing of the bay scenery. This ride isn't very long or very hilly, which is by design since the ride co-leaders, Mark and Chris, want to have plenty of time and energy at the end of the ride to host our ONE-HUNDRED-FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY PARTY at Mark's place, which is the endpoint of this ride. All Wed-Riders are invited to participate; the celebration will include a cake, beverages of diverse nature, and other comestibles, most of them delightfully unhealthy. Note that the endpoint/PartyCentral is up a very steep short hill on a very narrow street with no available auto parking. Attendees will be responsible for getting themselves up the hill to Mark's place, and back down again after the party, to return to their chosen mode of transport.

The party will be conducted mostly outside, on Mark's front and back decks and in his commodious driveway. Attendees are encouraged to follow responsible public health practices. Since the ride is short and followed immediately by a party, there is no designated lunch stop on this ride.

Please pre-register at the link above.

Greater than a 29% chance of rain per the NOAA website will cancel the ride.

No extended lunch stop planned (we have a game to watch!), so bring what you need or plan on grabbing something quick in Martinez.

Sebastopol - Willow Creek
Start Location:
Sebastopol - Ragle Rd/Covert Lane

Delta Birding
Start Location:
Isleton Main Street
Pre-registration

At the ride start is a public parking lot with a public restroom nearby. We may spend a significant amount of time on Staten Island Rd (where some may choose to start their ride). Lunch is at Cosumnes River Preserve. Many riders will bring their lunch, binoculars, maybe a bird book, and patience. There is also a Subway just after crossing under Interstate 5 at Thorton Rd near the Chevron station. Historic Locke and Mel's Mocha & Ice Cream at Walnut Grove are worthwhile side adventures. Twin Cities Road can have a nasty headwind and includes semi-trucks.

Here are a couple of bar charts for bird populations if you want to see how the bird populations change:

About the RWGPS route. The GPC route linked above as "Delta Birding" is the traditional route. One ride leader (Jim) is going to try something a little different and cross the bridge at Walnut Grove as described here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38552337

This route is the same as Delta Birding but includes turning into Locke.

Please preregister.

Rain cancels. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

Return down the coast and through the redwoods in Samuel P Taylor with a second food/drink stop at either Pt Reyes Station or Lagunitas (t.b.d.: I will explain day-of-ride). For the 62 mile version, meet us in in Nicasio -- be there, ready to ride, by 9:15. Pace: This ride is listed at M pace ... but to put that in perspective, it will be about the same pace as last Saturday's ASSR Allegretto (where the majority of riders rode at M pace).

South Park is closed to cars, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain. This is a great workout!
