SAT JAN 1 5!/TM/34 New Year's Day - Dirt Diablo
Leader: Stephen Chan
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:05 am start
Start Location: Walnut Creek BART
Mandatory pre-registration with max 8 riders

Ring in 2022 with a challenging adventure ride on Mt. Diablo. This route will take as much dirt as possible up and down the mountain.

The route will start and end at Walnut Creek BART. We'll begin with a warmup through Shell Ridge following the Briones-Diablo trail. Then the 'fun' starts with Burma Rd. The first part of this fireroad is exceptionally steep (~30%?) and probably will involve some hike-a-bike. We will rejoin the road at the Juniper Campground and take it to the summit.

Be warned that the descent won't be easy. We'll leave the pavement at Devil's elbow and take the North Peak trail which has some technical, rocky single track. Once to the Diablo saddle, we'll take some steep fireroads to Clayton. The route will end with a short bit in Lime Ridge and bike paths back to BART.

The proposed route is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38220188

Please be prepared for a full day on the bike. Although the mileage isn't great, our moving speed could be modest given the amount of steep, off-pavement terrain. Bring enough calories and water. I expect water to be available at the summit.

Please keep an eye on this listing for updates, especially weather related. I have no interest in being on the summit in poor weather conditions.

Happy new year!

Leader: Phil Morton     (510) 852-9663
Leader: Nikki Ellman     (510) 517-8647    text
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start   Rain Date: Sun Jan 2
GPC Route: Mt. Diablo from Pleasant Hill BART - Up South Gate, Down North Gate
Start Location: Pleasant Hill BART
Pre-registration closed. You can sign in at the start.

We can start the year with a solid and challenging ride. It is a tradition, and a way to be part of the regional cycling community.

Meet at Pleasant Hill BART. Take care not to join the other GPC ride starting at the same place at the same time. We'll take Iron Horse Trail to Newell and then ride through Alamo to get to Stone Valley Road. Then on to South Gate, with a regroup at the Junction and at the summit. Food stop after descending North Gate to Ygnacio, and continuing to the Ygnacio Plaza Shopping Center. Route is at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38225309.

This is a winter ride, and unless it's unseasonably warm, layers are a good idea.

The descent from the Summit can be cold, and putting additional layers on at the summit can be a cold experience. We recommend adding the extra layers at the lower parking lot where you are most likely out of the wind.

SUN JAN 2 3!/TM/83.7 [Rain Date] Cotati - Sweetwater Springs Loop
Leader: Arnim Polster     (415) 271-3440    text
Meet at 8:00 am for a 8:15 am start
Pre-registration closed. You can sign in at the start.
UPDATE:

Ride is ON for January 2nd!
Please dress warmly - it's been very cold here in the morning over the last few days, though it does warm up a bit from mid-morning on.
Also, be on the lookout for ice for the beginning of the ride, and exercise appropriate caution on shady stretches that could remain icy into mid-morning.
Lastly, plan is to finish well before dark but a mechanical or 2 could easily derail that plan, so please bring lights.
Bright flashing rear lights in any case, for stretches like River Road where you want to be as visible as possible

See the listing for Sun Dec 26. If that ride was rained out, we will try again today. Contact the ride leader if you aren't sure.

TUE JAN 4 5!/TM/10 Tuesday evening South Park repeats (repeats weekly)
Leader: Anne Schonfield
Leader: Elizabeth Crocker
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
Pre-registration

Please join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! Meet at the water fountain at Spruce/Grizzly Peak. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). South Park is closed to cars, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain. This is a great workout!
NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

UPDATE:

This is the actual route with the start/end in Woodside. We updated it today (1/7/2022) to feature more dirt along the coast and I emailed it late afternoon.

January edition of the Dirty Adventure Series is the most epic Planet of the Apes route. We'll meet at the CalTrans Woodside Park & Ride Lot at 9am for a 60 mile 6 hour adventure on the peninsula. Majority of this route is tarmac and while I suspect a road bike could work, the best steed for this ride is a gravel bike.

The main features on this route include Sweeney Ridge, Old San Pedro Mtn Rd and Purisima Creek Trail. We'll stop in Half Moon Bay for a snack.

For the start location, let's meet at the main entrance at Berryessa BART station (east side of station, facing Berryessa Station Way). There's a parking 1/2 block east of the main entrance, lots of parking available if you're going to drive. Text/call Anne with any questions: 510 851 4749.

We climbed Mt. Diablo on Jan. 1... let's add Mt. Hamilton to our climbs in January! Please join us for a ride up Mt. Hamilton from Berryessa BART station (out and back to Berryessa BART). The views should be spectacular with lots of green hills. Per MJ's route, restrooms and water are available halfway up the climb (Mile 14). We'll stop at the gate at the top of the climb (mile 25) for lunch/snacks, water (and possibly bathrooms). The Lick Observatory and snack bar are closed due to Covid, so bring your own food for snack/lunch for the stop at the top (no food available there). Then we'll descend 25 miles back to BART. Mt. Hamilton is a challenging ride, though longer and less steep than Mt. Diablo. Please join us!

Leader: Stephen Chan

Start Location:
Walnut Creek BART

Rockville Winters loop
Start Location:
Rockville Bike shop
Pre-registration

We will ride a 66 mile loop up to Winters for lunch and back via Lake Berryessa and Wooden Valley. All the climbing is bunched in the second half of the ride. Pleasants Valley will be pleasantly green and Lake Berryessa will have some water in it.

From the south, take Hwy 80 and take the Suisun Valley/Pittman Rd exit. From Oakland or east of the hills Hwy 680 to Hwy 80 is probably faster. Go left on Suisun Valley Rd. After about 1.7 mi go left on Rockville Rd. The bike store is on the left. Park all the way in the rear of the lot, not in front of any of the stores.

We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time, you may have to chase. Faster riders are welcome as long as you don't mind waiting at regroups. Faster riders should also feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
