Ride Schedule for January 2023
Leader: Steven Payne (510) 995-6327 text
Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:40 am start
Mandatory pre-registration
Ride canceled. The roads up Mount Diablo are all closed due to rocks and mud on the road. Details here https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517
The traditional GPC Mt Diablo route for the New Years Day tradition of climbing our local mound -- we'll go out on the bike path, up the South entrance, and come down through North Gate. There are scores of local riders on the mountain, so it is a great day to climb it. We'll start and end at Calicraft Brewery to wet our lips with a well deserved post ride refreshment -- there is also a food truck. I've listed this as a TM ride, but would welcome others who wish to lead other pace groups. Just let me know and I'll add you as co-leaders.
There is plenty of street parking at the start location: 2700 Mitchell Dr, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 or just park in the large lots that serves the brewery (but check the signs, I am not sure whether it is permissible to leave your car there when not at the brewery, which opens at 12 noon).
For those new to riding Mount Diablo -- please be sure to bring at a minimum an extra pair of warm gloves that will go over your cycling gloves, a warm jacket, and even a face covering. The descent can be very cold given the long downhill and the colder weather at altitude.

Meet at 9:30 am for a 9:45 am start
Start Location: Pleasant Hill BART
Pre-registration
This ride is cancelled. North and South Gate roads are closed due to rain mud slides on December 31 and January 1.
[RWGPS route] Ring in the new year with the traditional NYD ride up Mount Diablo! Note that this is a solidly T-pace ride. I will still be on my commuter bike, and T-pace is about all your ride leader can do on this bike. 😅 There will be plenty of regroups to keep us together while we're off the mountain.
Bring all the food you'll need to get up the mountain and all the layers (extra gloves, socks, toe covers, neck buff, jacket, pants, whatever) to get you down the mountain. Restrooms and water at the junction (Mile 18.7). Food and drinks at Calicraft Brewing Company (Mile 37.4), but if you prefer to skip that, it's just a 2.5-mile ride on bike trails back to BART. Restrooms and water if needed at Livorna Park (Mile 6.5), but I'd prefer to skip that.
NOTE 1: There is a separate TM-pace ride that is starting at Calicraft at the same time. We'll meet with that group at the intersection of Contra Costa Trail & Cherry Lane. If you want to push yourself, feel free to ride with the TM group for as long as you want and then fall back with this T group if needed.
NOTE 2: This ride is scheduled to accommodate people arriving on the Antioch-bound BART train that arrives at Pleasant Hill BART at 9:34am.
NOTE 3: You don't have to go all the way to the top. From the junction (Mile 18.7), you can save yourself nine miles and 1650 feet by continuing on to North Gate instead of doing the out-and-back to the summit. If you skip the summit, you will not have a ride leader, and you will have to self-navigate or find a buddy to get back to the Pleasant Hill BART.

Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start
GPC Route: Rockville Winters loop
Start Location: Rockville Bike shop
Pre-registration
Norm and I are leading rolling New Year's Day ride, meeting at 9:45 for a 10:00 departure. The start is at Rockville Bikes, and please park way in the back of the lot, not in front of the stores. If the lot looks full and stores are open please consider parking nearby.
The first half of the ride is flat, but often windy as we travel to Winters for lunch, and then return via hilly, but scenic roads to Rockville.
There will be frequent regroups to keep everyone together.
If you need to reach us on the day of the event please text me.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth and Norm

New Year's Revolutions (NYR) rides are designed for people who are newer to cycling or who have been off their bikes for a bit. These rides are generally shorter and at an easier pace (LT = 9-10 MPH average on hilly rides / 11-12 MPH on flat rides). These rides are also no-drop, so you don't have to worry about being left behind!
This Warmup ride tours very scenic and very flat Alameda - cross a drawbridge, pass Victorian houses, ride through an old Naval base, right next to an aircraft carrier to spectacular views of downtown SF, along the waterfront, make a quick stop at Highwire Coffee Roasters, and return to Fruitvale BART.

Meet at 9:30 am
Today's ride is cancelled due to almost certain rain.
This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. This listing will be updated when the route and leader have been determined, usually by Monday evening. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.
There is often a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

This ride is cancelled this week (January 5) due to weather and health issues. Hope to see you next week!
Please join us for a weekly Thursday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to the water fountain at Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). South Park is closed to cars, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great workout!
NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

Ride is ON. Riders starting with Jess at Miller Creek should be aware of possible ice patches on some roads -- descend and corner with care! It looks like the bakery in Tomales is still there, and hopefully we will arrive in time for morning treats. If not, the reviews for the pizza are good. Ride to Eat, Eat to Ride.
Our East Bay riding is limited due to the road damage caused by the recent rains. So let's head to Marin in search of sunshine and dry roads. This ride is a classic, featuring the steep climb up Wilson Hill Rd, the ever-beautiful Chileno Valley Road, a well-timed lunch/snack stop in Tomales, the picturesque roll down Highway 1 to Pt Reyes Station for late-ride coffee and treats, and a short roll back to Nicasio from there. Bring snacks, lunch, or $$ to buy, and two water bottles to see you through to Tomales, where there may no longer be that great bakery. TM pace. Any chance of rain cancels, but for now the forecast is for sunny skies and cold temperatures, so dress accordingly. Please download the route to your preferred navigation device; leader will not provide printed cue sheets. Those wanting 20 more miles (78 total!) should meet Jess at Miller Creek at 9:00 and be prepared to roll by 9:15 in order to meet the group in Nicasio. Steph will meet in Nicasio at 10:00, and roll promptly at 10:15. Check the website for any late-breaking weather or road updates. Let's ride!

[RWGPS route] Last weekend, we had a metric loop in Marin, and this time, we'll have another! Note, however, that there are no bakery stops, and the pace this time will be T (not TM). Restroom stop in Nicasio at Mile 25, lunch at a deli in Lagunitas at Mile 40. There will be lots of regroups to keep us together, but these will be short because I want to keep the group moving (still at a T pace) and get us home well before sunset. Hoping to finish the ride by 3:30pm. Bring layers; looks like will be cool and overcast/cloudy.

This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.

Join us for New Year's Revolutions (NYR)* ride #5! This is the hilliest ride of the series, with the first 7 miles being entirely uphill. We will take it easy and stop to rest as needed. RWGPS Route
If riders are interested, we can stop for coffee or tea in Montclair.
*2023 New Year's Revolutions (NYR) rides! The NYR rides are designed for people who are newer to cycling or who have been off their bikes for a bit and want to get back into riding - non-members welcome! These rides are generally shorter and at an easier pace (LT = 9-10 MPH average on hilly rides / 11-12 MPH on flat rides). These rides are also no-drop, so you don't have to worry about being left behind.
