Meet at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Aquatic Park Playground

Join us on our June Full Moon Ride along the coast of the Berkeley, and Richmond Marinas. According to ancient beliefs “the highest energy occurs at the Full Moon, and this is the most powerful time for magical workings” … we would like to use this energy, as we ride our bicycles along the coast, as a tool to materialize our most secret desires. The moonrise will be at 3:30pm, and if it is a clear day we will be to see the moon slowly emerging on the horizon. A fresh, savory meal will be awaiting for us at Luca Cucina Italiana, 2057 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, 510.649.9718, where we will immerse ourselves in a rich tapestry of aromas, and flavors; with a glass of red wine, will have an oblation for Selene, the Moon Goddess to show her our gratitude, and a toast for all the Full Moon Lovers; with this in mind some of the riders may bring wine to share. Please, let us know if you will be dining with us, thus we can let the restaurant know. Bring the bike that it is going to make you feel more at ease. Dress warm, wear bright colors, and BRING GOOD LIGHTS … We will meet at Aquatic Park, in Berkeley, at the feet of the pedestrian bridge, intersection of Bolivar Dr. and Addison St. We will ride as a Group.. If the weather is dubious please check the listing for a weather update the night before or call the leaders. We are looking forward to seeing you!

SUN JUN 11 4/T/53 miles / 4700 feet Apes on wheels
Leader: Craig Hicks     (510) 693-3912
Leader: Mary Ann Jawili     (415) 935-3113
Meet at 8:55 am for a 9:00 am start
Start Location: Daly City BART

Starting from Daly City BART, head down the coast taking the legendary "Planet of the Apes Road" (a.k.a. Old San Pedro Road) a deserted old mountain road from Linda Mar to Montara/Moss Beach (History: Wikipedia description).  By this route the shoulderless winding heavily trafficed part of Rt 1 is avoided, along with Devil's Slide - for better or worse.  After that a scenic ride down the good shoulder on Rt 1, or parallel side roads where appropriate, until heading up Tunitas Creek Road.  Tunitas Creek Road is lightly travelled scenic road through towering magnificent redwoods.  Then we cross Skyline and head down Kings Mountain Rd until reentering civilization.  From there, just a few short miles to the goal at Redwood Caltrans station. Map -  https://www.strava.com/routes/8850265 - subject to revision.

Note: Planet of the Apes Road includes a dozen or so places where it is necessary to dismount and walk (unless you have an MTB).  This makes MTB style recessed cleats, or ordinary shoes, much more comfortable than road cleats - of course your pedals must match.  Furthermore, larger tires at lower pressure are more comfortable.  But we won't be going fast so at least you don't have to worry about falling over the edge of the cliff.  I will be on a road tandem with 32mm tires inflated to ~60 psi for the abandoned road part. Other riders have ridden without dismounting even using 25, 23, or even 20 mm tires. You may find widers tires to be more comfortable, however.

  • We may skip winding trails (e.g. between Moss Beach and HMB) and do more straightforward roads if we need to "pick up the pace".
  • There will be a casual lunch stop at HMB, about halfway through the ride.

SAT JUN 17 4/T/80 Birthday Ride Redux
Leader: Melissa Kasnitz     (415) 254-4962
Meet at 8:15 am for a 8:30 am start
Start Location: Domingo Peet's

My birthday ride in April was rained out (well, mostly - I went myself, but everyone else was sane enough to stay away), so I'm trying again, and hoping for better weather and some company this time.  The ride is set up to be about 50 miles + 50 km, with multiple options to bail out or join midway. We'll meet at Domingo Peets, then take Tunnel, Skyline & Lake Chabot to Castro Valley (avoiding the closure on Redwood).  After a stop in Castro Valley, we'll head over the Dublin Grade and up the Iron Horse Trail to Pleasant Hill, with another stop in Danville.  From there, it's over the hills and back to Berkeley, including Pig Farm, the Bears and Wildcat.  If you want to join mid-way, the easiest option is Castro Valley since we can have a decent estimate of timing at that point.  But other points would work too - let me know what you're thinking and we can make a plan.

Since this is a (make up) birthday ride, I'm offering to host anyone who comes along for coffee, beer, or other refreshment of choice on Solano Avenue at the end of the ride.  Otherwise, the closest BART station once we come out of the hills is North Berkeley.

SAT JUN 17 3/T/28 3rd Saturday Ride
Leader: Jim O'Melia     (925) 262-3882
Leader: Steve Foster
Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start

Ride repeats on the Third Saturday of each month.

Ride out to Pinole, along San Pablo Dam Road and Pinole Valley Road.  Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Planned destination is the Bear Claw Cafe, a quaint, old-timey family bakery in downtown Pinole, with a visual historical treat in the alcove next to the building. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Europa Hof-Brau, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14580950 Check out Social Biker Group on Facebook. SAT JUN 24 4!/TM/130 Mt Hamilton AND Mt Diablo in a day!
Leader: Khee-Gan Lee     (609) 356-8443
Meet at 7:15 am
Optional pre-registration for members
UPDATE:

There is a possible finish at Dublin/Pleasanton BART which leads to a 90mile/7200' ride, and anyone who is interested in this shorter version is very welcome to join!

Please RSVP so I know how many cue sheets to print, or pre-register.

The new Warm Springs BART station now opens a new possibility for the stout of heart (and legs): Linking together Mt Hamilton and Mt Diablo without doing a double century or car shuttle. We begin from Warm Springs and warm up via Evans/Piedmont Rd before riding up Mt Hamilton Rd. After a brief break at the summit, we will go down San Antonio Valley Rd and stop for lunch at the Junction Cafe before moving North on Mines Rd towards Livermore. We will then roll through Dublin, San Ramon, and Danville before steeling ourselves at the bottom of the Mt Diablo to go up the South Gate Road. At the summit, walking your bike up the infamous last 100 yards will be forgiven! We will then make the final descent down North Gate and finish the ride at Pleasant Hill BART.

We will do this ride near the summer solstice to maximize the amount of sunlight. The climbing will be done at T/TM pace, but over the downhill/flat 70 miles between the Mt Hamilton summit and Danville we will aim to move faster in a paceline to protect the slower riders. Needless to say, this ride is for experienced riders only, with at least a couple of centuries under their belt this season, but the long daylight hours makes this distance feasible for the determined TM rider. The ! ride rating reflects the fact that nearly all the climbing is in two discrete chunks, but almost everything is below 10% gradient (except for the final bit on Diablo).

The first 45 miles are the most isolated in terms of food options until we get to Junction Cafe (mile 45), although there will be water refills at Grant State Park (mile 20) and Lick Observatory (mile 30). There will then be a quick stop in Livermore (mile 80) before a sit-down cafe break at Danville (mile 100) prior to the final assault on Diablo.

Meet at Warm Springs BART at 7:15am. Lights are required as there's a possibility that the final stretch after the Diablo descent will be after 8:33pm sunset, but leader will keep track of the pace and truncate the ride in order to finish before dark.
