Ride Schedule for January 2026
Leader: Mark Nienberg (510) 812-9312 text
Meet at 9:30 am
I suggest we join the traditional club ride up Mt Diablo this week. Register on that ride. See you there!
This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. This listing will be updated when the route and leader have been determined, usually by Monday evening. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

30 total miles out 'n back to summit; regroup at the Junction, same big hill. You will never forget if you break through the fog (happened one NY day before the junction) and encounter 70 degrees at the summit

Ride on Jan 1 canceled due to rain. Hope to see you next week!
Please join us for the weekly South Park repeats ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually two times is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to stay in shape over the winter!
NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

If you missed New Year's Day Diablo, don't despair! Weather forecast this next weekend is looking very good, with lots of sun, low wind and mild temperatures. And with recent rains, Diablo and surrounding hills will be very green.
Starting at Lafayette BART, we will head to Athenian School for a brief stretch break before climbing up Diablo via South Gate. We will descend via North Gate. If you only want to do Diablo and skip Morgan Territory, you can head to Pleasant Hill or Walnut Creek BART. Otherwise, continue on to Clayton for lunch before climbing Morgan Territory.
2nd refuel stop at Draeger's Market in Blackhawk. We will wait for everyone at the top of Diablo and Morgan Territory climbs. Just in the interest of time, there will be minimal stops besides those already mentioned.

Listed as M, but also suitable for faster TM paced riders. Out and back route, and lots of options to ride other GPC riders as we will piggy back on Stephanie's 'Favorite Ride Part 1'. GPC Route: Bear Valley to Drakes Beach
Start Location: Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor Center
Pre-registration
Join me on one of my favorite rides, from the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Pt Reyes out to Drakes Beach. Winter is actually a great time to do this ride, since the fog will be out and the temperature is predicted to be surprisingly mild. Two tough hills during the ride - the climb out of Inverness to get into the park, and then the steep climb back up from the beach after lunch, as well as some stair-step rollers throughout the park. Lunch will be at Drakes Beach, where the visitor center has bathrooms, water, and coffee, tea and snacks (bring a credit card, they don't take cash). It's best to bring lunch, but those inclined can stop to pick up a sandwich at the gourmet deli in Inverness Park, or at the decidedly non-gourmet little place in Inverness. Leader rides a TM pace, but since this is an out-and-back, all paces are welcome for those comfortable navigating the route. Anyone wanting extra miles is free to get in an additional 17 miles by starting at 9:15 from Nicasio and meeting us in Bear Valley. Meet Bear Valley Visitors Center at 10:00, ride out 10:15. Rain, which is not in the forecast, would cancel -- check the website for updates if in doubt.

This month's ride includes a ferry. But first: Oakland hills.
From Rockridge, we'll wend through Berkeley via familiar streets like Russell, Milvia, Virginia, and Spruce. Then it's onto to Grizzly Peak and Skyline. Stop at Sibley for a potty break if necessary. Continue along Skyline to Shepherd Canyon, where we will carefully descend to Mountain Boulevard and Park, and pick up lunch and snacks at Rocky's Market. Go through Oakmore, Fruitvale, and into San Antonio to Oakland's Embarcadero.
Once in Alameda, we'll check out the bike path along Clement and make our way to the Oakland-Alameda Water Shuttle. We'll eat lunch at the park that's right at the shuttle landing. (Ferry comes every 20-30 minutes.) Back at Oakland/Jack London, we'll make our way back to Rockridge via Adeline and 55th and the neighborhood streets.

With this fabulous spring-break weather in mid-January, let's ride to Livermore and eat lunch! The highlight is many miles of rolling green countryside. You have several choices of route length.
-- Start at Spruce & Grizzly in Berkeley: Meet and roll promptly at 07:55. Total 93 miles round trip.
-- Start at Orinda Bart. Meet ready to ride at 08:30; roll promptly at 08:35. Total 77 mi round trip.
-- Or start at Orinda and finish at Lafayette Bart: Total 70 mi.
For all the above, use https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53763843
-- A shorter version still: Start at Orinda Bart as above; from Livermore return to Pleasanton; finish at Dublin/Pleasanton Bart. Total 49mi. This is a leaderless option. Use https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53764098.
For lunch itself, we have some choices -- a taqueria, or a plaza with Starbucks & more. We'll discuss en route and make a group decision.

GPC Route: China Camp from Point Richmond
Start Location: Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline
RIDE IS CANCELLED!!!! The Richmond Bridge is closed on Martin Luther King Day, making this ride impossible to do. Very sorry to not be able to get out to China Camp on the holiday. Please check the website and consider going on Mark A's Lunch in Livermore ride instead.
I don't really call this one of my favorite rides, but it is a local favorite because it's close by, it only takes a few hours to do, and it gets you out by the water and through the rolling hills of China Camp. NOTE: Significant changes will be made to the route, including a cut-through immediately after the Richmond Bridge which gets us out to the park quicker (and easier) and which will involve a bit of riding on the dirt along the water (very doable on all bikes, no need to have gravel tires). One more significant change: I've listed the start time as 9:00, but that will be 9:00 from El Cerrito Plaza BART, where the ride leader will start and show people how to cut through the neighborhood over to Carlson, and then out to the Bay Trail before hitting the streets of Pt Richmond. Those wishing to start at Miller/Knox should be there around 9:30, ready to roll around 9:45. The ride is actually more like 1500 feet; RWGPS does not have elevation data for the RSR bridge, and of course if you start from El Cerrito Plaza BART, the distance will be more like 44 miles. No lunch break planned until we get back to Pt Richmond, where the little tacqueria near the train tracks has good drinks and food for those that want it. Restrooms at MIller Knox, and then out along the road in China Camp. Bring what you need and come enjoy riding in the warm sunshine in the middle of January. Rain would cancel, but it's supposed to be a beautiful day.

There may be mud on wildcat gorge trail. I'm assuming it's been dry enough recently we should be okay. We'll be descending tower trail again, but it's easy to skip if you don't like steep and rocky. Potential for food and drink after depending on time and interest.

GPC Route: Drake's Beach from Marinwood
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Pre-registration
There are a lot of elephant seals with pups on the beach at the moment. Let's go see!
We'll ride through Nicasio and Olema on our way to Drakes beach in Point Reyes National Seashore. Pick up lunch at the Inverness Park Market on the way and take it with us to the beach. Order ahead if you like. We return through Pt. Reyes Station.
Shorten the ride by 20 miles by starting in Nicasio. We should roll through there at about 10:15. Pre-registration is appreciated.
There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We will start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time, you may have to chase. You can probably catch us in Nicasio or Inverness Park.

Meet at 8:45 am for a 9:00 am start
Start Location: San Bruno BART
Pre-registration
Leisurely but challenging ride from the peninsula to the coast and back. Hopefully there will be clear skies, but it's always possible fog will take over on the coast. Several highlights: Sweeney Ridge, San Pedro Mountain (AKA Planet of the Apes), Gray Whale Cove Trail, Coastal Trail, Purisima Creek Trail. About a third of this ride is unpaved. It'll be more comfortable with wider tires (35 mm+) but it is entirely doable on a road bike if you're willing to deal with some bumpiness. Bring spare tube and flat-fixing tools. We'll be taking Caltrain, so be prepared with Clipper Card. Also bring enough water to last about 3 hours as there are very few potential water options after lunch.
Part 1: From San Bruno BART, start immediately climbing up Sneath Lane. This will gradually get steeper and eventually turn into Sneath Lane Trail (paved). We will continue until reaching the top of Sweeney Ridge. Loop around Sweeney Ridge and down Bacquiano Trail-this is really the only somewhat technical descent (narrow and windy dirt).
Part 2: Next challenge is San Pedro Mountain Road, formerly open to cars but maintenance lapsed and now it's a an eroded semi-maintained hiking/biking trail. There are a few rocky sections and a couple of sandy areas on the descent so be careful. Optional bathroom stop before looping out to Highway 1 on Gray Whale Cove Trail.
Part 3: Most of the next 10 miles are paved, a couple miles on Highway 1 before taking side roads and trails to Half Moon Bay. Lunch in Half Moon Bay-there are a few nearby options plus Starbucks. This is about the halfway point, but also the last real water and full bathroom until Woodside. If for whatever reason you're not feeling up to the rest of the ride, this is also the last real bail opportunity.
Part 4: From Half Moon Bay, we'll take the Coastal Trail to the end (very scenic, mostly unpaved route, secluded from traffic and right near the ocean), very briefly go onto Highway 1, and ultimately take Purisima Creek Road to Purisima Creek Trail, a fairly steep but well graded dirt climb. Then it's just descending into Woodside and Redwood City to Caltrain. If you want to go all the way to BART, you can take Cañada Road to Sawyer Camp Trail but that's on your own. Caltrain runs every half hour, and there is a discounted transfer between Caltrain and BART. If you end up driving to the start, San Bruno Caltrain is under a mile from San Bruno BART.

Notes for the cue sheet: Mile 9.1-Regroup at Fairfax Police Station/Town Hall. Restrooms/water. (or some may stop at the coffee shop at the Bolinas Road intersection). Mile 19.2 Informal regroup at Bolinas Road/Ridgecrest intersection, Mile ~22.5 Regroup, Lunch, hidden picnic tables west of the road. Mile 23-Turn left for optional trip to the summit, also porta-potties. Mile 30.9 Turn right on Miller, go one block and cross the street to reach the Mill Valley Swirl, at 417 Miller.

We'll look out for more GPC riders once we pass through Olema who started at Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor Center. We'll also stop in Inverness to pick up sandwiches, before heading out to Drake's Beach and then back via Point Reyes.
GPC Route:
Bear Valley to Drakes Beach
Start Location:
Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor Center

GPC Route:
China Camp from Point Richmond
Start Location:
Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline

Petaluma to Tomales
Start Location:
Petaluma - Walnut Park
Pre-registration
Help those of us born in January celebrate our birthdays! - Nikki, Glen Olson, Wallace Wong, Chris Witt, and in absentia, Debbie Frederick, Linda Karns, Lenore Gunst and Frank Valentini. The hills should be brilliantly green after all the rain. From Walnut Park (So. Petaluma Blvd. and D St.) in Petaluma, ride a loop to Tomales. Lunch and birthday treats will be at the public park in Tomales. The deli has closed and the space has been taken over by the bakery, which is closed on Wednesday, so you will need to bring your lunch. The ride finishes with a short, steep and very scenic path through Helen Putnam Regional Park back to Petaluma. You can avoid this last hill by turning right on Western Ave. and following the second route sheet below. The morning will start out cool, 49, and the high will be 61, so dress accordingly. Please pre-register and print out or download the route sheets.

This weeks route is a repeat from last month. This ride is listed as TM now but the pace hasn't changed. Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. Expect some steep and rocky sections. There may be mud on wildcat gorge trail. I'm assuming it's been dry enough recently we should be okay. We'll be descending tower trail again, but it's easy to skip if you don't like steep and rocky. Potential for food and drink after depending on time and interest.

Mill Valley has the Mill Valley Swirl, frozen yogurt and ice cream made with organic dairy products from Strauss. We hope some of you will check it out.
The route is here, the summit is not on the cue sheet; the out and back adds ~8 miles and ~800 feet climbing.
Bring lunch, and substantial snacks since lunch is at ~22 miles.
Be prepared for warm temps and fog incursions—wear layers, and don’t leave home without your windbreaker.
