This ride will be cancelled unless at least 3 pre-register. Print your own queue sheet; note that at mile 9.9 we MAY, depending on rider interest, try going through community of Diablo via bike path (not Diablo Road), then L on Calle Arroyo to Alameda Diablo and the hole in the fence to reach Mt Diablo Scenic Blvd.

SAT JAN 18 3/M/102 * Marinwood Marshall Loop featuring (hopefully) newborn lambs on Marshall/Petaluma road
Leader: Arnim Polster     (415) 271-3440
Meet at 7:45 am for a 8:00 am start   Rain Date: Sat Jan 25
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center

A beautiful loop through Western Marin and Southern Sonoma. We'll ride out to Marshall on the Petaluma/Marshall road, along which we will hopefully be treated to some newborn lamb sightings at several spots along the way. Then north through Tomales (brief stop if needed) to Valley Ford (mile 47) for lunch. Thence on to Petaluma for further refueling at the Lagunitas Brewery (mile 70), where, with luck, we'll still be able to get some Willitized Coffee Stout to fuel our return. As much of the ride is in Sonoma on Sonoma-quality roads, I recommend a setup with wider tires if possible. Also, though I don't plan on finishing after dark, please bring decent lights - all it would take, this time of year, is one time-consuming mechanical. RSVP or, better yet, pre-registration appreciated.

SAT JAN 18 2/T/28 * Orinda to Pinole 3rd Saturday Ride

SAT JAN 18 2/T/28 Mama O'Melia's Third Saturday Ride (repeats monthly)
Leader: Dean Lobovits     (510) 701-6784
Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot

Ride out to Pinole, along San Pablo Dam Road and Pinole Valley Road.  Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Planned destination is the Bear Claw Cafe, a quaint, old-timey family bakery in downtown Pinole, with a visual historical treat in the alcove next to the building. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Europa Hof-Brau, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14580950. Check out Social Biker Group on Facebook. Join free.

SAT JAN 18 1/LT/20 * Bike and Bird Alameda Creek to Coyote Hills Regional Park
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Union City BART

Meet at the Union City BART station by the ticket machines at 10:00 a.m. ready to ride (Leaders plan to be on train arriving at 9:53). We'll cycle 15-20 mostly flat miles from Union City BART, along Alameda Creek, and into Coyote Hills Regional Park, looking for ducks and shorebirds, as well as raptors and passerines. The approximate route is here https://ridewithgps.com/routes/18593834.

Bring binoculars and water, and wear layers. Helmets are required. Bring snacks and lunch - many birding stops make it long day with a late lunch and no food available for purchase. Restrooms are located at the BART station, at a staging area along the creek, and at the Coyote Hills Visitor Center, where we will eat lunch. This birding ride is co-listed with Golden Gate Audubon with Cathy Bleier as birding co-leader. Chris Witt may also be assisting as scope sherpa.

Rain Cancels. If the weather is questionable, send your e-mail address to Pat, pjgreene@sonic.net the night before the ride to receive news on the status of the ride.

MON JAN 20 4/TM/40 * MLK Day on the Carquinez Scenic Drive -- Pinole to Martinez
Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
GPC Route: Pinole to Martinez via Alhambra Valley
Start Location: Pinole - Park

Shamelessly borrowing from JAZ, who was kind enough to submit this into the GPC route database, we will enjoy the MLK Day holiday on a lollipop route from Pinole Park to Martinez via Alhambra Valley. Over Pig Farm, then Franklin Canyon to Cummings Skyway and down Crockett Blvd to an optional stop in Crockett Hills Park (restrooms and water). Then it's on to Carquinez Scenic Drive and the George Miller Trail to Martinez where we'll regroup, refuel and coffee-up at the Starbucks plaza (other options available for those opposed to large corporate entities). Return via Alhambra Valley. 20% chance of rain or more will cancel, call the leader by 9:00 a.m. if in doubt. Hardy souls wanting more miles can start anywhere they like (Orinda BART, junction of Wildcat and SPDR?), but be aware that it's longer to the park than you may think. Leader rides a TM pace, but everyone comfortable at following a cue sheet or the ridewithgps cues is welcome.

SAT JAN 25 5!/M/70 to 103 * Double Summit of Mt Umunhum and Mt Hamilton
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859
Meet at 8:00 am for a 8:15 am start   Rain Date: Sun Jan 26
Start Location: Walmart Neighborhood Market
Optional pre-registration for members

Beautiful but very difficult ride from East San Jose to Mt Umunhum and back with second summit of Mt Hamilton. Total distance is 103 miles with over 12.5k of climbing. Those wanting something less can skip Mt Hamilton which ends at about 70 miles and 7k of climbs. Here is the route on RideWithGPS.

Meet at the Walmart Neighborhood Market rear parking lot. The Market has a bathroom food and drink for last minute needs. We'll ride through a beautiful reserve before dropping down to cross Hwy 101 towards Almaden. A brief stop at mile 30 to fill up with water as the last 10-12 miles up Mt Umunhum has none. Umunhum is the 3rd tallest peak in the Bay Area so expect a long steep climb while enjoying the view.

We'll Gather the troops at the summit, check out the restored Ohlone Indian site, and head back to East San Jose. We'll take another break near the starting point (lots of choices) and gather ourselves for the short but steep climb on Quimby Road to get to Mt Hamilton Road for the 12 miles to the summit.

Bring lights as it might get dark on the final descent.

Leader: Stephanie Clarke     (510) 423-1873
Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:05 am start
Start Location: West Dublin Pleasanton BART

Shamelessly borrowing from Steve Tracy who led this ride back in November, we'll do it again because it truly is a great ride.  Out Foothill and Calaveras roads to the far side of the reservoir and turn back before the drop towards Milpitas (or you could drop down the wall and then come back up for some hardcore points!). Food stop on the way back in Sunol, either at the mini-store or at the very nice lunch place. Meet in the Stoneridge Mall parking lot just south of the BART station. Second to last stop on BART, not the last station. Similar to route ID 80 except start location and route through Pleasanton.  There was a GPS route created for Steve's ride, so feel free to look for that wherever one finds such things.  Leader will also have written cue sheets.  20% or greater chance of rain cancels; call the leader by 8:30 if in doubt.  Otherwise time your arrival so that we can roll as soon as the BART riders arrive.  Pre-ride bathrooms available in the BART station or at the Stoneridge Mall.
