Leader: Thomas Fraser     (954) 290-3903
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859
Meet at 8:00 am

A Few Epic Climbs Series: Complete riding 1 of the 2 rides; NOTE: Each ride includes two (2) Epic Climbs.

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends pod or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series on your own schedule within a calendar month. Complete the minimum rides to be entered into the raffle for a custom buff and each climb completed will be tallied for the annual award of a patch or the rights to purchase the custom Jersey.

Please see "How It Works" at the bottom of the descriptions of the rides.

As an added incentive we are taking the monthly Challenge Rides to the next level by offering a new GPC Climbers Jersey. The design of the new jersey is in progress but will be based upon the Matt McHugh jersey design. You'll earn the right to purchase this beautiful and unique jersey if you complete 30 of the 50 Epic Series climbing rides by year's end. Custom patches will also be developed to signify 30, 40 or all 50 climbs have been accomplished. Don't wait, get started with the epic posted series rides. Any of the epic series rides you completed in November & January will count towards the 2021 annual goal of 30 out of 50. You can also ride any of these 50 Epic Series rides in any order you prefer, please remember to record & send them to ChallengeRides@grizz.org for confirmation & accounting towards your annual goal.

Quimby and Metcalf.

The ride starts in South East San Jose at the Walmart Market parking lot where bathrooms and food are available. The Quimby climbs is a 3 mile 1700 foot grind starting 1.5 miles from the parking lot. Riders will find Quimby is good to do with fresh legs in the cool morning air and rewards with spectacular views of the South Bay. From there its an exhilarating decent back to Alum Rock. Lots of spots to refuel and hydrate before turning onto the Coyote Creek Bike Path just past Hwy 101. It’s twisty and turny but the path is in great shape and pleasant change from the road. Metcalf is also very steep but its less than 2 miles and about 1000 feet. Don’t forget to look back and enjoy the great view. Metcalf Road passes by the Coyote Creek Open Space reserve and turns onto San Felipe which takes you downhill back to your starting point.

Then a long descend into St. Helena which has lots of places to stop and refuel. Ten miles down the road from St Helena, just before the Trinity climb, is the Oakville Grocery Store which has good food and bathrooms in the back. The Trinity climb starts at mile 31, picks up another 2000 feet of elevation in 6 miles before descending into Glen Ellen where you turn onto Warm Springs Road and Bennet Valley for the final 9 miles back to Santa Rosa.

SAT APR 3 5!/M/53 Unofficial Nifty Ten Fifty
Leader: Adam Hunt     (310) 913-7918
Meet at 8:00 am
Start Location: El Cerrito Plaza BART

GPC has no shortage of challenges, but this April tradition can't go unrecognized. I'm sure many of you have asked the question how many vertical feet can you cram into 50 miles? In the Berkeley and Oakland hills, the answer is a lot. About 10,000 ft. If you are interested in a tour of the most difficult hills in the area, please join me for this epic ride. We will be riding the official course: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/4394647

Low gears are highly recommended. Please bring plenty of food and water. For more information about the course, please checkout the official site: http://www.niftytenfifty.com/

SUN APR 4 3!/TM/53 Social Springtime in Morgan Territory
Leader: Mary Ann Jawili     (661) 343-5737
Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
GPC Route: Morgan Territory from Pleasant Hill BART
Start Location: Pleasant Hill BART
UPDATE:

Our second ride leader is Steve Tracy, who will join us from Heather Farms. If you prefer to start at Heather Farms instead of Pleasant Hill BART, meet him at the northern corner of the park at 9:10am for a 9:20am rollout.

Spring is the best time to Morgan Territory. This will be a social TM-effort ride, maybe with an average moving speed of 12mph. Please let me know if you'd like to co-lead.

Water, snacks, and restrooms in downtown Clayton (Mile 10); rest at the top of Morgan Territory (Mile 23); lunch at Draegers Market (Mile 39). This ride is timed to start with the Antioch-bound train that arrives at Pleasant Hill at 8:56am. COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced! Don't forget your buff or mask. If you need to contact the leader on the day of the ride, please call or text (not email).

SUN APR 4 5/T/30 * Easter on San Bruno Mountain
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469
Leader: Chris Witt     (510) 548-5790
Meet at 10:30 am

Meet at the Panhandle restrooms; located in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, just west of Ashbury. This location is easily accessible from Civic Center BART; Bart trains scheduled to arrive at 10 and 10:02 should allow enough time to get to the ride start. Exit BART at UN Plaza, go west on Market Street following the well marked route to the "wiggle" to the Panhandle. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/19701226 .

Overlook the Golden Gate; ride along Ocean Beach and to the top of San Bruno Mountain, the highest spot for miles around. After descending from the summit, we will regroup at the San Bruno Park picnic area (water, restrooms) for lunch/snacks; bring your own. Return through McLaren Park and over Twin Peaks where the city spreads out in front of you as you descend. Parts of the route have covid closed roads or traffic slowing. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14187874 . We will marshal corners, but if you want to go ahead; you can use the ridewithgps route. After the the 20° higher than normal temps of a few days ago, the West side temps will feel very cool. Dress for it, and it will be fun.

Notes on the pace: Chris and I are on a tandem; slow on the climbs; fast on the descents. This is an urban/suburban ride which means more stop signs and stop lights--which makes 30 miles feel longer. It is hilly, and there a couple of very short steep sections--if they were longer we would add a !.

Masks and social distancing required at regroups.

SAT APR 17 5!/T/64 * The Devil Meets Mr Morgan
Leader: Jessica Jensen     (510) 508-6389
Meet at 8:45 am for a 9:00 am start

This is not the "usual" version of this ride. We will meet in Danville at Diablo Vista Park at 1000 Tassajara Drive and ride the mountain first before heading to Morgan Territory. This will be a no drop ride, and we will most likely break up into smaller groups naturally by pace, with rolling regroups.

We'll ride up South Gate, go to the summit, then come back down North Gate where we'll head towards Clayton and out to Morgan Territory. Optional lunch at the end of the ride at Draeger's Market. There's water at the Junction, at the Summit, and Clayton - and last time I was at Morgan Territory (maybe a month ago?), bathrooms and water were both functioning.

There are several bail outs. You can opt to just go to the junction. You can opt to head back to Danville directly after the mountain. There may be someone driving sag as well who can carry some water and snacks (please bring)! The weather is predicted to be quite warm, so plan accordingly.

Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/802876

Hope to see you there!

Leader: Michael Koved   (510) 428-0763
Meet at 7:00 pm

Are you thinking about working with a coach? Are you wondering what to look for in the relationship with a coach, and how a coach can help you make the most out of being an athlete?

Join the GPC Speaker Series on Thursday, April 22 at 7pm to hear our featured speaker Nate English give us the inside scoop on what you need to know when choosing a coach. What does a good athlete-coach partnership look like? What should you look for in a candidate coach? What should you screen for when selecting your coach?

Nate's in a great position to answer these and many other questions. He's placed 5th at the US Pro TT, been in the Top 5 and top 10 at national level events, won dozens of P12 races and has finished 14th in the Amgen Tour of CA. And he's used this expertise to coach all levels of cyclists, from a U23 MTB National Champion to people in their 50s and 60s who have reached performances beyond what they've done 20 years prior.
