Posting this ride to celebrate my (Lillian's) last ride in the east bay before moving to the east coast! I find the thursday night T-pace ride is a quintessential east bay ride, and thus a perfect farewell to the bay.

We'll go up Spruce to Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then turn right to head down Shepherd's Canyon and ride back through Montclair and via the Lake Temescal bike path. On our way back we'll stop for pizza at Nick's (about 2.5 miles from N Berkeley bart or 0.5 miles from Ashby bart).

I'd love for anyone to join!

Meet at 10:30 am for a 10:45 am start
GPC Route: Delta Birding
Start Location: Isleton Main Street
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Please see the updated information - in bold in the description.

At the ride start is a public parking lot with a public restroom nearby. This ride will meet up with Pat Greene's/Chris Witt's shorter version at Staten Island Road. Because of bridge construction, we have updated the route to an out and back; please use this Ride with GPS linK: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49558046

Lunch is at the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center on Franklin Road. Most people bring their own, but it is possible to buy lunch in Thornton. There is a Subway just after crossing under Interstate 5 at Thorton Rd near the Chevron station.

Weather: Right now, NOAA predicts 53°F at the start and a high of 63. But if the sky cover/fog lingers expect colder temps. If you plan to spend time birding, you will not generate as much heat as you would on a vigorous ride. LAYER UP! Speaking of FOG: no rain is predicted, but various models predict variable amounts of fog. Heavy fog could cancel this ride, but for now, because of the fog prediction, we have delayed the meeting and departure times by 30 minutes: meet at 10:30, leave at 10:45.

Please preregister.

WED FEB 4 1/T/25 Wed Ride - Deb's Diversion--Delta Birding
Leader: Pat Greene     (415) 481-5469    text
Leader: Chris Witt
Meet at 11:00 am for a 11:15 am start
Start Location: Staten Island Road
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Franklin Road is closed between Desmond and Twin Cities. Use this RideWithGPS route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53880358 It is the same route as the second route below; but this iteration is in the GPC library so you can print cue sheets if you want.

Feb 2--Fog forecasts call for morning fog, afternoon sun. Let's start the ride later than listed; meet at 11:00 for 11:15 start.

Please preregister!

Note the somewhat later than usual meeting time and ride start to accommodate long drive and give fog a little extra time to clear.

Riders encouraged to bring their own binoculars or spotting scopes.

We love cycling in the Delta in a this time of year because of the many thousands of birds that come to spend the winter. Even if you don't stop much and use optics, the sight of Sandhill Cranes, sometimes dancing, but always impressive; large flocks of white geese and dark geese in the air and on the ground; and the sounds they make as they communicate with each other are mesmerizing. If you do stop, you may also see Tundra Swans, many kinds of ducks, raptors, and a variety of other birds.

Let's meet on Staten Island Road and do a 25 mile loop (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38563999) so we have time to linger at the birding hot spots; Staten Island Road to near the end of the pavement; the wetlands across from the Cosumnes Visitor Center where we may need to leave our bikes briefly; Desmond Road; and any place we see great gatherings of birds.

Doing the 25 loop allows us to ride through historic Locke and to stop at Mel's Mocha and Ice Cream in Walnut Grove. In my experience, the most troublesome traffic on Twin Cities Road lasts only ~1 mile between Franklin Road and the I 5 entrance. I would skip the loop only if I have spent too much time and energy birding and want/need to get back to the car directly (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45635541). This route is almost out and back but takes some farm roads to avoid traffic on N Walnut Grove Road.

Meeting Place: To get to the Staten Island meeting place, turn R, off Walnut Grove Road and go ~0.2 mi. There is a 'wide spot' in the road parking lot and a seasonal porta-potty. Please carpool to conserve parking.

Lunch: Lunch is at the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center on Franklin Road. Most people bring their own, but it is possible to buy lunch in Thornton.

Heavy fog could cancel this ride.

Start Location: El Cerrito Plaza BART

UPDATE:

This weeks route We'll aim to end the ride at cheese board by 7:30 as a send off for Naor on his travels so I made this one a little shorter. We might cut off a little more if we are running late.

The route will vary week to week but we always start at El Cerrito Plaza BART. I have upgraded this ride to TM to better reflect sorts of riders which typically show up. I will continue riding at the same pace that I always have and we will continue to have frequent regroups so don't let the new pace deter you from showing up. Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections often up hill or flat, but expect some short bumpy descents in the dark.

Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Pre-registration

Please join us for the weekly South Park repeats ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We’ll head up Virginia St and Spruce to Spruce/Grizzly Peak for our first regroup, then head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we’ll climb South Park, descend, and climb it again as many times as the mood strikes us (usually two times is enough, but individual riders can shorten or lengthen the ride as desired). South Park is closed to cars starting November 1st, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete two round trip ascents up South Park then back to N Berkeley Bart, expect about 2,300 feet of elevation gain. This is a great way to stay in shape over the winter!
NOTE: This is a night ride. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.

It’s out and back so you can do the full route of 50 miles, going down The Wall to Ed Levin Park or turn around before it to avoid climbing back up The Wall. Bring a snack or food for halfway of route. For more miles and climbing you can go up Kilkare Hill in Sunol. Stops: Sunol Park for restrooms, mile 9, on the way out and Sunol Corners market which has great food, mile 41, on the way back. I've had coconut before but mostly get the sausage. SUN FEB 8 2/TM/34 Not the Super Bowl, but Still a Great Ride - Pt Richmond and Around China Camp
Leader: Steph Bike Leader
Meet at 10:00 am
GPC Route: China Camp from Point Richmond
Start Location: Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline
Pre-registration

Get a ride in and still make it home in time for kick-off. We'll meet at Miller Knox park in Pt Richmond, jump on the Richmond Bridge very quickly, and then do a loop around China Camp. The leader is borrowing MJ's ridewithgps sheet, but will be showing people a short-cut immediately after the bridge which makes it a little easier to get out to Pt San Pedro Road, and which does involve a very short hard-packed dirt section along the water (I have one other short-cut after the Marin Civic Center, but that one involves a seriously steep, if short, climb up to the bike path -- we'll discuss whether people are up for it or not once we're out there). No lunch stop planned, but we will take at least one break at one of the parking areas/restrooms in China Camp, so bring whatever snacks you want. The ride is actually more like 1500 feet; RWGPS does not have elevation data for the RSR bridge. Come get in a ride before settling in for the football or the commercials. Contact leader via email if necessary. Advance registration appreciated.

Giving the trails some time to dry. Ride is cancelled.

It is recommended to have 32mm or bigger tires. Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections will be fire roads with two sections of singletrack at the end. We will have regular regroups and there will be an option to skip the singletrack sections at the end of the ride.

UPDATE:

Overnight rain sets up a very cold and windy Thursday. This ride is cancelled.

This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. This listing will be updated when the route and leader have been determined, usually by Monday evening. Status updates for weather cancellations will also be posted on the schedule.

There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Faster riders should feel free to push on after lunch. Just tell the leader first.

Heavy fog could cancel this ride.

Start Location:
Piper Park
Pre-registration

From Piper Park (water and rest rooms), we ride the back roads to Fairfax. Then over White Hill to Woodacre, Sam P Taylor, Platform Bridge, and Pt Reyes Station (mile 25) for snacks. Then south to Stinson Beach for lunch (mile 42). Continue south on Hwy 1 to the climb through Muir Woods and the descent into Mill Valley. Final climb over Camino Alto and return to Piper Park via the bike path.

If there is an event at Piper Park and you can't find a spot, park around the corner on Larkspur Plaza Drive. It's uncommon, but it has happened.

This ride sometimes has a faster group (more like M pace) and a regular TM group. The groups come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. Arrive by the meeting time if you don't want to chase.

There are many options to shorten, including:

-- Finish at West Dublin/Pleasanton BART (approx mile 51 of the route); or

Calaveras Reservoir, light traffic on this road, from West Dublin/Pleasanton Bart Station. Meet in Stoneridge Mall parking lot just outside Bart station around 1000 or so for a 1015ish start depending on Bart. Bart arrival shows 948 am. GPC Route:
Vacaville to Winters CCW Loop
Start Location:
Lagoon Valley Park
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Per several weather sites, rain chances after 10am are below 10% so we are good to go (even if we see a few drops on the drive out there). See you there.

Counterclockwise loop.

Start at Lagoon Valley Park. Parking costs $5 (at least that's the amount last time) - can pay with cash or credit card at machine, or use ParkMobile app. Bathrooms available.

Lunch at Winters (buy or bring your own) - bathrooms available there too.

Ride back to Lagoon Valley via Putah Creek and Pleasants Valley Roads.

Given the rainouts the last two weeks, setting Thursday as a rain date as a backup to double our chances of getting the ride in.

UPDATE:

Ride is canceled due to wet weather

The route will vary week to week but we always start at El Cerrito Plaza BART. I have upgraded this ride to TM to better reflect sorts of riders which typically show up. I will continue riding at the same pace that I always have and we will continue to have frequent regroups so don't let the new pace deter you from showing up. Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections often up hill or flat, but expect some short bumpy descents in the dark.

UPDATE:

Today’s ride is cancelled due to wet trails.

This ride will start with the TM pace ride at El Cerrito Plaza BART. This will be a no drop ride good for riders new to gravel riding, training for the GPC Gravel Century, or just want to ride at a more chill pace. It is recommended to have 32mm or bigger tires. Bring warm layers and bright lights to see by. The majority of the dirt sections will be fire roads with two sections of singletrack at the end. We will have regular regroups and there will be an option to skip the singletrack sections at the end of the ride.

GPC Route:
Rockville, Winters, Berryessa loop
Start Location:
Rockville Bike shop
Pre-registration

A warm day is predicted. Maybe 70 degrees in Winters. Counterclockwise loop from Rockville to Winters for lunch, then return via Hwy 128 (Lake Berryessa, the Glory Hole, Cardiac Hill) and Hwy 121 to Wooden Valley. This version adds Gordon Valley on the return which usually has less headwind and traffic than staying on Wooden Valley.

Park way in the back of the parking lot, not in front of any of the businesses.

There is sometimes a faster (more like M pace) group on this ride, but we all come back together at frequent regroups and lunch. We will start riding when everyone who arrived by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase.

Rode Wednesday so no Thursday rain date needed.

See the listing for Wed Feb 25. If that ride was rained out, we will try again today. Contact the ride leader if you aren't sure.

[RWGPS route] Kick off the weekend with a short but sweet roll by bike! </pun> Shortbread Rides are short (~10-mile) rides to bakeries one Friday a month. The ride ends at the bakery. For this Shortbread Ride, we'll visit Mey Cafe & Bakery. I will bring a lock to share with up to two other bikes. I plan to be at the bakery for no more than 30 minutes before heading back home.

Start Location:
Mill Valley - Public Safety Buildings
Mandatory pre-registration

Mill Valley has the Mill Valley Swirl, frozen yogurt and ice cream made with organic dairy products from Strauss. We hope some of you will check it out.

The route is here, the summit is not on the cue sheet; the out and back adds ~8 miles and ~800 feet climbing.

Notes for the cue sheet: Mile 9.1-Regroup at Fairfax Police Station/Town Hall. Restrooms/water. (or some may stop at the coffee shop at the Bolinas Road intersection). Mile 19.2 Informal regroup at Bolinas Road/Ridgecrest intersection, Mile ~22.5 Regroup, Lunch, hidden picnic tables west of the road. Mile 23-Turn left for optional trip to the summit, also porta-potties. Mile 30.9 Turn right on Miller, go one block and cross the street to reach the Mill Valley Swirl, at 417 Miller.

Bring lunch, and substantial snacks since lunch is at ~22 miles.

Be prepared for warm temps and fog incursions—wear layers, and don’t leave home without your windbreaker.

PLEASE PREREGISTER before Wednesday 6PM or ride may be canceled. I can carpool with another bike and rider.

Because these rides are being scraped and publicly available through google search my phone number is not listed but if you log into the GPC website my contact information is available by searching the membership list.

This 45-mile route combines two popular loops close to home. Begin at McNear’s Beach in San Rafael where there are bathrooms and free parking. From here, we will begin a counterclockwise loop around China Camp State Park, cut through the city of San Rafael and make our way towards Paradise Drive. Lunch will be at mile 27 in Tiburon’s shoreline-park- with- a- view next to the Angel Island Ferry Terminal and Café Acri. After lunch we will complete the Paradise loop and head back to McNear’s Beach via Point San Pedro road. A special bonus for the contemplative and the loquacious is breathtaking outdoor seating at Andy’s Market near the end of our journey (mile 43). Consider stopping for a cool beverage and end-of-the-ride conversation with your Grizzly bike buddies.
