Ride Schedule for January 2018
Leader: Mark Abrahams (510) 524-1294
Meet at 8:20 am for a 8:25 am start Rain Date: Sat Jan 6
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26651360. Paper maps will be available for the Mt Diablo and Walnut Creek portion (only).
Start that new year right! Meet 8:20am, ready to ride, at Spruce St and Grizzly Peak Blvd in Berkeley (plenty of on-street parking, or just ride there). Prompt 8:25am start. We'll ride to the summit of Mt Diablo — an essential New Year's tradition — via Southgate. With luck, we'll converge with other GPC rides there. Wear your GPC attire to help your fellow club members identify you among the multitude of riders on the mountain. Descend Northgate for an optional hot lunch at Ygnacio Plaza Shopping Center (choice of pizza, burrito, Peet's, etc) and then return to Berkeley. Return route depends on how long we schmooze at lunch.
RSVP's appreciated (but not required) for map count. Rain or significant chance will likely postpone to Saturday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00 pm the night before — don't assume anything.

Rained out, it seems. Of course, weather being what it is (unpredictable), there's always the possibility we'll wake up to a sunny day. In the unlikely event that Tuesday is clear and rideable, I'll post an update early tomorrow. In the more likely event that it is raining in the morning, you will not hear further from me about this matter.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
The Presto route this month is to Rockville http://ridewithgps.com/routes/19473018 (this does not apply to the other groups).
Meet and sign-in at 9:00, introductions at 9:15, then roll. The first 7.5 miles all pace groups ride together at a social pace...you'll ride with club members you might not see for the rest of the month. After that, we split into five separate pace groups. The pace groups are named after musical tempi: Largo, Adagio, Andante, Allegretto, and Presto. Click on the tempo for the exact route. More information about this ride, excluding route details, is posted on-line at http://www.grizz.org/rides/assr.php. Rain cancels. If weather is questionable, or for other questions, contact ASSR Coordinator John Buenfil. Leaders TBA.
Leader: Mark Abrahams (510) 524-1294
Meet at 8:30 am for a 8:35 am start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
If the ASSR was rained out, then we will ride the usual Presto route of the month, but with no stop at Orinda BART and no all-club social segment. Your meetup choices are: (1) Spruce St & Grizzly Peak Blvd in Berkeley (meet 8:30am sharp, ready to ride; roll 8:35am); or (2) Wildcat & SPDR (be at the northeast corner, ready to ride, by 9:00am); or (3) arrive at Orinda BART on the 08:45 train, meet any other Prestos who were also on the train, and ride together to Wildcat/SPDR. If coming by BART, please RSVP so we'll know to wait a bit if the train is delayed.
This ride will happen only if the ASSR Presto was rained out (or significantly shortened) and if Sunday's weather is ok. To confirm, or if Sunday's weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before — don't assume anything.

Late ride stop in Pt Reyes Station on the return to hydrate, refuel, warm-up and socialize outside the Bovine Bakery. True TM pace, which allows for a variety of actual paces. Meet at 9:00 am
Start Location: North Berkeley BART
Join us for this leisurely paced bike ride along the Bay Trail, where we will have the chance to immerse ouselves in the peaceful surroundings … on the way out, at our left, vistas of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and beyond … will emerge progressively ahead of us, on a clear day … in contrast, on a foggy day, mysterious silhouettes will manifest themselves on the horizon.
This bike ride is a promenade, a warm up for future bike rides, where we will be eventually riding a little bit longer, and perhaps at a slightly faster pace. And it is all about living the moment, and being alert of our surroundings to avoid any potential hazards, as we are enjoying nature, exercising, honing our cycling skills, and ultimately it is about having fun, in company of other people with whom we share the love of cycling.
We will meet at the North Berkeley BART, and over the Pedestrian / Bicycle Bridge we will get to the Golden Gate Fields … to the Richmond Marina … and eventually to the end of the trail, where will stop for 15 or 20 minutes for people to have enough time to use the restrooms, take pix, drink water, eat snacks, stretch, do yoga, of just laying on the grass (the grass maybe wet, though). After our break, wee will return to North Berkeley BART. There will be bathrooms and water along the way. We w

Meet at 7:30 am for a 7:40 am start Rain Date: Sun Jan 21
Start Location: Pleasanton - Neal & Railroad Ave
This is the classic GPC Del Puerto loop from Pleasanton. A fabulous variety of terrain for riding, sightseeing, climbing (including one 1.5 mile steep pitch, hence the "!" in the listing), descending, pacelining (optional), and a bit of craft beer drinking too (also optional).
In 120 miles we'll traverse the Livermore Valley; ride out to the Central Valley; skirt around Tracy and Patterson; climb Del Puerto Canyon to San Antonio Junction; climb away from the Junction and zoom down Mines Road; and finally re-traverse the Livermore Valley back to Pleasanton. (Side note for those who have ridden that "other" bike club's route recently: We follow a classic, different, and IMHO better route through both valleys — including the historic Hwy 33 through Vernalis and Westley.) The route includes 3 rest stops. It has no shortcuts or bailouts. A shorter (100 mile) option is available, starting in Livermore, but for this you must RSVP to the ride leader. RSVP's are appreciated, in any case, for map count.
Be ready to ride at 7:35am — please arrive long enough in advance to get ready. Prompt 7:40am departure. Location: Pleasanton at Railroad Ave just north of W. Neal (between First and Main Sts). Nice public restrooms are nearby, one block south (but if you might need the restroom, please arrive 10 minutes earlier). Be prepared for chilly morning weather. Bring lights in case of a later than planned return. Sunset is earlier than you expect. The route: ridewithgps.com/routes/26625111.
NWS PoPs 20% or more will likely postpone to Sunday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before or check the online listings for an update — don't assume anything.

Meet at 8:50 am for a 9:00 am start
An option for those wanting a medium distance M-pace in the east bay hills. We'll start close to the intersection of Skyline and Redwood and take the zoo route (to avoid the Redwood Road closure, which can be traversed in the weekend, but is muddy) to Castro Valley, Palomares and Niles Canyon (be careful here!) and return on Foothill, San Ramon Valley Blvd, Danville Blvd, the LM trail, Canyon Road, little Pinehurst, and Redwood. Optionally, some may choose to return on big Pinehurst. The store in Sunol and Peet's in Danville will be rest stops.
Please RSVP to ride leaders so we can pre-print the ride sheet and speed up the start. Pace is listed as M but we will regroup for slower riders (including one of the leaders) at several points. TM-ers welcome.
Weather looks good for Saturday but check here for a Saturday morning update if the weather changes.

Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Meet at 9:00 am
Start Location: Union City BART
Meet at the Union City BART Station at the south end of the bus zone. We will ride on local streets to the entrance of Quarry Lakes Regional Park where we will ride on hard-packed gravel trails around the lakes. These lakes are on the flyway for migrating birds and we should see many varieties of water birds such as pelicans and geese, as well as raptors.
We will then cross Alameda Creek and travel west toward the Bay on the paved Alameda Creek Regional Trail. Turning into Coyote Hills Regional Park we will circle the park’s hills, rich in views of wetlands and the Bay. The park is also popular with migrating birds. This is an easy ride that is mostly level, with some climbing in Coyote Hills. With the exception of the hard-packed gravel trails through Quarry Lakes, the ride is on paved asphalt and much of the ride is on trails separated from auto traffic.
More information about the parks and trails in this ride can be found at the East Bay Regional Park District website at ebparks.org

Today is too wet for a good ride. We will use the raindate, Thu Jan 11.
Develop your night time group riding skills. Route is Grizzly and Skyline as far as Roberts; regroup and reverse route. We will ride in full dark, so bring descent-worthy front and rear lights which you have set to solid — not blinking. Reflective gear is encouraged — anklebands, etc. Contact me in advance if you have questions about night riding. Inclement weather (rain; significant threat; or starting temps below 45 degrees) postpones. More ride info is at http://www.abriz.net/gpc/rad.html including current raindate status.

We w

Pleasanton - Neal & Railroad Ave
