FRI FEB 2 5/T/30-38 The Ascent to Mt Diablo
Leader: Maria Teresa Garcia De La Noceda     (510) 725-8405
Leader: Glenn Kirby     (510) 882-6808    text
Leader: Thomas Ayres     (510) 295-8228    text
Meet at 9:00 am
Start Location: Pleasant Hill BART

According to the Wikepedia, “Mount Diablo is sacred to many California Native American people; according to Miwok mythology, and Ohlone mythology, Mt Diablo was the point of creation”. Its magnetism is still felt today, specially among hikers, and cyclists; this may be explained also by looking into its volcanic origin, since the upper portion of the mountain is made up of volcanic and sedimentary deposits.

The Ascent involves a steep climb, 6 ½ miles up to the Junction, and 4 additional miles up to the Summit, therefore you need to feel comfortable about climbing, confident about descending, at ease with your bike, and follow the Safety Tips outlined by the Mount Diablo State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517),
specifically for Drivers and Cyclists:

  • Observe posted speed limits.
  • Stay in your lane on blind curves and do not cut corners.
  • Do not pass on double-yellow lines and until you have a clear view of oncoming traffic and it is safe to do so.
  • Wearing headphones that cover both ears is illegal. Wear only one headphone if you have to.

Today, captivated for its majestic magnetism, we are going to start our bike ride from Pleasant Hill BART, and via some quiet, and flat residential streets we will arrive to North Gate Rd., where we will initiate our climb to the "Magic Mountain". At the Junction, we will REGROUP, and rest.

Some of us, will turn around, and descend, retracing our steps, and stopping at the Ygnacio Valley Shopping Center, at 1881 Ygnacio Valley Rd., in Walnut Creek, to have some lunch … There are a variety of cuisines to choose from.

Some others, after the Junction, will continue the climb, up to the Juniper Campground, or up to the Summit. Then, they will stop, as well, at the Ygnacio Valley Shopping Center, for lunch … where they will rejoin the rest of the group.

This ride is co-sponsored with the Bicycle Section of the San Francisco Bay Area Chaper of the Sierra Club.

Meet at 8:00 am for a 8:10 am start   Rain Date: Sun Feb 4
Start Location: Cotati - Gravenstein Hwy Park-&-Ride (Westside)

This route is delightful, but the first 25 miles are quite hilly!  Sonoma Mountain Rd followed by Trinity Rd eastbound — the hard direction.  The rest of the day is rolling hills and valleys: Silverado Trail to Calistoga; on to Healdsburg, Westside Road, and then we'll work our way back to Cotati.  Optional  "liquid-high-carb regroup" a few miles before the end.

Be ready to ride at 8:05am — please arrive long enough in advance to get ready. Prompt 8:10am departure. Location: Cotati, Gravenstein Hwy Park-&-Ride, just west of Hwy 101. Sunset is earlier than you expect. RSVP's are appreciated, for map count.

NWS PoPs 20% or more will likely postpone to Sunday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before or check the online listings for an update — don't assume anything.

Cotati - Gravenstein Hwy Park-&-Ride (Westside)

Restrooms are nearby (but if you might need the restroom, please arrive 10 minutes earlier). Be prepared for chilly morning weather. Bring lights in case of a later than planned return. Sunset is earlier than you expect. RSVP's are appreciated, for map count.

NWS PoPs 20% or more will likely postpone to Sunday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before or check the online listings for an update — don't assume anything.

This month's Presto route: Morgan Territory https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26831823.

The first 7.5 miles all pace groups ride together at a social pace...you'll ride with club members you might not see for the rest of the month. After that, we split into five separate pace groups. The pace groups are named after musical tempi: Largo, Adagio, Andante, Allegretto, and Presto. Click on the tempo for the exact route. More information about this ride, excluding route details, is posted on-line at http://www.grizz.org/rides/assr.php. Rain cancels. If weather is questionable, or for other questions, contact ASSR Coordinator John Buenfil. Leaders TBA.

If the ASSR was rained out, then we will ride the usual Presto route of the month, but with no stop at Orinda BART and no all-club social segment. Your meetup choices are: (1) Spruce St & Grizzly Peak Blvd in Berkeley (meet 8:30am sharp, ready to ride; roll 8:35am); or (2) Wildcat & SPDR (be at the northeast corner, ready to ride, by 9:00am); or (3) arrive at Orinda BART on the 08:45 train, meet any other Prestos who were also on the train, and ride together to Wildcat/SPDR. If coming by BART, please RSVP so we'll know to wait a bit if the train is delayed.

This ride will happen only if the ASSR Presto was rained out (or significantly shortened) and if Sunday's weather is ok. To confirm, or if Sunday's weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before — don't assume anything.

Ride out to Pinole, along San Pablo Dam Road and Pinole Valley Road.  Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Planned destination is the Bear Claw Cafe, a quaint, old-timey family bakery in downtown Pinole, with a visual historical treat in the alcove next to the building. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend.
