Ride Schedule for November 2021
Leader: Stephen Chan
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:30 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
Pre-registration
South Park Drive in Tilden Regional Park is closed to automobiles from Nov1-Apr 1 to allow newts to migrate. To celebrate the opening of a really nice car-free road, please join this ride. Please note, there is usually a weekly winter GPC South Park ride but this is a separate event but heavily inspired by that outing.
This ride will start at the top of Spruce (at Grizzly Peak). We will ride out Wildcat Canyon to South Park Dr. We will regroup at the top and bottom of South Park. Do as many repeats as you want! I plan to do 2 ascents (maybe more?). The ride will end at the top of South Park Dr and riders should be comfortable routing from there.
South Park Dr is about 1.4 miles in length and ascends nearly 700 ft in elevation. The average grade is over 9% and there are a few double digit pitches. The descent can be hardest part of this ride. Be mindful of your speed and be prepared for pedestrians, dogs, and road debris. Given the short mileage, riders across a variety of paces are encouraged.
Please bring lights.

Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side
Pre-registration
Please join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! Meet at the water fountain at Spruce/Grizzly Peak. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). South Park is closed to cars, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain. This is a great workout!
NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels the ride. Please contact ride leaders with any questions.
https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2742955390 (this route shows 3 ascents up South Park, we’ll only do 1-2 ascents. Thanks to Nick Umemoto for the route and inspiration!)

Meet at 4:55 pm
Start Location: Rockridge BART
Pre-registration
Join us for a quick, mid-week leg-stretcher while there's still enough light to ride after work! We will ride up to Tunnel via Broadway, then take Grizzly Peak to Claremont. Our goal is to get to the bottom of Claremont by sunset, so we will be leaving promptly at the meetup time of 4:55pm. RideWithGPS link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37770859
For those that wish to join, we will be heading down to Arthur Macs for some post-ride bites and brews (this is not included in the RWGPS link above, but it's located right next to MacArthur BART).
Please be sure to bring lights as we will likely be finishing up the ride just after sunset - especially if you're joining the bites + brews part.

Meet at 9:30 am Rain Date: Fri Nov 5
GPC Route: Heather Farm, Morgan Territory, Diablo Junction
Start Location: Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
Pre-registration
The ride is on for today. See you there.
Check back for possible postponement to the rain date (tomorrow). I've already had my annual ride in the rain, so I won't hesitate to postpone.
Meet in the penultimate northern parking lot of Heather Farm in Walnut Creek (by the baseball fields) for this ride to Clayton, Morgan Territory, and Diablo Junction. Lunch will be at Draeger's Market in Blackhawk Plaza.
Note that Heather Farm is about a mile from Pleasant Hill BART, which is probably the preferred way to get there. If you want to make the ride easier you can skip the Diablo climb after lunch and work your way back on the Iron Horse Trail. Navigation for that option is up to you.
We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at the park in Clayton, where we will have a brief stop.

Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: San Leandro BART
This birding ride is co-listed with the Golden Gate Audubon Society. Cathy Bleier (csbleier@sbcglobal.net) from GGAS is co-leading.
Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary is a favorite shorebird hot spot--best in the morning before or after high tide. Arrowhead Marsh is a favorite for spotting Rails at high tide. We will cycle from San Leandro BART onto Alameda where Elsie Roemer is located. After birding Elsie Roemer and other sites on Alameda, we'll head over to Arrowhead for birding the marsh and adjacent sites, and then return to Coliseum BART.
Registration is on the Golden Gate Audubon site where non-members are able to register. There is a limit of 12 riders. Go to this link (https://goldengateaudubon.org/event/alameda-coyote-bike-november-copy/) to register and for further details.

Propose we start with local Dirty Zoo loop starting and ending at Redwood Regional (Skyline Gate). This route combines Redwood Regional (avoids West Ridge Down) and Chabot trails into a good mix over ~30 miles.
UPDATED Route is on ridewithgps.com
A new monthly Mixed Terrain adventure ride during the winter months with a rotating, rider driven, suite of routes in East Bay, Marin and the Peninsula. Anyone who is a regular participant can offer route suggestions. A few of our favorites may prime the pump for the first few months (e.g...Dirty Zoo [East Bay], Planet of the Apes [Peninsula], and Coastal [Marin]).
This ride will respect the trails and execute only when they are dry enough for riding without damage.
Plan will be to offer MTB and Gravel pace groups and no rider will be left behind.
Participants should be willing and prepared to do >5K climbing and 3-4 hours of ride time.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start Rain Date: Sat Nov 20
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Pre-registration
I didn't get to do my 80th birthday ride (pandemic, return of afib) so this ride should have been 161 miles, but out of kindness to me and in the interest of attracting more than two riders, I've averaged my age in miles and kilometers to get 66 miles (rounded), and found this 66 mile, rather flat, maybe a bit boring, ride in my stockpile of routes. It starts at and returns to good old Orinda BART. We'll stop between mile 34 and mile 38 for a quick coffee and bite to eat in Dublin, and at the end get dessert at the Republic of Cake by the Orinda Theater.

Ebikes welcome and I may use mine, depending....

Start Location:
Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - north side

Start Location:
Walnut Creek - Heather Farm
