Leader: Melarie Johnson
Meet at 6:30 pm

Location: Jeff’s garage, 15000 Broadway Ter; Oakland

Since the invention of the inflatable bicycle tire 140 years ago (John Dunlop, Scotland), we cyclists have lived in fear of getting a flat.  Conquer that fear!  Jeff and Melarie will demonstrate several ways to quickly remedy a flat tire.  You will get to fix one (or two) yourself!  We’ll go through the various tools available and ways to keep your rubber-side always reliable.  If you want, bring your own front wheel (not as messy as the rear), the tire-irons you use, and the pump you carry on your bike (if any).
Secure bike parking available, but I’m way up a hill, and the sun will be down by the time we end.  6 cars can park in the driveway; more parking on Gwin Rd ½ block up Broadway Ter. We’ll be sitting on comfy chairs in Jeff’s garage, so dress well if cold.

THU AUG 22 1/L/0 Chains and Grease - Novice Hands-On Repair Clinic
Leader: Jeffrey R. Kurtock     (510) 653-1771
Leader: Melarie Johnson
Meet at 6:30 pm

Location: Jeff’s garage, 15000 Broadway Ter; Oakland

In 1885, John Starley invented the “Safety Bicycle.”  Avoiding the “header” risk that plagued PennyFarthings, Starley’s bicycle required a chain to drive the wheel.  And ever since, cyclists have had to know something about keeping that chain in working order.
Your chain has to be (relatively) clean, and well lubricated.  We’ll discuss several ways to clean your chain, several ways to lubricate it, and when to replace your chain, turning the old one into jewelry.  We’ll even show you how to wax a chain.

Bring water, snacks, light clothes for the climb, and warmer clothes for the potential cooler weather on our way back.

Any ??? please call Estella, 510.725.8405

Leader: Karen Street     (510) 356-7081
Meet at 9:00 am
Start Location: Daly City BART
UPDATE:

Tell me by August 14 if you want to go. After that, you can still go, let me know, but you are responsible for hostel reservations.

August 24—3L44+ Daly City BART to Pigeon Point Hostel

August 25—2L30 to Santa Cruz hostel, and hanging around

August 26—2L53 to Monterey hostel

August 27—1L15-20 along 17 Mile Drive, visiting Monterey and return to Bay Area

We'll stay at Pigeon Point, Santa Cruz, and Monterey hostels. Reservations work better earlier rather than later. Let me know of your interest ASAP so I can change reservations. We may tweak departure time according to needs, and BART schedules.

We’ll enjoy the coast (day 3 is inland), and stop for pictures, not set speed records.

The first day is the most difficult. You can cut miles and hills off by taking the bus to Montara hostel, or Half Moon Bay.

THU AUG 29 1/L/0 Darned Shiftless Cyclists! - Novice Hands-On Repair Clinic
Leader: Jeffrey R. Kurtock     (510) 653-1771
Leader: Melarie Johnson
Meet at 6:30 pm

Location: Jeff’s garage, 15000 Broadway Ter; Oakland

For the first time in 1937, you could ride the Tour De France with a derailleur equipped bicycle.  Today, gear shifting is pretty popular on bicycles (just don’t tell the SF bike messengers!) With 30 or more speeds, shifting can be complex.  We’ll go over how to test your bike for proper shifting, how to adjust it to perfection, and repair tips for when that no longer works. Brakes are powered by the same cable-system, so we’ll discuss maintenance and use of brakes too.

Also, please inspect your bike and tires and make sure all is in good working order. Some of the roads are in pretty poor condition - wide tires recommended.

Please RSVP, and let me know if you'd like a route sheet (if no requests for route sheets, I will probably forego printing any)

Meet outside the pay area on the west side of the BART station. Leaders plan to be on trains scheduled to arrive at 9:10 and 9:16 from SF and El Cerrito, respectively. If you drive to the start, be at the station early enough to be at the station to meet the 9:10 train for sign in. We will ride up to 20 flat miles of paved or packed dirt trails and city streets. Shortcuts are possible. Bring binoculars and wear layers to stay comfortable during multiple stops. Bring snacks, lunch and water; we won't pass places to buy. Bicycle helmets required. We will cycle urban streets from BART stations to the Bay Trail and then proceed to bike and bird the shoreline to view returning shorebirds and the waterbirds that remained for breeding, as well as raptors and passerines. The Bay Trail south of Grant Ave is unpaved. If you are uncomfortable on hard-packed dirt, join us to Grant Ave (where you can retrace to San Leandro BART or escape to Bay Fair BART). We will plan to bird down to Winton Ave, or time permitting, all the way to the Hayward Interpretive Center.
