Ride Schedule for November 2019
Leader: Bill Bagnell (510) 504-5401 text
Meet at 8:45 am for a 9:00 am start Rain Date: Sat Nov 16
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Why 64 miles for a 79th birthday ride? Well, I couldn't come up with a good, flat 79 mile route that didn't involve a remote start and finish -- I'm old and not in shape to do 79 hilly miles -- and 79 KM or 49 miles is just too short, so I averaged the two and have posted this nice 64 mile loop starting and ending at Orinda BART and with lunch at The Forge in Danville. I posted it as TM, my likely pace, but Ts and Ms are welcome. RSVPs appreciated so I can have a headcount for lunch.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start Rain Date: Sun Nov 10
Start Location: Duncans Mills
Pre-registration
Rescheduled to Sunday, Nov. 10. Same time and place. This ride is cancelled for Nov. 2 due to the fires, air quality and trauma occurring in Sonoma County currently. (thank you PG&E). Contact Ride Leaders if you have any questions or concerns.
This is a gorgeous and challenging ride featuring 5,000 feet of climbing and finishing with a spectacular descent down Meyer's Grade to Route 1 into Jenner. The route is challenging along remote country roads - and rewarding for strong T riders.
Important: Bring plenty of liquid and food. One possible water stop just past the half way point may or may not be available and no real food options once we pass Cazadero about 5 miles in. There will be an optional stop at Aquatica Cafe in Jenner (about five miles before the end of the ride) to refuel with some creamy hot chowder. Park on B Street in Duncan's Mills. Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza
You can think of this short (distance) ride like an evening spin class with good intervals. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. If you complete 3 round trip ascents up South Park, expect 13 miles and about 2,500 feet of elevation gain. If you can't meet us at the start, feel free to join us along South Park Dr.

Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: Coliseum BART
This birding ride is co-listed with Golden Gate Audubon, with Cathy Bleier, csbleier@sbcglobal.net, as co-leader
We will cycle and bird our way to a high tide (about 6 ft.) at Arrowhead Marsh. Leaders will use BART trains scheduled to arrive at the Oakland Coliseum BART station at 9:26 and 9:32 from SF and East Bay, respectively. Riders and potential drivers should meet near BART ticket machines. The route enters the Shoreline Trail at the end of 66th Ave. (Zhone Way), with birding stops at the channel alongside the trail entry point and seasonal wetland at Garretson Point. After Arrowhead, we’ll probably head over to Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary in Alameda, from where we can bike back to Fruitvale or Coliseum BART. We will look for wintering ducks, shorebirds, and rails. Beginners welcome. Please bring lunch because THERE’S NO PLACE ALONG ROUTE TO BUY FOOD! Also snacks since lunch may be late. Possible lunch stops are picnic tables along Swan Way or near Shoreline Center. Bring binoculars, warm layered clothes, and HELMETS. Restrooms are located in the BART stations, at Arrowhead Marsh, and Shoreline Center.
Rain cancels; if weather is uncertain, email Pat the night before to receive last minute updates.

So many choices: You may make this a leaderless 1 way ride by continuing down to Milpitas, then finding BART. You can lower mileage by turning around before most others do so. You can add by starting or ending at Castro Valley BART, or riding to or from points further North
Come ride one of the 3 best roads in the east bay. Out Foothill and Calaveras roads to the far side of the reservoir and turn back before the drop towards Milpitas. Food stop on the way back in Sunol. Meet in the Stoneridge mall parking lot just south of the BART station. Second to last stop on BART, not last station. Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Rockville Winters loop
Start Location: Rockville Bike shop
TENTATIVE: Air quality has been pretty good in this area, but check back here for possible changes if it worsens.
From the south, take Hwy 80 and take the Suisun Valley/Pittman Rd exit. From Oakland or east of the hills Hwy 680 to Hwy 80 is probably faster. Go left on Suisun Valley Rd. After about 1.7 mi go left on Rockville Rd. The bike store is on the left. Park all the way in the rear of the lot, not in front of any of the stores.
We will ride a 66 mile loop up to Winters for lunch and back via Wooden Valley, passing the glory hole at Lake Berryessa, which is high and dry this time of year.

Meet at 8:15 am for a 8:30 am start
Start Location: Valley Ford, School Rd.
This is a late-season King Ridge loop that can be finished before dark (lights recommended just in case). We will start at the Valley Ford school, there is parking in front for 4-8 vehicles, carpool if you can. There is a 40 mile stretch with no food, so either bring your own or plan to buy at the Cazadero store (which makes sandwiches). We will avoid the stretch of highway 1 around Bodega Bay by reversing our route back through Duncan Mills and Occidental. The route follows rugged, remote roads with no cell reception, make sure you and your bike are well prepared!

We'll ride together to the ceremony. After that the fun begins. We'll all ride across the bridge into Marin. Rick will lead a contingent back to the East Bay, and take the Bay Trail south to end at El Cerrito Plaza Bart. Phil will ride to Paradise Drive and then take the Richardson Bay Trail and over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, ending at Montgomery BART. If you need to bail out before that you can take the 11:40 or 1:40 Larkspur Ferry to San Francisco. Bring Clipper Card or train fare for BART.

Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Dean will be unable to lead this month so Jim O'Melia has graciously volunteered to come out of "retirement" to lead the November "Bear Claw" ride.
Ride out to Pinole, along San Pablo Dam Road and Pinole Valley Road. Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Planned destination is the Bear Claw Cafe, a quaint, old-timey family bakery in downtown Pinole, with a visual historical treat in the alcove next to the building. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Europa Hof-Brau, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14580950. GPC Route:
Rockville Winters loop
Start Location:
Rockville Bike shop

Start Location:
Valley Ford, School Rd.

Ride happened on Nov 2 so this version is unnecessary and therefore cancelled.

Phil will ride to Paradise Drive and then take the Richardson Bay Trail and over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, ending at Montgomery BART. Start Location:
Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Check out Social Biker Group on Facebook. Join free.
Start Location:
North Berkeley BART
Explore the Waterfront trails from Oakland to Richmond. This ride will cover various road conditions from the smooth bike path on the Bay Bridge to some rough roads at the Port of Oakland then along the Waterfront to Point Richmond and back. Please pre-register or RSVP by email with ride leader. Route: https://www.strava.com/routes/22119195
Please note the pace has been changed from TM to M pace.
Start Location:
Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza
You can think of this short (distance) ride like an evening spin class with good intervals. We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park one - three times (round trip). Cyclists of different paces are welcomed on this ride such as MB, M, TM. Slower paces may climb less vertical feet and ride fewer miles than faster riders. At this time of the year South Park should be closed to motor vehicle traffic. If you complete 3 round trip ascents up South Park, expect 13 miles and about 2,500 feet of elevation gain. If you can't meet us at the start, feel free to join us along South Park Dr.
