Ride Schedule for February 2020
Leader: Mark Abrahams (510) 524-1294
Meet at 7:30 am Rain Date: Sun Feb 2
Start Location: Pleasanton - Neal & Railroad Ave
This is the classic GPC Del Puerto loop from Pleasanton. A fabulous variety of terrain for riding, sightseeing, climbing (including one 1.5 mile steep pitch, hence the "!" in the listing), descending, pacelining (optional), and a bit of craft beer drinking too (also optional).
In 120 miles we'll traverse the Livermore Valley; ride out to the Central Valley; skirt around Tracy and Patterson; climb Del Puerto Canyon to San Antonio Junction; climb away from the Junction and zoom down Mines Road; and finally re-traverse the Livermore Valley back to Pleasanton. Note for those who have ridden that "other, younger" bike club's route recently: We follow a classic, different, and IMHO better route through both valleys, including vineyard and foothill views through the Livermore valley and the historic Hwy 33 through Vernalis and Westley in the Central Valley. The route includes 3 rest stops. It has no shortcuts or bailouts.
For the Pleasanton (120mi) start, be ready to ride at 7:35am - please arrive long enough in advance to get ready. Prompt 7:40am departure. Location: Pleasanton at Railroad Ave just north of W. Neal (between First and Main Sts). Nice public restrooms are nearby, one block south (but if you might need the restroom, please arrive and be parked by 07:15 latest).
A shorter (101 mile) option is available, starting in Livermore. For this, meet us at the intersection of Concannon Blvd and S Livermore Ave, on the south corner of the intersection. Please be there, ready to ride, at 08:20 (although our exact arrival time is not possible to predict). There's a parking lot on the north corner, across the street. The location is about 3/4 mi beyond (southeast of) Livermore Civic Center. RSVP's are appreciated, in any case, for map count.
Bring lights in case of a slower ride than expected, especially if you're doing the 120 mile route. Be prepared for chilly morning weather.
The route: ridewithgps.com/routes/26625111. Paper maps are available, but if you want one please RSVP so that I can bring enough.
NWS PoPs 20% or more will likely postpone the ride to Sunday. If weather is doubtful, contact ride leader by 9:00pm the night before or check the online listings for an update - don't assume anything.
Leader: Stephanie Clarke (510) 423-1873
Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start Rain Date: Sun Feb 2
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Let's put in some time on the bike on Super Saturday, so as to not feel guilty about all those chicken wings, chili, chips and dip and whatever else might be on the menu at game time the following day. We'll ride the "One Bakery" Lucas Valley, Cheese Factory, Marshall Wall, Pt Reyes Station loop. Lots of miles, some challenging hills, a "!" for getting up the Marshall Wall, and then the roll down the coast to either the Bovine or the leader's new preference of the picnic tables and coffee hut at the feed store on the other side of the street. Bring snacks to get you through until our late-ride stop in Pt Reyes Station. Note: 20% or better chance of rain will POSTPONE UNTIL SUPER SUNDAY – call leader by 8:30 that morning if in doubt. Those wishing to shave off mileage are welcome to meet the group in Nicasio at approximately 10:45-11:00, which will reduce the overall mileage to 40.

Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Ride out to Pinole, along San Pablo Dam Road and Pinole Valley Road. Our goal is to get some riders who may cringe at riding the hilly 'bears route'; but who would like to do about 30 miles to maybe get back into riding again. Planned destination is the Bear Claw Cafe, a quaint, old-timey family bakery in downtown Pinole, with a visual historical treat in the alcove next to the building. Faster riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Europa Hof-Brau, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14580950. Meet at 9:30 am
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Let's stick closer to home on this holiday weekend ride. The South Century loop is surprisingly hilly, and just what we need to keep building our legs for the big ride that first weekend in May. Start at Orinda BART, then off through the hills to Redwood, the zoo, the golf course, etc. No true lunch stop, but bagels, coffee and snacks at the Starbucks plaza in San Leandro before we start the loop back. 20% or greater chance of rain will cancel, but the current forecast is for balmy conditions. No sweeps, and leader rides a TM pace, but everyone comfortable following a cue sheet, or who otherwise knows the route, is welcome.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
Start Location: Berkeley - Aquatic Park Playground
Start on east side of Berkeley's Aquatic Park (come down Bancroft, take a left at Aquatic Park and go 'til you run out of road). This is a mostly flat ride on the Bay Trail with a few ugly hills in Pt. Richmond. After lunch at Little Louie’s, there is an optional tunnel that will cut out a few hills. John leads over those hills, Karen through the tunnel.

Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: San Leandro BART
BART recently updated schedules. The train from SF is now scheduled to arrive San Leandro at 9:49.
Meet outside the pay area on the west side of the station. Leaders plan to be on trains scheduled to arrive at 10:00 and 9:56 from SF and El Cerrito, respectively. If you drive to the start, be at the station ready to roll at 10:00. We will ride up to 20 flat miles on paved or packed dirt trails and city streets. Shortcuts are possible. Bring binoculars and wear layers to stay warm on this leisurely paced ride. Bring snacks, lunch and water; we won’t pass places to buy. Bicycle helmets required. We will cycle urban streets from the BART station to the Bay Trail and then proceed to bike and bird the shoreline to view wintering ducks and shorebirds, as well as raptors and passerines.
The Bay Trail south of Grant Ave is unpaved. If you are uncomfortable on hard-packed dirt, join us to Grant Ave (where you can retrace to San Leandro BART or escape to Bay Fair BART). We will plan to bird down to Winton Ave, or time permitting, all the way to the Hayward Interpretive Center. This birding ride is co-listed with Golden Gate Audubon, with Cathy Bleier co-leading. Rain cancels. If the weather is questionable, look for updates on the status of the ride on the GPC website. If you have questions, call or email Pat.

Meet at 8:30 am for a 8:45 am start
Start Location: Palo Alto - Page Mill Park and Ride
Please join me for a beautiful but challenging south bay ride. Unfortunately the fun begins immediately with a 9 mile 2000 foot climb (with a regroup at the summit) of Page Mill before the long descent into Pescadero. We'll make an efficient artichoke bread stop before getting back on the road for a 17 mile loop south and back to Pescadero. We'll stop again to refuel before heading north to Tunitas Creek and another long meandering climb amongst the redwoods. One of my favorite climbs. Its (mostly) downhill back to the Park & Ride on Page Mill Road. Here's a link to the ride.

Meet at 10:00 am for a 10:15 am start
Start Location: Nicasio
Leap Year -- now that's something to wrap your mind around. Let's celebrate our extra day with a favorite rolling ride from Nicasio out to Drake’s Beach in the Pt Reyes National Seashore. We’ll start by taking in the Nicasio reservoir, cross over Platform Bridge and then head up Olema Hill to Pt Reyes before heading out Bear Valley Road and Sir Frances Drake to the coast for lunch (picnic tables and bathrooms available, sandwiches can be purchased at the excellent deli along the way). After lunch we’ll head back to Pt Reyes Station for an optional re-group at the feed store coffee hut before the short section left to Nicasio. Expect at least two significant climbs – Olema Hill and the hill after Inverness leading up to the park – and lots more good uphill grades over the rollers as we make our way out to the coast, not to mention the leg-cruncher to get back up to the main road from the beach after lunch. We may be treated to huge bull elephant seals lazing away on the beach, and to Tule Elk on the hills near the coast. Leader rides at a fast TM pace; other paces welcome for those comfortable following a cue sheet (you won't get lost). Bring water, lunch or money to buy at the deli in Inverness Park, and clothing suitable for the weather. 20% chance or more of rain will cancel; call the leader by 9:00 that morning if in doubt.

Slower paces may climb less vertical feet and ride fewer miles than faster riders. At this time of the year South Park should be closed to motor vehicle traffic. If you complete 3 round trip ascents up South Park, expect 13 miles and about 2,500 feet of elevation gain. If you can't meet us at the start, feel free to join us along South Park Dr.

San Leandro BART

Palo Alto - Page Mill Park and Ride

Start Location:
Nicasio
