TUE MAR 2 - WED MAR 31 Varies March GPC Challenge Rides - A Few Epic Climb Series
Leader: Thomas Fraser     (954) 290-3903    text
Leader: Thomas Dunscombe     (510) 385-5859    text
Meet at 8:00 am

A Few Epic Climbs Series: Complete riding 3 of the 4 rides

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends pod or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series on your own schedule within a calendar month. Complete 3 or 4 rides to be entered into the raffle for a custom buff and each climb completed will be tallied for the annual award of a patch or the rights to purchase the custom Jersey.

Please see "How It Works" at the bottom of the descriptions of the rides.

As an added incentive we are taking the monthly Challenge Rides to the next level by offering a new GPC Climbers Jersey. The design of the new jersey is in progress but will be based upon the Matt McHugh jersey design. You'll earn the right to purchase this beautiful and unique jersey if you complete 30 of the 50 Epic Series climbing rides by year's end. Custom patches will also be developed to signify 30, 40 or all 50 climbs have been accomplished. Don't wait, get started with the epic posted series rides. Any of the epic series rides you completed in November & January will count towards the 2021 annual goal of 30 out of 50. You can also ride any of these 50 Epic Series rides in any order you prefer, please remember to record & send them to ChallengeRides@grizz.org for confirmation & accounting towards your annual goal.

Fort Ross WB & Coleman Valley from Occidental

Occidental is a pretty little town with places to get food and water. Be sure to stop in Cazadero General Market before taking on Fort Ross. Once peaking Fort Ross and turning on Meyers Grade, this decent is one of the most spectacular in Northern California. Take your time and really take in the view.

Geysers NB + Optional Skaggs Springs Climb

Geysers is a beautiful and challenging ride but there is no water from beginning to end (unless you carry a water filter). Start with two large bottles and on a warm day, be sure to bring extra. The decent back to Cloverdale is ridable but the road is in exceptionally poor condition. Bikes should be in top notch condition with pumps and tube repair kits. Otherwise consider turning back at the top and ride directly back to Geyserville. There is an optional out and back up Skaggs Springs Road for those still feeling strong. There are also no water stops along Skaggs Springs

How Does It Work?

  • Exclusively for GPC members (for insurance and any raffle prizes)
  • Signup & accept the electronic waiver on the GPC Ride webpage
  • Record your ride for insurance* and verification of achievement (use free versions of Ride with GPS or Strava)
  • Share your ride (via email ChallengeRides@grizz.org & share on the GPC Strava Club page)
    • If not a member of the GPC Strava Club please request to join on the GPC Strava Club page
  • Upon achievement of the minimum rides in a monthly challenge series your entry will be included into a raffle for any prizes
  • Upon completing 30 of the 50 Epic Climb Series by Dec 31, 2021 you’ll be entitled to purchase the Epic Climb jersey only available to those who complete the Epic Series of rides. You’ll also be awarded a (free) custom patch signifying the number of climbs completed (30, 40 or 50)

* Please note your club can provide the same medical coverage for the ride routes in the series as if you were on a standard club group ride. Recording of the ride assures verification of riding the mapped route. When riding off the predetermined route coverage is not included just like a club ride (e.g., like riding from home to the meeting location).

Leader: Elizabeth Crocker     (510) 484-1060
Meet at 5:30 pm for a 5:35 pm start
Start Location: Berkeley - Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd - Plaza

Join us for a weekly Tuesday evening ride. This is a short ride but with a steep climb! We'll head out along Wildcat Canyon to South Park Rd. From there, we'll climb to the top of South Park once or twice (e.g. we’ll climb S. Park, descend and climb again if the mood strikes us). Cyclists of different paces are very welcome to join. NOTE: it will be dark by 5:30 in mid Nov, so this ride is mostly in dark. Come with bright front and rear lights (and make sure they work). 20% chance or greater of rain cancels ride. Please contact ride leaders if there's unfavorable weather.

https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2742955390 (this route shows 3 ascents up South Park, we’ll only do 1-2 ascents. Thanks to Nick Umemoto for the route and inspiration!)

-Chain lubrication: Do’s and don’ts
-Cleaning the braking surface (rim brake)
-Inspecting tires: looking for cuts, squaring, sidewall tears. Benefits of wiping tires. Removing tire spews (if you’ve got tight clearance).

El Cerrito Del Norte BART to I-80 Bikeway to Wildcat Creek Trail to Meadow Canyon Trail to Wildcat Canyon Road and then wiggle down through Sunset View Cemetery to El Cerrito Plaza BART. You could also peel off at Inspiration Point or Spruce/Grizzly to get home or ride even further. Bring lights just in case. Meadows Canyon Trail is already dry from the previous rain. If you are on the fence, here are some pictures for inspiration: [1][2]

If you are interested but can't make it this week, email the MJ, as she is trying to gauge interest in gravel rides. We hope to offer a regular weekday early evening mixed terrain ride with alternating routes in the Berkeley/Oakland hills.

This long-time Grizzly Peak classic ride goes through Valley Ford, Occidental, Monte Rio, along Bohemian Highway and through Guerneville to lunch at the Korbel Champagne Cellars (which is open for outdoor seating, I checked!). For reference, there is free street parking all around the park, and there are bathrooms and water at the park as well.

We didn’t get to celebrate Jim’s birthday last year, so looking forward to finally getting to do this no-drop celebratory ride together again! We may split into 2 groups if needed - T and TM - so please join us!

UPDATE:

Tuesday March 30 is the last Tuesday evening ride of the winter season. Please join us!

South Park is closed to car traffic, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain.

Ride will follow GPC Covid-19 protocol, including mandatory pre-registration for members. Please wear face coverings at the start/end and during all regroups.

Take your time and really take in the view.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35238079

Cleanliness is a Virtue & Flats are Fixable

As part of the Speaker Series events, we are kicking off a quarterly Ask a Mechanic series. This session will focus on drive train maintenance, fixing flats and pre-ride safety checks. We will also be taking your questions from the basics and beyond.

Our featured speaker is Sam Goldenberg, of Goldie’s Gears in Oakland. He has 10 years experience as a bicycle technician; training from United Bicycle Institute in Ashland, OR. Sam has worked as an instructor in a Community Bike Workshop setting as well.

The agenda will be:

Cleanliness
-Cleaning the drive train: chain, cassette, derailleur jockey wheels, chainrings. Tools and tips
-Chain lubrication: Do’s and don’ts
-Cleaning the braking surface (rim brake)
-Inspecting tires: looking for cuts, squaring, sidewall tears. Benefits of wiping tires. Removing tire spews (if you’ve got tight clearance).

Flat Fix
-How to uninstall a tire without cursing (too much)
-Inspecting the tire and inner tube (locating the culprit)
-Reinstalling the tire and inner tube without tire levers

Pre-Ride Safety Check
-Appropriate tire pressure
-How tight should my quick releases be?
-What should I bring with me on a bike ride?

Our Lanterne Rouge is released at 45 minutes in and given a 2 minute head start. The Yellow Beacon ride leader maintains the listed pace for the full hour for those who do not wish to chase.

Start Location:
El Cerrito Del Norte BART

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35474235

Let's do this mixed terrain ride through Tilden on Thursday after work. Dirt fire roads up, road down.

Not So Rushin River Ride
Start Location:
Petaluma - Walnut Park

This long-time Grizzly Peak classic ride goes through Valley Ford, Occidental, Monte Rio, along Bohemian Highway and through Guerneville to lunch at the Korbel Champagne Cellars (which is open for outdoor seating, I checked!). Return is through Forestville and Bloomfield, with a few hills to liven things up.

60 minutes, D pace, 21mph (2.0 w/kg). This ride presented by The Big Ring (TBR) encourages those who want to push their pace a little higher than the standard sub 2.0 w/kg social rides on Zwift. We roll together on the Watopia Waistband route, which is mostly flat. For the best ride experience, please stay by the leader's Yellow Beacon.

UPDATE:

Tuesday March 30 is the last Tuesday evening ride of the winter season. Please join us!

South Park is closed to car traffic, which makes it perfect for winter riding. If we complete 2 round trip ascents up South Park, expect ~10 miles and about 1,800 feet of elevation gain.

Ride will follow GPC Covid-19 protocol, including mandatory pre-registration for members. Please wear face coverings at the start/end and during all regroups.
