Meet at 9:30 am
GPC Route: Miller Creek to Tomales (long version)
Start Location: San Rafael - Marinwood Community Center
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Looks like the Marin fire is over. Our ride is on.

From Marinwood to Tomales via Nicasio and Chileno Valley, return via Hwy 1. This longer version of the ride comes into Tomales from the back side using Alexander, Fallon Two Rock, and Middle Roads.

There are some shorter options. You can start your ride in Nicasio to save 20 miles for the day. We should pass through there around 10:15. Also, if you are having trouble keeping up, you can skip the turn onto Alexander and ride straight into Tomales for the lunch stop. That saves about 4 miles. Please review the map ahead of time and be prepared to navigate this change on your own if you think you might want to do it.

Pre-registration is appreciated. Faster riders are welcome if they don't mind waiting for regroups.

We'll start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time, you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at our regroup in Nicasio, or at the Cheese Factory.

Meet at 9:00 am for a 9:15 am start
Start Location: San Rafael - Miller Creek Community Center
Pre-registration closed. You can sign in at the start.
UPDATE:

Riders should check AQI and determine if riding is a good option for them. Otherwise, we are still on. OPTIONAL start from Nicasio will get you nearer the coast (better air quality?) sooner. If starting from Nicasio, please plan on meeting the group at the intersection of Lucas Valley Road and Nicasio Valley Road a bit before 10:00, i.e., the group will not detour into Nicasio. Let's ride!

Shamelessly borrowing from Mark N. and the Thursday Duros West crew, come experience some rolling Marin County hills, punctuated by several big climbs. From the firehouse at Miller Creek we head to Fairfax via Big Rock, San Geronimo, and Woodacre. Then up Bolinas Fairfax Road to Alpine Dam, the junction, and then directly down to lunch in Bolinas. Return via Hwy 1, Olema hill, Platform Bridge and Nicasio. Note this is not a no-drop ride, but both slower and faster riders are welcome if you are comfortable following a cue sheet or gps route on your own. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required. Check the website on Friday to confirm no last-minute AQI changes, but for now the weather and air reports look good. Bring food or $$ to buy lunch, water, etc. Leader will not check email on Saturday morning, so any last-minute questions should be via phone or text.

See the Route on RideWithGPS.

SAT SEP 4 - MON SEP 6 4/LT/34 LaborDay - eastbay bike touring overnighter
Leader: Stephen Chan
Meet at 10:00 am
Start Location: Rockridge BART
Mandatory pre-registration with max 12 riders

I'm pleased to announce a 2 night bike-camping trip for Labor Day weekend. Ride familiar East Bay routes and camp along the way.

The trip is designed as a loop through the East Bay. The first camp is along the Bay shoreline and surrounded by restored wetlands but never far from the urban chaos. The second camp is tucked away in the hills amidst redwood trees along Redwood creek. I plan to ride this as a counter-clockwise loop (start/end Rockridge BART).
Camp locations:
Saturday Sept 4 - Coyote Hills Regional Park
Sunday Sept 5 - Redwood Regional Park

On Saturday, I will lead a group from Rockridge BART (10 am depart) in North Oakland loosely following the Bay Trail. Please note that this route will have some ‘easy’ gravel (please see RWGPS links below). Of course, attendees can ride from the starting point of their choosing and meet at camp. Note that the campsite is a short ride along the Alameda Creek trail from Union City BART. The camp is also accessible from the peninsula via the Dumbarton Bridge.

On Sunday, I will lead a ride from Coyote Hills to Redwood Regional Park via Palomares Rd and Redwood Rd. This is a hillier route but one that is very scenic and more rural than the more direct alternatives. Expect double digit grades and sustained climbs (2 miles at 6%). I plan to stop in Castro Valley for supplies / snacks.

For the return route on Monday, I will lead folks back to Rockridge BART via Pinehurst. Again, attendees can take other routes as needed.

Please bring $10 cash to help defer the cost of the campsite reservations.

This is a camping trip! Attendees should bring/carry their own shelter, food (dinner/breakfast), camp stuff. If you have questions about carrying stuff on a bike, please ask! As such, I expect to keep the pace slow with breaks as needed. The ride rating of 4 is more reflective of the second/third days of riding. The first day is flat. Mileage varies per day but see details below.

Full disclosure, I have announced this event with a local bike-touring Meetup group. Expect some non-GPC riders. If you have signed up there already, no need to register again.

I intend for this to be a bike touring trip; however, if you have a reason to drive or need a car at camp, please contact me as I will have some parking permits. Sag wagon with beer?

Lastly, I could use additional ride leaders as this could be a large group. If this is of interest, please reach out! Thank you!

Leader: Chris Witt
Meet at 10:00 am
Pre-registration
UPDATE:

Air quality is marginal for me (90). We will show up at starts, but I may not be able to do whole ride.

The start time at Dunphy Park is 11:00 am.

The correct ridewithgps file for the Dunphy Park Start is https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37399572

The ridewithgps file for San Francisco has been updated Saturday ~4pm; if you have already downloaded it, please update.

Preregistration strongly encouraged!

Start: McLaren Lodge, Golden Gate Park; Dunphy Park, Sausalito

Hawk Hill and the Marin Headlands is one of my favorite rides in the Bay Area. Chris and I will meet SF riders at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park; from there we will ride to Dunphy Park to pick up riders who want to start in Marin. The route from San Francisco crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and heads to Dunphy Park in Sausalito where we will meet Marin riders. Then we will head back through Fort Baker, up Hawk Hill, down to Gerbode Valley, up past Battery Townsley and down to Rodeo Beach. Bring snacks or lunch to enjoy at Battery Townsley or at picnic tables at the beach or lagoon. Then it's out through the tunnel and back to either SF or Sausalito.

Please email me your preferred meeting place: (San Francisco https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26010909) or (Dunphy Park https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37035759), and let me know if you want a paper cue sheet.

The Dunphy Park start ride is only 17 miles and parking nearby may be difficult. If you park at the Public Safety Building in Mill Valley (https://www.grizz.org/routes/locationDetail.php?id=50), you can add 7.4 flat miles on the Sausalito-Mill Valley path (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37035759), and have an easier drive from the East Bay.

The weather forecast is good, but deterioration of Air Quality will cancel this ride. Watch for updates .

This is the route for the ride: https://www.grizz.org/routes/detail.php?id=244

Tour the redwoods of central Marin county from Nicasio and have lunch at the Bovine Bakery on Highway 1. Return through Olema back to Nicasio. The 24-mile ride joins the 44 mile ride in Nicasio and loops back to Nicasio. There are hills, but we will ride them gently. Bring lunch or $ to buy. No drop. Helmets required. Rain cancels; if weather is dubious contact a ride leader.

If you drive via Lucas Valley Road you will pass the 44-mile bicycle riders, so please take extra care.

GPC Route: ASSR Allegretto Alternative
Start Location: Orinda BART NW corner of parking lot
Pre-registration

Spend your holiday closer to home by taking in the scenery along the Bay on this classic GPC ride. We'll mostly follow the ASSR Allegretto Alternative route (GPC route id 188). The route is hilly and we'll ride at a TM pace. Regroups/breaks at Pinole Valley Park (restrooms), Starbucks before Lake Herman, Lunch at Luigi's in Martinez. Note this is Not a no-drop ride, so be prepared to navigate on your own via a cue sheet or gps device if you go off the front or off the back. Bring snacks, $$, water and everything else you'll need for a longish day in the saddle. Please download or print your own cue sheet; leaders will not have them at the start. Poor AQI will cancel the ride, but expect the ride to go given that the best air should be near the water, which we will overlook for a lot of the ride. Note that leaders may not check email on the morning of the ride, so any last minute questions should be sent either the night before, or by text or calls that morning.

GPC Epic Climbs September Challenge – Panoramic & Bolinas-Fairfax Road

This months challenge includes two classic climbs that can be completed on one bitesize but challenging ride. It starts at a Larkspur Lucky’s parking lot and climbs over the Corte Madera Avenue hill for a warm up before getting to Mill Valley where the real climbing begins. If the fog is at bay you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the Marin Coastline from Panoramic Hwy and the descent into Stinson Beach. If you’re riding on a weekend, traffic can be substantial so be sure to keep to the right and let cars go by as you can safely do so. There is a small park with water and port-a-potties right across the street from the Stinson Beach Market. Be sure to fill up on water for the Bolinas-Fairfax road climb. Approximately 4.5 miles north of Stinson Beach turn right on Bolinas Road for a 4 mile 1500 foot climb. Unlike Panoramic, traffic is usually very light on Bolinas-Fairfax Road so this climb is quite peaceful. At the top you’ll be greeted by a majestic stand of redwoods which will tower over your descent into Alpine Lake. From top of this climb all the way to Fairfax the road is mostly in poor condition so take your time and avoid the many potholes.

MON SEP 13 Speaker Event Cycling and the Law
Leader: Michael Koved     (510) 428-0763
Meet at 7:00 pm

Our featured speaker is Gary Brustin. The presentation will cover the following topics:

  • How to avoid the most common accident patterns.
  • Understanding motorists' excuses and using them to your advantage.
  • What to do after an accident.
  • How the legal case unfolds and when it's time to contact an attorney.

Mr. Brustin has been an avid cyclist for over forty five years. His first road bike was a Schwinn Varsity. Fortunately, he’s upgraded his equipment over the years. He now rides a custom Calfee with Campy Record.

He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1971, and earned his legal degree at Hastings College of the Law in 1975. He is a member of the California State Bar Association.

His passion for cycling has also shaped his professional career. Twenty five years ago he decided to transform his law practice from general personal injury cases to a specialized cycling practice. Today his entire case load involves cycling related matters. He has handled over 1,000 bicycle cases and continues to personally represent each client. Additionally, he has proudly co-sponsored numerous events and teams. Two examples are the Velo Girls and the Race Across America. In his spare time, he acts as a volunteer attorney for various bike organizations.

He’s also very committed to bicycle advocacy. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. He also served on the Board of Directors of the California Bicycle Coalition for ten years, and the League of American Bicyclists board for nine years. In 2012 he established the National Legal Affairs Committee for the League.

He maintains offices in Northern and Southern California and can be reached at bicyclelawyer.com

Here is the route in our ridewithgps GPC club library https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37504826

If the weather cooperates, this is a beautiful ride along the coast down to the lighthouse at Pigeon Point (regroup/snack). Return is through some country roads, past Butano State Park (mile 25.7) to Pescadero (lunch) where I'm hoping to pick up some artichoke bread.

Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37496161 (Thank you, Pat Greene)

There is ample parking on Main St south of the ride start near the fire station (start ID 38) which is where I plan to park.

Please pre-register. Note the later (10:30) meet time.

There are a couple nice loops not included in this ride, but they add an hour to the day. Traffic home after the ride can be slow.

Rain cancels. You can also join our web forum and check the forum archives for the current information or contact Mark Sapiro at (415) 388-8910.

UPDATE:

The NWS forecast predicts 50% chance of rain along the north coast (Jenner) on Saturday after 12:00. Rain is also predicted further inland and south, but not until late evening.

We will start the ride at the time and location as planned, and ride the route at least to the top of Joy road. Unless the predictions change, we will cut out the coastal loop by turning right on Coleman Valley road, picking up the route again in Occidental. This will be a ~50 mile loop. Lunch will be in Freestone.

Rain gear and lights recommended.

This route is a variation of a ride I did years ago with the yellow jackets, it's challenging but very scenic, with a wide range of terrain. Lunch will be at Duncans Mills, with rest stops in Valley Ford and Freestone. Joy Road is very steep and poorly paved, and much of the ride is remote without any services, so make sure your bike and you are prepared.

We will try a new start location, at LaPlaza Park in Cotati, where there are bathrooms, water, a coffee shop, see the rwgps for an exact location.

UPDATE:

Due to the closure of big Pinehurst (between Canyon + Skyline), we are doing a little diversion. Instead of going down big Pinehurst, we will continue along Skyline, make a left at the T at Skyline/Joaquin Miller, left at Redwood, left up little Pinehurst, right on Canyon.

Coffee will be at Sisi's at mile 23.9--not in DT Orinda as it was originally.

We will continue along Moraga Way and Camino Pablo and then go up and over Wildcat, down Spruce and right on Virginia back to BART.

Revised RWGPS route here. The total mileage is now 40 miles.

If taking BART, please take the Richmond-bound (orange) train, which gets you to N. Berkeley at 9:29.

Start at North Berkeley BART, up Spruce St, Grizzly Peak and Skyline, and down Pinehurst. We return via Moraga Way with a little diversion along Ivy Drive to get ourselves off the busy street for a bit. Then it's back on Moraga Way to DT Orinda for a coffee and a snack at Peet's. Back to Berkeley via Wildcat and Spruce. Instead of taking Spruce all the way down, we'll make a right on Los Angeles to the roundabout. Few differences, a little novelty. Here's the full route.

Distance: 10-15 miles

Elevation: 1,000 - 1,500 feet elevation gain

Thank you!

From our Marinwood start, we will ride to Nicasio, then the Cheese Factory, Hicks Valley, and over the Marshall Wall to Hwy 1. Lunch in Pt. Reyes Station before completing the loop.

Shorten the ride to about 42 miles by starting in Nicasio. We should pass through there about 10:20 or so.

Please pre-register if you can. Stronger riders are welcome if they are willing to wait at regroups. We will start when everyone who arrives by the meeting time is ready. If you arrive after the meeting time you may have to chase. You can probably catch us at Nicasio, or at the Cheese Factory.

If you are not a member of GGAS, close the login request that opens, and you should be able to register; registering means you agree to both GGAS and GPC waivers.

We will meet outside the pay area on the west side of the San Leandro BART station. The leaders plan to be on trains scheduled to arrive at 9:53 and 10:00 from SF and El Cerrito, respectively. If you drive to the start, be at the station ready to roll at 10:00.

It’s still early for ducks, but come look for shorebirds, waders, rails, raptors and a few passerines on this shoreline ride. We will ride up to 20 flat miles from San Leandro BART (on city streets) to San Leandro Marina and down to Winton Ave on the mostly paved Bay Trail. The Bay Trail south of Grant Ave is unpaved, so if you are uncomfortable on hard-packed dirt and some gravel, you can join us till Grant Ave where you can retrace to San Leandro BART or escape to Bay Fair BART. Bring binoculars, snacks, lunch and water; we won’t pass places to buy food. Wear layers to be comfortable on this leisurely paced ride. Bicycle helmets required.
