GPC Epic Climb August Challenge – Montevina & Montebello Roads - 5,600 feet of climbing - 45 miles

Grizzlies we’ve created a series of fun self-directed rides you can complete over a calendar month, at your convenience, with your family or friends or on your own. These are non-competitive with the intention to simply achieve the completion of the series on your own schedule within a calendar month. Complete the minimum rides to be entered into the raffle for a custom buff and each climb completed will be tallied for the annual award of a patch or the rights to purchase the custom Jersey.

After a month off, Epic Climbs is back for August with a ride in the South Bay and two beautiful epic climbs that I recently rode and highly recommend. It starts at a Campbell Safeway and follows the Los Gatos Creek trail for the first half dozen miles. There are a couple very ridable gravel sections along the Creek and the Lexington Reservoir but be prepared to dismount and walk a couple short steep gravel sections. After crossing over Hwy 17 you’ll soon be on a beautiful 4 mile 1900 foot climb of Montevina Road. When the pavement ends keep going and walk your bike up the last few yards to the gate. Step around the gate and you’ll be on a very ridable dirt trail which will take you to a paved Bohlman Road and down to Saratoga. Bohlman is a very steep one lane road with a great view of the South Bay so be careful, take your time and enjoy the view. Check out downtown Saratoga and to top off your fluids before heading out to Montebello Road. As you ride northbound from Saratoga, just before reaching Montebello Road there is one last chance to fill up at a Cal Fire Station with a hose bib (water). This 4 mile 1800 foot climb up Montebello Road passes by several large vineyards and vistas of the south bay. Look closely and you’ll see spaceship Apple campus in the distance.
