GPC Ride Schedule for September

(Last modified Sunday, August 23 2015, @ 11:44 PDT)

In addition to the rides listed below, we also have weekly rides.

See our ride rating system to decode the secret markings 3/TM/50 etc.

Tue Sep 1   5/M,B/24,32   The Tuesday Evening Ride
Friendly but hilly workout & skills ride. We have two pace groups -- M and B -- each usually with its own leader. The M group varies between moderate and peppy, depending on the mood of the day and who shows up. The B group is more vigorous; it is usually a sustained hard workout. Either group will help develop your skills in climbing, descending, drafting, pacelining, positioning, and sprinting. Meet 5:30 p.m. sharp at Spruce and Grizzly Peak Blvd, at the little plaza next to the reservoir (not the bus stop benches) for 5:35 p.m. departure. BRING LIGHTS to get home by. Ride repeats every Tuesday till the end of September. RAIN CANCELS. M group leader: Mark Abrahams (510) 524-1294, <dma at abriz dot net>. B group leader: Matt McHugh <mattmctour at gmail dot com>. Some weeks there may be alternate leaders.

Wed Sep 2   2/L/35 to 3/T/60   Deb's Diversions
35+ miles and smiles, hills and thrills, lunches and lattes. Meet at 10:00 a.m. (usually) for this ride. Helmets required. Rain cancels. For details join our email list at http://www.grizz.org/mailman/listinfo/wed_ride and check the list archives if you missed the current information. You can also contact Mark Sapiro, (415) 388-8910, <mark at msapiro dot net> if you can't get the information from the list.

Thu Sep 3   3/TM/60-80   Duros West
This weekly ride often tours through West Marin, but sometimes travels to Napa, Sonoma, or Livermore, depending on the season. We meet at 9:00 a.m. We have frequent regroups and usually stop for a real lunch, if it is available on the route. For this week's leader and route see http://tinyurl.com/GPCDurosWest. The ride is usually posted in the calendar by Monday evening. Weather cancellations will also be updated on the calendar. If you don't have web access you can call Mark Nienberg at (510) 812-9312 for the information.

Thu Sep 3   4/TM!/20-25   Thursday Evening Ride
Meet at North Berkeley BART at 5:20 p.m. for prompt 5:30 departure. A friendly and fast-paced TM ride with regroups. Up Spruce and out Grizzly Peak and Skyline, then down Shepherd Canyon and back to BART. Please bring lights. Ride repeats every Thursday till the end of the month. Sat Sep 5   LTMB/18.7   Individual Time Trial
Meet at the corner of San Pablo Dam Rd and Bear Creek Rd by 9:40 a.m. for a race against the clock. First rider is off at 10:01 and a rider a minute after that. Rain cancels. The ITT is the only GPC ride where you have to be a member of the Club (insurance reasons), but you can join or renew right there at the start for $15/year. Pre-registration is appreciated. Bill Schultz, (925) 876-4950 , or <schultzwill at yahoo dot com>.

Sat Sep 5   4/TM/57   Nicasio to Pierce Point Ranch
Head out through the endless rollers and some short but steep pitches in search of the Tule Elk at Pierce Point Ranch in the Pt Reyes National Seashore. Route will be Nicasio, Platform Bridge Road, Olema, Bear Valley, S.F.D. to Pierce Pt Rd. Return via Pt Reyes Station. Weather could be coastal fog (likely) or warm summer breezes (hopefully), so be prepared with appropriate layers. Bring lunch or $$ to buy at the deli in Inverness Park along the way (note: the deli can be slow, packing your lunch is generally the better option). There is no water out at the Ranch, so bring plenty and then re-stock in Inverness Park. Late ride stop in Pt Reyes Station on the return to hydrate, refuel and socialize at the Bovine Bakery. Leader rides at a fast TM pace, but slower riders comfortable following a cue sheet are welcome. Meet in Nicasio at 9:00 a.m., roll at 9:15. Leader: Stephanie Clarke (510) 558-9614.

Sat Sep 5   4/M/115   Berkeley to the Top of Calaveras Wall (bottom optional), BYOL
Enjoy quiet, scenic Calaveras Road and check on the state of the Calaveras dam heightening project on this long-distance but only moderately climbing out and back from Berkeley. Turnaround point is the top of the Calaveras wall. (Note: "Bottom optional" does not refer to your cycling outfit for this ride, but means you can drop down the Wall and come back up if so inclined). Traversing Redwood Road and going through Castro Valley both ways, we will mix it up a bit by going out via Dublin Canyon and Foothill Road and returning via Niles Canyon and Palomares Road. Water and quick snack stops at Willow Creek G.C. on Redwood Road and Sunol. Time allowing we will take the 3+ mile RT detour into Sunol Regional Wilderness where water may or may not be available, due to the drought. If yes, we will have lunch there; if no, we'll lunch in at the town park in Sunol, where there is also mostly snack food available at a mini-market. An alternative for those preferring less miles and a sit down lunch is to stop at the Sunol Cafe, then either go home on you own or meet us on our return from Calaveras Road. A prize will not be awarded to whoever spots any Golden Eagle(s); you should be watching the road, not the birds! Meet at Spruce St and Grizzly Peak Blvd at 8:00 a.m. for 8:10 departure. RSVP email to Mark H. appreciated for map count. Mark Homrighausen <homrighaus at aol dot com> (510) 528-9339; Co-leader Mark Abrahams <dma at abriz dot net>

Sun Sep 6   3/LT/24-or-44   Novice Ride #6 - Central Marin Redwoods
Tour the redwoods of central Marin county through Nicasio and have lunch at the Bovine Bakery on Highway 1. Return through Olema back to Nicasio and Lucas Valley. The 22-mile ride joins the 44-mile ride in Nicasio and loops back to Nicasio. There are hills, but we will ride them gently. Bring lunch or $ to buy. For the 44 mile ride, meet 10:00 a.m. across from the Miller Creek Community Center: exit Hwy 101 at the Lucas Valley exit just north of San Rafael and head West on Lucas Valley Road. Make a right turn at Miller Creek Rd. and park on the street across from the community center. For the 22 mile ride, meet at 11:00 a.m. in Nicasio for an 11:15 departure. From Hwy 101, take the Lucas Valley Rd/Smith Ranch Rd Exit. Go 10 miles west to Nicasio Valley Road. Turn right and go 0.3 mile to a parking area with convenience store. You will pass the 44-mile bicycle riders on Lucas Valley, so please take extra care. No drop. Helmets required. Rain cancels; if weather is dubious contact a ride leader. Brian Aldrich, <brianaldrich9 at gmail dot com>, (510) 693-0603; Janet Noble, Frank Castro, John Buenfil, Sherie Reineman, Janet Monks

Sun Sep 6   1/T/28   Easy social ride - Lunch at Blackhawk Plaza
Ride repeats on the first Sunday of every month. Meet at Pleasant Hill BART at 10:00 a.m. for a 10:20 a.m. departure. This is a good way to meet others in the club and for new riders to join in. Bring food or $ to buy and eat at the fabulous Draeger's Market or other great food spots in or around the plaza. All are welcome and anyone can join this ride. A TM group for Prestos route will be organized if enough riders are interested. All routes are pretty hilly. All riders are welcome, too...just save me a Bear Claw! Bring a friend. Meet 9:45 a.m. for 10:00 a.m. roll-out. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6065338 Optional lunch at Orinda Square (Petra's Greek Cafe, Nation's burgers, Subway, Peet's and Starbucks). Cordelia, and on to the scenic Gordon and Wooden Valleys in Solano County. The 120 mile version does two out-and-backs to the north ends of the two valleys, right up to the Napa County border; pack some provisions because we will take only short breaks in riding. Meanwhile the 100 mile version skips the out-and-backs and instead enjoys a (leaderless) sit-down lunch in the 60's retro-style Rockville cafe (breakfasts, burger & fries, etc.). We'll plan to rendezvous there and ride home together. If it's hot we can get cold drinks at the two Tower Markets in Cordelia and Rockville. And, of course, we'll pause briefly in Cordelia to learn about its colorful past! RSVP email to Mark H. appreciated for map count.
